& UPMC Center for Engagement and Inclusion On September 20th, BBF celebrated its 60th Anniversary at a gala that took place in the UPMC Club, Heinz Field. It was a lovely evening with over 400 guests in attendance, all were moved to see how many old friends and passionate supporters came to share in the incredible story of the work of BBF that began in 1958. Special thanks for the evening go to the gala co-chairs, Susan and Roy Dorrance and Caroline and Tom Wentling, who provided guidance and backing that led to a simply wonderful event. Throughout the night, speakers guided the audience through BBF’s impactful history, its recent efforts focusing on disaster response, and plans for the next 60 years. There were emotional accounts of the recent on-going response in Puerto Rico and BBF President Luke Hingson’s very personal relationship with the work of the Foundation. While the pictures can’t quite do the event justice, we’d like to share a few highlights with you. This summer, BBF’s Education Program sent three ocean-going containers of new textbooks and educational materials to overseas partner organizations from BBF’s Pittsburgh warehouse. Two shipments of almost 20,000 books were sent to the Makati

Rotary Club in the Philippines, where they will be distributed to a network of schools. An additional shipment of over 12,000 books was sent to Guyana with BBF’s long-time partner, Food for the Poor.

BBF is grateful to the publishers and individuals who help us support education and literacy efforts in countries around the globe through their generous gift-in-kind donations.

BBF’s response to Hurricane Florence has progressed quickly. At the start, BBF quickly funded two Gleaning for the World shipments of general disaster relief items. Shortly thereafter, BBF supported an additional Gleaning for the World shipment of water and, as we go to press, BBF is arranging a food bank transfer with Feeding America. In Puerto Rico, BBF is funding three solar projects, all throughthePonceMedicalSchoolFoundation.Thefirstoftheseinstallations was completed in the town of Jayuya last month. Jayuya is a town of 16,000 located in the mountainous, eastern part of the island. The clinic there is the only medical center within

an hour’s drive, and the addition of a solar backup system will be of critical importance in helping ensure that all residents in the area are able to receive care. The exact location of the next two solar panel systems on the additional selected clinicsa is yet to be determined, but their installation is expected to be completed soon.

A medical mission team from Love of Christ Presbyterian Church in Bayside, New York, recently traveled to Rio Azul and Purral, Costa Rica. BBF supported this effort with a donation of eight pounds of basic medical supplies and 57 bottles of medication for use in this trip that helped the team provide medical and vision care to 360 people and dental care to 240 at Hospital del Alma. The remaining supplies were left with a partnering missionary that is in the process of establishing a sustainable clinic. Many of those served received care from the team because they had

no medical insurance, principally due to a lack of legal documentation as they were immigrating from Nicaragua. The team sent so many fantastic pictures that we had to share more of them than usual. It’s great to see so much passion helping others in need.

BBF-Supported Medical Mission Trips

In the first eight months of 2018, BBF provided medical supplies and pharmaceuticals to 298 medical mission trips to 55 countries.

Mission Partners for Christ in Cameroon and Chad Thanks to Illinois-based medical mission team, Mission Partners for Christ, over a thousand people in Daba, Chad and Guidiguis, Cameroon recently received medical, dental and vision care. The team, which BBF has worked with in the past and to which it was happy to provide medical supplies for this most recent trip, treated as many people as possible before leaving the remaining supplies to a local physician to continue this good work.

Love of Christ Presbyterian Churchin Costa Rica

Bethany Romanian Baptist Church in Romania A California-based medical mission team from Bethany Romanian Baptist Church recently returned from a trip to Romania. BBF supported this trip with a donation of medical supplies and specialized care kits that the team used to provide medical care to 245 patients at the Orasul Nou and Nazarcea clinics. In particular, the team noted the incidental usefulness of a laceration kit that had been included

in the numerous supplies. A group of children were playing soccer while barefoot nearby and one of them ended upwith a significant cut that the teamwasable to treatimmediately. A much happier end to what could have been a dangerous situation. We’re glad the team was there too!

Same Mission, Changing Circumstances 1990-2000

While Brother’s Brother Foundation’s mission has not changed, its activities have adapted to evolving circumstances—social needs, philanthropic opportunities and solving some of the world’s most pressing problems. With the dramatic decline of targeted infectious diseases, BBF continued and expanded its agricultural program. It provided seeds: 7,742 tons of them—enough to sow the entire state of Maryland—to impoverished agricultural communities around the world. From 1990 to 2000, BBF was the largest private charitable distributor of donated seeds to temperate climates. But as the temperate climates that it largely served became self-sufficient and theseed production industry consolidated, the agricultural program went into decline. The Foundation also began sending donated books abroadbeginningwithitsfirstshipment to Liberia in 1961—a donation transported by the US government at the behest of President Kennedy. Since that time, BBF has shipped 101 million requested books to more than 25 million students in 112 countries, becoming the largest non-governmental book distributor in the world. This assistance has helped many governments develop their national education programs. Because of this expanding infrastructure and the decline in textbook inventories (especially as publishers moved more toward e-books and print-on-demand titles), the need and availability of books has declined. As immunological, educational and (at least in temperate zones) agricultural needs in the world became less acute, BBF began to focus on long-term health care. This included the development of partnerships with a variety of pharmaceutical manufacturers and vendors. Consequently, in the past 15 years the Foundation went from distributing 300,000 bottles of medicine per year to almost ten times that amount—an average of 2.7 million bottles annually, shipped to physicians, clinics, small hospitals and other healthcare facilities in 46 countries around the world.

BBF long ago adopted the motto, “Connecting People’s Resources with People’s Needs,” as an aspiration flexible enoughto adapt to the world’s ever-changing needs, and its Board, staff and supporters continue to make good on that pledge.
