Prepare a comprehensive list of Environmental

impacts for EIA of Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment

    Plant.

The project Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant is located eastern part of Dhaka city, five

kilometer to the east from Rampura Bridge, planned to be constructed on the east side of

the Aftabnagar Residential Area and is designed to treat sewage collected from the

Hatirjheel and the adjoined area and then discharge the treated effluent to the Gajaria khal

which then flows to the Balu river, which is the main objective of the implementation of the

plant i.e. to save the Balu river from dying down from excessive pollution. This STP capacity

may be 500000 m3/day to treatment the upcoming sewage. Major environmental impacts

that could be generated from implementing this Plant can be categorized as follows.

    Biological Impacts

    1. Excess Minerals: Excessive minerals like high concentration of N causes nitrogen injury,

excessive vegetative growth, delayed growth season and maturity, causing economic loss of

farmers. Excessive of N and P cause excessive growth of undesirable aquatic life (eutropication).

Nitrogen leaching causes ground water pollution with adverse health and environmental impacts.

    2. Wild life and wild life habitat:Collection and treatment the sewerage that is presently

randomly discharged to open waters and wetlands, the contamination of these water bodies willdecrease, thereby improving the living conditions for fish. Animals and birds feeding on fish will

increase in number. Rich nutrients from the treated water will induce enhanced vegetation

growth which will have a positive impact on the local animal lives.

    3. Food chain: Composition of sewage water are organic matter ,inorganic matter (dissolved

minerals) like nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium), toxic chemicals (heavy metal and

    5. Hazardous Materials: Underground storage tanks, site contamination, storage of hazardous

substances could result in negative impacts on the local ecosystem.

    Socio-economic Impacts

1.Impact on land:The land price of Dhaka city is so high and day by day ascend so many

multiple that the land looser never gain such amount of land by the compensation.

    2. Re-settlement:The implementation of the STP will cause the local inhabitants to move out

    site from the projected area.

    3. Local transport:Since it is a development of a new infrastructure, local roads will be

provided for accessing the STP which will improve the local transport.

    4. Irrigation:Wastewater and its nutrient content can be used extensively for irrigation which

can deliver positive benefits to the farming community. The discharge from the effluent and the

disposed sludge will contain essential plants food nutrients like N, P, S etc. which will encourage

    abundant growth of most crops give higher than potential yields with wastewater irrigation;

reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, resulting in net cost savings to farmers.

    5. Public and workers Health:

The Project is considered to have a high positive impactreducing the contamination levels in open water areas and wetlands as well as groundwater,

reducing the incidence of water related diseases, especially among the poor and very poor having

no access to safe water supply. By reducing the incidence of water related diseases the general

health condition among poor and very poor is anticiated to improve, thereby improving their

income opportunities by reducing sickness and cost for medical treatment

6.Migration:The forces driving migration into Dhaka are manyfold, complicated and highly

intertwined. Improving livelihood for the poor and very poor providing improve sanitation, health etc. may add to the driving forces of migration.

    7. Income and poverty:During the construction works the Project will generate income

generation opportunities for local workers. But professions of local inhabitants like fishing and

    agriculture would be affected adversely.

    8. Education:In the most obvious way, educational levels influence economic status, as higher

paying jobs tend to require advanced or specialized education. Education, however, also

determines social status and allows people to trust those who are educated in their fields of

employment. The Projected people due to mobilization breakdown educational study and lost the

    future opportunity.

9.Health:The excessive odor will Health hazardous for the rest local people through the airpollution causes different kinds of dieses

10.Local Cultural and Interaction Issues:The integration of different local cultures andinteraction held among theses local people which will breakdown in that locality through the

    mobilization.

    11. Mosquito breeding and disease transmission: Mosquito larvae generally live in small, shallow water bodies where disturbance of surface water is uncommon to spread out diseaseslike malaria.

    Physico-chemical Impacts

    Surface water quality

    1.Drinking water quality:

The expected reduction in discharge of untreated sewage to theBalu and Sitalakhy river will improve the quality of the water abstracted from the Sitalakhya

River by the major Saidabad Water Treatment plant, the primary supplier of drinking water to

Dhaka. Improving the water quality for the supply of Saidabad Water treatment plant is

    considered a major positive benefit.

    2. Replenishment of DO of water: The biodegradable organic compounds in the sewer

water exist could increase the water quality parameters like BOD and COD which would

eventually lead to depletion of D.O. in surface water endangering the aquatic life.

3.Water pollution: The Project is considered to have a high positive impact reducing the water

pollution levels in open water areas and wetlands, including especially the Balu and Sitalakhya

rivers bordering the eastern part of Dhaka during operation and treatment the sewage .

4.Open water areas and wetlands:The treated effluents from the Dasherkandi STP will be

discharged into the Gajaria Khal and eventually to the Balu river. The water quality in the Balu

river is already heavily impacted by the uncontrolled discharge of sewerage from urban and the

Tejgaon industrial area. The STP will collect and treat a substantial part of the present, polluted

water and save to a great extent the open water areas and surrounding wetlands.

    5. Aesthetic quality:The treated water would be more aesthetic and clear as the amount of

    floating material would be reduced.

    Ground water quality

    1. Ground water Storage: The untreated sewage polluted our ground water while the treatedwater will recharge and enhance our ground water storage in Dhaka city.

    2. Soil Fertility: High content of nutrients from the treated water will increase in soil fertilityand thereby produce lush vegetation growth.

    3.

    Air quality:

During construction, any required earth movement; excavation etc. may causedust, noise and air pollution. Impacts during the storage and transport of construction

materials will be minimized by covering the material or keeping the material wet.

    4. Odor and nuisance problem: Odor, nuisanceand the foul stench emanating from theSTP would be excessive problem to the inhabitants of the adjacent residential area.

    5. Sludge Disposal and Waste Management: Disposal of all wastes generated during

construction work should be organized in an environmentally acceptable manner. This shall include

consideration of proper treatment, and the nature and location of disposal sites.

    6. Noise quality: During the construction period huge noise create should be reduce.

Operating of heavy vehicles and machines will cause some noise pollution.

    7. Erosion and siltation: Erosion from the work sites and siltation from run-offs may occur

especially during rain. To mitigate this, proper drainage facilities and protection of erosion prone

work areas and materials should be planned for.

8.Improvement Drainage basin: Collecting,Treatment and Conveying sewage is improved

discharge basin and reduse setllelable and suspended solid and enhance the carying capacity ofthese basin.

9.Flooding:There is no foreseen on flooding from the implementation of the STP. However, if

flow through water channel is not properly regulated, the operation of the STP may cause

    temporary inundation or floods.
