Fiber Friends ShawlBy Cori Eichelberger (Irocknits Designs)

Dedicated to my dear friend, Mary Brown

I designed this easy-knitting, crescent-shaped shawl with a bit of sampler look for the Carolina Fiber Fest. A checklist pattern with nine sections using DK weight yarn, it works up quickly with each new section offering you a sampling of stitches. This shawl is an ode to my dear sweet friend, Mary Brown, and to fiber friends everywhere.

SIZE: One size.

FINISHED SIZE: 20” deep X 72” tip-to-tip, blocked. (51 cm X 183 cm).

YARN: DK weight: (approximately 250 yds per 115 g) 100% merino.

Sample was knit using 500 yards of Suburban Stitcher Merino DK (100% merino wool; 250 yards/229 m per 115 g/4 oz) in colorway: Faded Lavender.

GAUGE: DK: 18 sts and 22 rows per 4”/10 cm (4.5 sts and 5.5 rows per 1”/2.5 cm) in Stockinette Stitch.

NOTE: Even though this is a shawl and fit doesn’t have to be precise, be sure and achieve gauge. Failure to do so may change yarn requirements. If in doubt, use a smaller needle.

NEEDLE: US 8 (5.0 mm) 32-inch OR 40-inch (102 cm) circular needle.

NOTIONS: Stitch markers, tapestry needle.

“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow (wo)men.”

TERMS & TECHNIQUES: CO = Cast on. K = Knit. K1, P1 into a stitch = Insert your working needle into the next stitch and knit one stitch but leave it on the main needle. Bring the working yarn to the front and purl into the same stitch, this time pulling it off the main needle.KFB = Knit the stitch as usual, but don’t drop it off the left-hand needle. Knit the stitch again through the back loop, and then drop it off the needle.K2tog = Knit 2 stitches together.P = Purl.PM = Place Marker.R(W)S = Right (Wrong) Side.SL = Slip purlwise. Sl1wyif = Slip one stitch with the yarn in front.SSK = Slip the next 2 stitches, one at a time as if to knit, to the right needle. Insert the left needle into the fronts of these two stitches and knit them together.St(s) = Stitch(es).RT = Twisted Knit Stitch = Knit 2 together, then knit into the first stitch of the pair once more before dropping both stitches off the needle.TBL = Through the back loop of the stitch.
