Tourism and globalization a) Space-time compression, neo-liberalization and tourism; b) Dynamics of the global tourism demand and international tourist flows; b) Capital concentration and transnational corporations; c) New technologies, de-regulation, transports and tourism; d) Information revolution, CIT and tourism. 2. World tourism destionations in focus a) Southern Europe; b) China and Southeast Asia; b) Middle East and North Africa 3. Global-local tensions in tourist places a) Turistification and gentrification in the cities of North Global; b) Heritage tourism and ‘industry of nostalgy’: dissonance and conflits in places of memory; c) Tourism and post- colonialism: the commodification of the Other. Objectives and skills This CU aims to discuss the relationship between tourism and globalization, providing information to students about the spatial organization of world tourism and developing a critical view on the tourism impacts on destination’ societies, cultures and places. The teaching methods are designed to stimulate the reflexivity and critical thinking, theory building based in case studies, and acquaintance with specialized scientific literature. To achieve these outcomes, participatory learning methods are central. Classes will work as reading and discussion fora, under the lecturer supervision.
