The Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC)

is the central scientific, research, and engineering

information support activity for the Department

of Defense (DoD).

DTIC facilitates performance of responsibilities of

the Under Secretary for Research and Engineering

in accordance with DoDD 5134.3; and executes

the programs and functions of the DoD Scientific

and Technical Information Program (STIP), as

specified in DoDI 3200.12 and DoD Manual

(DoDM) 3200.14.

Access to the R&E G ateway

DTIC’s R&E Gateway (controlled unclassified) is limited

to eligible users, who include DoD employees, DoD

contractors, federal government employees, and

federal government contractors. Accessing DTIC’s sites

is easy. Users with a Common Access Card (CAC),

Personal Identity Verification Card (PIV), or External

Certificate Authority (ECA) can log in for immediate

access.

Common Access Card (CAC) smartcard -

issued to active duty service members, DoD civilian

employees and DoD contractors who are under

DoD contract and are sponsored by a DoD Service

or agency.

Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card -

issued to qualified employees and contractors of

US federal agencies. The issuance process for PIV

card varies from agency to agency. More informa-

tion can be found at piv.idmanagement.gov.

External Certificate Authority (ECA) certificate -

issued by commercial organizations doing business

with the DoD or US federal agencies to industry

personnel who do not qualify for either a CAC or a

PIV. Learn more at: identrust.com/certificates/-

For more than 74 years, DTIC has served the information

needs of the defense community through the collection

and preservation of DoD’s multi-billion dollar investment

in science and technology. This collection now exceeds

4.5 million documents–technical research, financial,

international agreement, and programmatic science and

technology–that are available to DoD Labs, academia,

federally funded research and development centers, and

industry partners.

DTIC’s flagship knowledge management hub–the R&E

Gateway–provides easy access to public, controlled

unclassified, and classified information records, making

them available to eligible users. DTIC also administers the

Information Analysis Center (IAC) program for the

Department. The IACs provide research and analysis

support to DoD through flexible, scalable contract vehicles

that offer access to a network of industry and academic

scientists and engineers.

Connecting People

Access DoD’s controlled unclassified science and technology

activities, from initial investments through the final research

reports. Identify the maturity of technology, where work is

being done, funding by research category, subject matter

experts, and international agreements with partners.

Search S&T reports, peer-reviewed scholarly articles

generated from DoD research, DoD grant awards, DoD

investment budget data, and conference proceedings.

Preserving Knowledge

Review DoD’s classified science and technology activities,

from research progress reports through the final research

reports. Discover where work is being done in the

Services and who the subject matter experts are.
