As the spring months arrive (finally!) and our weather begins to moderate, it is usually the case that with the change of weather, there is an accom‐panying change of mood and tempo. Warmer weather tends to bring with it intui ons of summer, and a slower pace of living.
Not so in our synagogue! In fact, if anything, the opening weeks of May are filled with programs that will
teach, remember, and celebrate.
Our annual observance of Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, will take place on Wednesday evening, May 4, at 7:30PM in the Rabbi Ben Zion Bokser Sanctuary. This program, such an important part of our synagogue calendar, will feature a Ma’ariv service framed by the ligh ng of memorial candles by survivors and children of survivors and some of our younger members, performances by Nagilah, the choral group of FHJC, as well as our Hebrew High School students, and a presenta on by past FHJC President Mark Raphael on his parents’ Holocaust experi‐ence in Salonika, Greece, and the experience of Greek Jews as a whole during those terrible years.
Following quickly on the heels of our Yom Hashoah program will come the weekend of May 6‐7, when we will be privileged to welcome to the Forest Hills Jewish Center Dr. Benjamin D. Som‐mer, one of JTS’ outstanding young Bible scholars. Dr. Sommer will, in a variety of ways, explore the issue of cri cal study of
sacred Torah text, and its impact on faith and prac ce. There is no single topic more important to a thinking, observant Con‐serva ve Jew than learning how to integrate passion and reason in the prac ce of Judaism, and no scholar more able to address this issue than Dr. Sommer. Addi onally, Dr. Sommer has ex‐pressed an interest in mee ng with any high school sophomores and juniors who might be interested in thinking about the Joint Program linking JTS’ List College with the School of General Studies at Columbia University. That mee ng will take place right a er the a ernoon presenta on on Shabbat.
We look forward to welcoming Dr. Sommer to our synagogue! This program is once again made possible by the generosity of the Sevin family, in loving memory of Malvin Peace Sevin, z”l.
And then… less than a week later, on Wednesday, May 11, we will once again celebrate Israel’s Independence Day—Yom Ha’atzma’ut—with our annual Zimriyah, sponsored by the Avi‐dor family in loving memory of Arie, z”l. With wonderful Israeli music and delicious Middle Eastern treats, we will wish Israel a happy 68th birthday!
And all of this is just in the first two weeks of May!!
I look forward to sharing all of these wonderful and important occasions with you.

CELEBRATION CONCERT in Memory of Our Beloved Cantor
ERNO GROSZ, z"l
The magnificent voice of Cantor Erno Grosz, z"l filled our sanctuary with the music of prayer for thirty‐six years, li ing the hearts and spirits of the congrega on on Shabbat and holidays.
When he wasn't davening on the bimah, Cantor Grosz mentored genera ons of b'nei mitzvah. All members of the Center family were beneficiaries of his warm and caring presence in mes of joy and sorrow knowing they had the touch of a personal friend.
What be er way to honor the man and his memory than with an a ernoon of music.
Event Chairs, Jerry and Barbara Klibanoff

Notes from the Hazzan When I became the Hazzan of Con‐grega on Oheb Sholom in South Or‐ange, NJ, I succeeded Cantor Edgar Mills who had served that congrega‐on for 35 years. Because our voices
and personali es were very different, I thought the change would be an easy one, but to the long me mem‐bers of that shul, even a er 9 years there, I was s ll the "new cantor." When I arrived in Highland Park, Illi‐nois, there had already been two can‐
tors who served there following the un mely death of Cantor Jordan Cohen, a much beloved Cantor who died tragically at the age of 42. One was Cantor Reuven Frankel, who served there for many years and eventually le the shul to become the Rabbi of a nearby congrega on. He, too, was a favorite of many, and the old mers talked about him and Jordan all the me. Although I served that shul for 11 years, to many I was s ll the new cantor.
When I was chosen to become the new Cantor of the Forest Hills Jewish Center, I knew even before arriving here that although Cantor Adam Frei had davened here beau fully for 10 years, the music and cantorial life of this synagogue were synonymous with Cantor Erno Grosz. Thankfully, Erno was quite gracious about a
new person occupying his pulpit, which made my arrival a smooth one. I believed that once again, differences in our voices and personali es would make for an easy transi on and this me I was right. His sound and presence are s ll felt in our sanc‐
tuary, but he helped make room for another cantor to bring something new to the spiritual life of our congrega on, and for that I'm especially grateful.
Erno's passing this past fall was a great loss for so many, espe‐cially his wife Anna, their children Michelle, Diane and Ken, and the beloved grandchildren. To mark the Yahrtzeit, the leadership of the congrega on has asked me and our concert commi ee to prepare a concert to honor the memory of Cantor Erno Grosz, z’’l. Therefore, on Sunday a ernoon, October 30, our sanctuary will be filled with the sound of magnificent music presented by Cantors Sol Zim, Jacob Ben‐Zion Mendelson, Fredda Rakusin Mendelson, and Shayna Smith Postman, who will join me and a number of instrumentalists in a fabulous concert with music for everyone. I urge you to put the date on your calendars now and plan to a end what will be a fantas c tribute to a special man.
With best wishes for a Hag Kasher v'Sameah,

Once again our publica on dead‐line makes me feel like I’m in a me warp. By the me you read
this, Pesach will be receding in the rear‐view mirror.
But as I write this, I watch a whirlwind of ac vity around me as everyone prepares for Pesach. Having finished all the usual annual tradi ons, including the “best mat‐zoh ball” argument, I’m on to the many exci ng things that have happened in the last two months.
Let’s start with the Journal Dinner Dance. The turnout was one of the largest in re‐cent memory. We had a list of honorees, which with their children, represented three genera ons of par cipa on in the Forest Hills Jewish Center. L’dor v’dor v’dor.
And then in line with the theme of l’dor v’dor we rolled out the Planned Giving pro‐
gram. As I said in May 2015, “We need to start planning a future in which our Jewish lives can be more than a struggle from one financial crisis to the next.” The Planned Giving program does just that. The mailing went out a few weeks ago and the com‐mi ee is gearing up for mee ngs with the membership.
And then of course there are the usual suspects.
Youth Shabbat was a rousing success with par cipa on of our children of all ages. (I am somewhat hesitant to call them chil‐dren since some of them are taller than me!) Men’s Club Shabbat was another success with significant lay par cipa on in the service followed by a rousing party in the evening. And of course the Megillah reading and the Purim carnival. The Purim carnival seems to get be er each year. If you have never a ended one you are miss‐ing something.
These events require a tremendous amount of planning and their success is a
tribute to our membership and our profes‐sional staff.
And last but far from least was the Annual Federa on of Jewish Men’s Clubs Journal Gala. Our own Lenny Picker was our Man of the Year and Nathaniel Korb was Youth of the Year. Mazel Tov and Yasher Koach to the two of them.
Then there are the changes.
The week before Pesach, Shabbat HaGadol, for the first me in over sixty years, we davened without the Bokser siddur. The new siddur, Lev Shalem, is a product of the Rabbinical Assembly. At first there was some trepida on and some confusion, but in the end it was obvious that the changes were for the good. Sixty years is a long me, and the organiza on and content of
Lev Shalem is more geared to the needs of our congrega on in 2016.
And almost in parallel, we are mailing the “final dra ” of the revised Center cons tu‐

It’s been a great me for United Parents!
Youth Shabbat was held on March 12, 2016. It was a dynamic morning, and our Sanctuary was filled with an enormous amount of ener‐gy. It was wonderful to see so many of the children of FHJC, from the nursery school through high school, par cipate in Youth Shabbat. It was thrilling to see the never‐ending line of nursery school children march
into the Sanctuary for a Torah Parade. A er services, approximate‐ly 180 people a ended a luncheon to honor all the children for their amazing job on Youth Shabbat. The morning would not have happened without the help of the Rabbi, the Hazzan, Lynn Lancas‐ter, Susan Rosenbaum, Debbie Gregor, Alyssa Pollack, Randi Zwick‐Marks, Mollie Mandel, Jeanine Mashihi, Laurie Worthman and Ali‐son Ederer.
On the heels of Youth Shabbat, FHJC celebrated Purim! The Nurse‐ry School held their Purim breakfast on Sunday morning, March 20. Magician Evan entertained the children, who all enjoyed ge ng dressed in their costumes! Thanks to Susan Rosenbaum, Trudy Turk, Rachel Leibovich and Alyssa Pollack for all their work on this event. Later in the day, everyone had a blast at the annual Purim carnival! This year’s carnival featured some new booths and drew tons of people! It certainly put everyone into the Purim spirit. Thank you to Karen Stein and Adam Monaco for all of their me and effort in pu ng the carnival together and of course, all the teens and adult volunteers who worked so hard at the carnival.
Thank you to everyone who par cipated in our Miss Chocolate Pe‐sach candy fundraiser. You were able to obtain some sweet treats for the upcoming Pesach holiday while at the same me support United Parents! Stephanie Koerner‐Wood, Alyssa Pollack and Richard Chase

THE FOREST HILLS JEWISH CENTER PAGE 5 MAY– JUNE 2016
This year, with Pe‐sach coming so close to May, I am think‐ing of the four chil‐dren of the Ha‐gadah, and assessing where we have suc‐ceeded and where we have been chal‐lenged and need to
work harder next year.
The Hagadah tells us of four children, the wise child, the rebellious child, the simple child, and the child who does not know how to ask. In truth, almost all of us are a compila on of all four, but our tradi on challenges us to meet each of these chil‐dren where they are and to listen to them and answer them in ways that go beyond the obvious. I believe that this is true for all of educa on but especially true for Jewish educa on.
So many of our children are wise, but this year I think specifically of a number of students who came to us from Solomon Schechter. The transi on is a difficult one in many ways. There is no doubt that their knowledge base exceeds that of many of their Religious School classmates and yet there is a part of our curriculum which is not taught at Schechter. We worked hard this year to provide them with a Hebrew level that is appropriate for them and hon‐ors what they have already learned. We have also worked to integrate them into classes and ac vi es that feel new and some mes uncomfortable. At the end of the year I am pleased at how far we have come and hope to con nue mee ng these students where they are and helping them
to con nue their Jewish educa on.
Jewish lore has it that it is a rite of passage for Jewish children to rebel against Reli‐gious School. We have found that to be less and less the case. As our learning be‐comes more compelling and our commu‐nity more relevant, our students are hap‐pier and happier to learn with us. Our High School students, a period where rebel‐liousness is expected and healthy, are spending more me learning, playing, praying and even teaching in our building. Perhaps it is because all of their teachers are willing and able to help them explore their feelings and experiences including the rebellious ones. Our teens know that FHJC is a place where it is safe to expose all of who you are, rebellion and all. This is an area where I see great success. Our teens are in the building because they want to be here not because they have to be here.
We are all simple and complex. I have however come to believe that it is im‐portant to recognize that simple is an im‐portant jumping off point. At the begin‐ning of each year I urge our teachers to view each one of our children as a simple child. There is me to look at the challeng‐es, stories, family dynamics and the myri‐ad of complexi es that each of us car‐ries. Yet to start, who is the simple child
who sits before you and how can we an‐swer his or her most basic ques ons? Do I ma er? How do I fit in? What does Juda‐ism mean to me? There is always me to move on from there and yet we need to respect that each of us, at our core, is a simple child.
How does one meet the child who does not know how to ask? We are constantly challenged to be inclusive on a variety of levels. This year one of our children had a speech disability and truly, in the most basic terms, did not have the words to ask. He did however have a laugh that would knock your socks off and a smile that pulled you into his world in a way that was a true gi . He couldn’t ask un l we became be er listeners and then we had so much to learn from each other. We succeeded in opening our doors and find‐ing our school to be richer for it.
So wise, rebellious, simple and unable to ask, I am proud of where we met each of these. It has been an outstanding school year. Thank you to our parents, students and teachers. Thank you to our lay leaders and professional staff who support us. Thank you to our clergy who not only teach our students but inspire them.
I have no doubt that next year will be even be er.

News from Nursery School Susan Rosenbaum
Outdoor ac vi es can help build happy memories. Now that the weather is ge ng be er it is a great me for the whole fami‐ly to play together. The family that plays together in an exercise kind of way defi‐nitely stays fit together. One good way to make family fitness a workable idea is to grab li le moments and make them into an
ac vity. All you need are a few good ideas to get you moving.
Have a dog? What be er way to mul task than to take the dog for a walk and bring the children along. If you don’t have one, maybe you can walk a friend’s or neighbor’s. Make it a habit to take a walk a er dinner; these are good opportuni es to bond with your children and your spouse.
Make a game out of doing household chores. You can give points or small prizes for picking up toys, throwing clothes into the laundry basket, sweeping the floor, etc. There are plenty of physical opportuni es in dying up the house or apartment.
If your child is watching television you can use the commercials as a me to work out. Jumping, hopping, touching their toes, playing head, shoulders, knees and toes, etc. With so many com‐mercials per show you can get in a good amount of exercise.
Backyards or playgrounds are a great opportunity for exercising. Se ng up outdoor games, digging in the dirt, plan ng, weeding and watering the plants is a good way to experience nature and get exercise at the same me. Se ng up a sprinkler or going to a sprinkler park is a great sport as well. Be a role model. Let your children see how you incorporate ac vity into your everyday life. Park the car a bit from your des na on and walk, take the stairs instead of the elevator, go for a bike ride with your family. You can also walk or bike for charity. You will be teaching the value of doing a good deed. Enjoy the beau ful weather and have a happy, healthy summer.
It’s Spring! Head outdoors with your children!
When I was asked to join the Execu ve Board as VP of Admin‐istra on three years ago, I only hoped the three years would fly by without regre ng my decision to accept the posi on and without any high cost incident to the building. I knew li le about facili es, and even less about how a religious organiza‐on operates. I just wanted to get through the three years.
Fast forward three years as my term ends. I s ll know li le about facili es, but I understand that what keeps our aging building opera ng is dedica on. Our maintenance and security staff go the extra mile because they recognize that FHJC is im‐portant to the members and to the greater community. They are part of the fabric that make FHJC home to so many. They welcome our toddlers, greet our teens, and assist our seniors with chairli s and steps.
Looking back, I know I have gained from ‘my seat at the table’ on the Execu ve Board in countless ways. I understand what makes us ck, how our professional staff strive to meet the cur‐rent and changing needs of our diverse community, how our schools meet the challenges of the modern family, how every interac on with staff, membership and visitors is an opportuni‐ty to leave a las ng impression.
It is true that the volunteer can gain more than they contribute. I certainly have.
Even longer than three years on the Execu ve Board are the 27 years that Bill and I have been raising children at FHJC. Each of my children considers FHJC home, and to them, nothing should ever change. But it has, with each experiencing a small part of the history of our community, each slightly different. Though all three a ended High School at FHJC, Joshua’s four years have been unique.
At our last school board mee ng, a member with a young child commented that it was a joy to see our gradua ng seniors – they are such a cohesive group. It is visible on Youth Shabbat on the bima and at lunch, and on Sunday mornings, where they volunteer in the younger religious school classes as assistants.
Our seniors have discussed the college applica on process and their concerns with leaving home, not at Starbucks, but at FHJC. They feel safe here, stopping by Lynn Lancaster’s office on days when school does not meet.
Fond memories of Hebrew High School – yes, it happens!
Though we all like to plan for our future, at mes it is important to ‘look back’ and realize all the posi ve that FHJC has to offer and the impact on each individual in our community.

Mazal Tov! June B’nei Mitzvah on. The current cons tu on was wri en some seventy years ago. Pu ng that in context, when it was adopted Tru‐man was President and the Dodgers were s ll in Brooklyn. The new cons tu on makes a number of changes that make it more relevant to the Center of 2016.
And then of course comes New York City’s Pre‐K for All ini ‐a ve. Our nursery school is acknowledged as being one of the finest available, either in the Jewish or secular world. The free Pre‐K program offered by NYC presented us with a challenge because as good as our program is, it is hard to compete with “free.” We applied for and were approved as a NYC Pre‐K for All provider beginning in the fall, and with the support of Rabbi Skolnik and the past presidents we have cra ed a program that meets our standard of excel‐lence as well as the City's requirements, and offers a wrap‐around Judaic enhancement at no addi onal charge. So this has been an amazing two months. Busy and exci ng throughout.
I wish all of you a safe and enjoyable summer and I look forward to seeing all of you in services in September.
Jack Gostl

A huge thank you to the incredible FHJC office staff—Deborah Gregor, Laurie Worthman and Alison Ederer who respond to emails at all hours and make sure that every detail is covered. In addi on, we are indebted to Dorrie Berkowitz, who reviews each issue to try to capture any errors. It’s a labor of love for all of us. For me personally, it’s been a wonderful way to further my involvement in the FHJC and I have enjoyed communica ng the incredible work of so many lay and professional leaders.
Thank you. Karen L. Stein, Message Editor
