REFERENCE:Control board failures on Fire ovens.

TYPE OF ACTION REQUIRED: REACTIVE

APPLICATION:All Fire ovens that do not have an independent SSR installed.

PROBLEM:The heater utilizes relays located on the control board. If these relays fail, the entire control board must be replaced.

SOLUTION: Install the FRE-3013 SSR Field conversion kit to utilize a more robust and independent solid state relay. Refer to the schematics on page 3 (Figures 12 and 13) as required. FRE-3013 includes the following:• New control board for use with SSR - P/N: FRE-1206• SSR Contactor Wires, 27.5”, QTY 2 (one red and one white wire) - P/N: part of FRE-1200 • SSR Control Wires, 36” - P/N: part of FRE-1200• SSR with Heatsink - P/N: ENC-1788• Drill Template - P/N: FRE-1207• Blue Insulated Lugs, QTY 2 - P/N: 100826• Screw, #8 x 1/2 PHTRHD, CRES, QTY 2 - P/N: 101688

SSR FIELD CONVERSION PROCEDURE:1. If possible, access the oven’s parameters and note any custom cook settings.

2. Turn off the oven and allow it to cool.

CAUTION: The oven operates at temperatures up to 842°F (450°C) and may cause injury if not allowed to cool properly

3. Gain access to the oven’s wiring. a. Unplug the oven.

DANGER: Before replacing any oven component, ensure the oven is removed from any power source.

b. Remove the back panel (eight screws and the connectors for the two cooling fans). c. Tip the oven onto its right side (when looking at the front) and brace it so it will not roll. d. Remove the bottom panel (seven screws) by carefully pulling the bottom panel down to the work surface, while ensuring no wires become unplugged or damaged. e. Remove the screws from the display housing (two above the display) and remove it from the oven. f. Remove the top of the display housing to gain access to the control board (two screws).

4. Remove the old control board.

5. Install the SSR (ENC-1788). a. Place the drill template (FRE-1207) as shown in Figure 1 and, using a #12 drill bit (hole diameter 0.189 in.), drill the two holes as indicated on the template (Figure 2). b. Using the two screws (101688) included in this kit, attach the SSR as shown in Figure 3.

Page 2: Field Service Bulletin - turbochef.com · a. Locate the element wires from step 6.b and reterminate them using the 2 lugs (100826) included in this kit. b. Connect the white element

6. Following the instructions below, remove Connector #1 (8 terminals) from the display housing (Figure 4). a. Disconnect the display housing cooling fan wires from positions 8 and 7.

NOTE: The display housing cooling fan is not present on all ovens. Positions 8 and 7 may be empty.

b. Disconnect the element wires from positions 5 and 2. c. Re-route the element wires out of the display housing through the grommet (next to the contactor). These wires will be connected to the SSR in a later step. d. Locate the contactor (Figures 5 and 6) and remove the wires in terminals 2T1 and 6T3. Once removed, Connector #1 should be completely disconnected from the harness (Figure 6). Discard this connector.

7. Install the 36” SSR control harness (part of FRE-1200). a. Locate the 36” SSR control harness and route the four-pin connector through the display housing grommet.

NOTE: This harness has a new Connnector #1 that has been pre-wired in positions 5, 2, and 1.

b. Connect the four-pin connector to the SSR (Figure 8). Orient the 4-pin connector as shown in Figure 8. Pin 4 will be either black or white, pin 1 will be red. c. If the oven has a display housing cooling fan (Figure 5), connect the wires removed in step 6.a to the 36” SSR control wire harness now (Figure 9). i. Connect the red wire from Connector #2 to position 8 on the new Connector #1. ii. Connect the gray wire from the cooling fan to position 7 on the new Connector #1.

9. Connect the element wires to the SSR. a. Locate the element wires from step 6.b and reterminate them using the 2 lugs (100826) included in this kit. b. Connect the white element wire to SSR terminal A2 (bottom-right as oriented in Figures 10 and 11). c. Connect the red element wire to SSR terminal B2 (top-left as oriented in Figure 10 and 11).

10. Connect the new control board (FRE-1206) included in this kit.

11. Re-assemble the oven.

CAUTION: When re-installing the back panel, ensure that you reconnect the cooling fans and route the high limit wire away from any electrical connections.

12. Confirm the new control board’s parameters are set correctly (see DOC-1485) and reprogram any custom cook settings.
