It was Christmas time in the Land of DarkDreams where the fairies, witches, andcreatures who lived there rarely smiled. But that was ok. It was just in their nature.
Their inability to smile very muchdefinitely did not stop them fromcelebrating Christmas!
Everyone seemed to be in the Christmasspirit except for one little magical witch. Her name was Fidget.
When Fidget’s mother realized how sadFidget was, she magically created an elfoutfit for her to wear as Fidget sat undertheir decorated Christmas tree.“I don’t want to be an elf, mother. I wantto be a mermaid! A real one!” Said Fidget.
Fidget’s mother shrugged. She was sad thather little girl wanted to be something shewas not.
“I can’t turn you into a mermaid, Fidget!”Said her mother. “If you became amermaid, you would have to move awayand live in the ocean!”
Fidget shrugged and stared at her mother.“I’m going to bed now,” Fidget said sadlyand off she went.
Fidget was frustrated. She had such a talentfor casting spells.
She could change the color of her hair andeyes, or cast a spell to create a gift forsomeone else, but there was one spell thatshe couldn’t master and that was to turnherself into a mermaid!
When fidget fell fast asleep, she had a dream that she was a mermaid at last! She swamwith the dolphins and played with the starfish. She even ate a seaweed salad! But,before she knew it, it was morning and she knew she would have to get up soon.
That morning, Fidget came up with a plan. She visited her friend Celeste, who was afairy sorcerer. Celeste had the best luckwith making wishes come true, so shewished on the stars on Fidget’s behalf.
“Thank you, Celeste! Said Fidget! “Whendo you think I will become a mermaid?!”
Celeste smiled at Fidget. “I don’t knowexactly what day, but it will be sometimebefore Christmas.” Said Celeste.
Fidget decided to go on a sleigh ride after she left Celeste. She tried to enjoy her lastsleigh ride in the snow before she began her new life as a real live mermaid.
Later that day, Fidget’s friend stitch calledher and invited her over. He had aChristmas gift for her. Stitch had madeFidget a beautiful heart with butterflywings.
“Oh thank you, Stitch, but I can’t come over.I’m waiting for myChristmas wish to cometrue and I can’t leave myhouse.”
Stitch scratched his headand hung up the phone.
He walked outside andsat sadly under a tree. Atear fell from his eye.
The next night, Fidget received anothercall. This time it was her friend Stripe.
“Hi, Fidget! I have a Christmas gift foryou!” He said. Stripe was excited and soproud of himself for making a batch ofskull candy for Fidget. He couldn’t wait togive it to her!
“Umm, can I call you back, Stripe? I’mreally busy. I need to prepare myself forwhen I become a mermaid. My Christmaswish may come true at any moment and Ineed to finish this Mermaid book I’mreading!” Said Fidget.
“Huh? Ok.” Said Stripe who was utterlyconfused. “Bye Stripe.” Said Fidget. Shequickly hung up the phone.
The next evening, while Fidget was readinganother book about mermaids, thedoorbell rang and her mother answered it.It was another one of Fidget’s friends.
“Fidget! Her mother yelled. “Calista ishere with a Christmas gift for you!” Calistahad hand stitched a pink heart thatrepresented her apology to Fidget forhaving fought with her.
“Tell her I can’t come to the door just now.I’m busy preparing for my Christmaswish!”
Fidget ‘s mother sighed.“I’m sorry, Calista. Maybe try againtomorrow.” Calista nodded sadly andwalked away.
The next morning, Fidget’s friend Cosmostook a trip to the Land of Cupcakes andcreated a Christmas cupcake just forFidget. When he called Fidget and askedher what time he could bring over thecupcake he had made for her, he was deeplydisappointed.
“Well, I don’t think I will even be here toeat it, Cosmos. I’m sorry but I’m going tobe a mermaid soon, and I’ll be living in thesea.” Said Fidget.
“You’re leaving us?” Said Cosmos sadly. He couldn’t imagine Fidget not beingaround anymore. What has gotten intoher? Cosmos thought.“Oh, Cosmos…You can always come visitme by the sea side.” Said Fidget.
The next evening, Fidget’s friend Fireknocked on Fidget’s door. She had handsewn a beautiful heart shaped pillow all byherself.
“Thank you, Fire! But, I’m afraid it willjust get soaked and ruined in the ocean!”Said Fidget.
Fire, scratched her head and stared atFidget in confusion. “In the ocean?” Sheasked.
“Haven’t you heard? I’m going to become amermaid soon and I can’t really takeanything with me. I’m sorry, Fire. But I’lltalk to you soon! Said Fidget as she quicklyshut the door.
It was almost Christmas day when Fidgetreceived an invitation to her friend’s,Christmas party.
On the night of the party, Fidget felt sofrustrated that she hadn’t turned into amermaid yet, she sat on the couch angrilyand pouted. She was so angry she decidednot to even go to the party.
The next morning,Fidget’s friend’s sistersent Fidget of picture ofher sister who was so sadat her own party becauseFidget never even showedup.
When Fidget saw thepicture, a sudden cloudof sadness overwhelmedher. She realized that shehad become sodetermined to changeinto a mermaid that shewas hurting her friendsthe whole time.
Fidget instantly thought of poor Stitch andhow he must have felt when she rejected hisgift he had worked so hard on.
And she thought about Cosmos and hiscupcake he had made her.
She felt so horrible about the way she hadtreated him, she instantly delivered 10sugar skulls to Cosmos house to add to hissugar skull collection and gave him a crownas well.
Fidget also felt awful for her best friend,Fire, who had made Fidget the handstitched heart pillow, she decided to go toFire’s house and sing Christmas carols ather door to make up for her hurtfulbehavior.
Fidget finally realized how much her friends loved her just the way she was and shedidn’t need to change into a mermaid. She asked Celeste to stop the spell. All shewanted now more than ever was to be a good friend, and that is just what she did!
