Money magazine: Surprise #1 in the nation in job growth SURPRISE, Ariz. (July 17, 2006) Money magazine has listed the city of Surprise as the top city in America for job growth, with a 93.1% increase in jobs between 2000 and 2005.

“We’re delighted to be recognized nationally as a job creation engine as well as a community of big city amenities with a small town feel,” said Surprise Mayor Joan Shafer. “We’re building distinctive neighborhoods, educational excellence and a sense of community.”

The news comes just weeks after Surprise announced its population had nearly tripled between 2000 and 2005, from 30,000 to more than 88,000. Surprise officials expect the city will top 100,000 residents within the next several weeks.

“We’re very pleased, but not surprised,” said City Manager Jim Rumpeltes. “We will continue to work hard to build an even stronger jobs base with an emphasis on biotechnology.” The city’s Surprise Center is being hailed as an incubator for the biotech industry.

Surprise Center is emblematic of the community’s emergence as a premiere center of Southwestern living. Already home to the Heard Museum West, a highly acclaimed Aquatic Park, a new regional library and a town lake, Surprise Center features the under-construction Dream- catcher Park and Public Safety Building. The new Surprise City Hall will break ground there next spring. In addition to a biotech incubator, plans call for advanced medical facilities, retail and high density residential.

Surprise Center is adjacent to the Surprise Recreation Campus and Surprise Stadium, spring training home of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers. A new 3-field youth baseball complex will open this fall at the campus and a 25-court tennis complex will open next spring. Just west of the site, the new Valley Vista High School is set to welcome its first students in August.

News Releases - Growing population presents business opportunities

Growing population presents business opportunities

Surprise's population explosion means tremendous opportunity for business development, according to a study prepared by the Surprise Economic Development Department.

“We’ve tripled in size since the 2000 Census to more than 100,000 people today,” says Surprise Economic Development Director John Hagen. “Even though we lead the country in rate of job growth, the study demonstrates that hundreds of millions of dollars are there on the table awaiting the alert business owner or entrepreneur.”

The “Retail Gap Analysis” revealed eleven categories where demand outstrips supply, including specialty food stores, warehouse clubs and and full service restaurants. Up to $775 million in pent up demand is available annually, according to the study.

“Our online poll about the businesses people would like to see in Surprise mirrors that analysis,” Hagen says. “People would like to see warehouse clubs, specialty food stores and more restaurants. There are huge opportunities for these sectors in Surprise.”

A Sam’s Club planned for the Loop 303 and Bell Road will only begin to tap the market, Hagen says.

“We hope people will keep going to our polling site and tell us what retailers they would like to see that are not yet in the Arizona market. We will follow up,” Hagen adds.

Other areas with high opportunity levels are office supply stores, non-store retailers, sporting good and gas stations. Auto dealers also make the list, though Hagen says the development of the 303 Auto Show will fill that gap. The first of 11 dealers to build at the Auto Show, on the site of the Prasada regional mall development, is set to open in 2008.
