Every academic year, Hall 3 starts off the year with our annual Freshmen Orientation Camp, where we officially welcome our newest residents into our family. This year was no different, as we brought our year 1 freshies through a journey of discovery in Voyage Du Monde (French: ‘Travel the World’).

This year, our freshies, grouped into OGs of Axis, Buttercup, Calvin, Dora & Eskimo traveled together to discover what hall life meant. Whether it be through countless rounds of ‘xi niu nai’; the utter smelly and muddy ‘war games’, splashing through the water carnival or even the specially designed amazing race programme which brought them travelling from the east to west of Singapore completing various tasks, the freshmen had plenty of time to get to know each other and the seniors who stayed on to help out.

One highlight of the camp must surely be the Special Pal (SP) Prelude and Night. Our Fresh-men were blindfolded and paired up to get to know another member through a form of blind dating. While some might have found it an awkward experience, particularly with the vari-ous embarrassing forfeits imposed upon by the seniors, it was definitely a good opportunity, particularly for the ‘just out of army’ guys to get to know another person from the opposite sex. Who knows, maybe some sparks may fly? After all University is a fresh start and a fresh beginning. The camp ended off at a high at the Singapore Flyer’s O’Learys Sports Bar & Grill, where campers watched various performances, ate sumptuous food and got to see their OG’s different pageants for the first time.

Of course the camp didn’t just end there, with the FOC Angel Mortal event following up immediately after the camp. This time, our campers were paired up and tasked to do nice things for their respective mortals – without revealing their real identity. Some angels really went beyond the call of duty – and we had a special revelation night where prizes were given to the best angels for both the guys and the girls.

All in all, the camp would not have been such a success without the hard work put in by the Camp committee and support of the JCRC. And certainly credit is due to all our freshmen this year for being such wonderful participants! All the best and we wish you guys the best for the remainder of your hall life in Hall 3!

Happily Ever After

Friendship Night words Joy Leow photos Jinni Loo & Lee Jun Da design Aw Li Jun

Friendship Night 2013 was filled with a cornucopia of delightful events. It con-cocted new brewing friendships and it was an infant step to forging stronger bonds between the hall 3 residents.

Residents streamed into the communal hall at 7.30p.m. and sat at their respec-tive allocated tables. Even the busy exchange students, Joanna and Nayelli, came down to take part in the night’s activities. Coupled with delicious food, the night began with performances by our own Jam Band and Absolut3.

Residents rushed at adrenaline filled individual and group games such as lim-bo and ‘blow the candle’ for a chance to win awesome prizes such as a $20 Starbucks card. The runner ups of each game had a consolation prize, instax photos of them and the game.

The night was a lively one, as the different blocks cheered for their represen-tatives hoping for their victory. The night was enjoyable for all; an angel even sang a birthday dedication to his very lucky mortal. Friendship Night was in-deed a night that was happily ever after.

annual general meeting

BAM! The Annual General Meeting (AGM) has arrived once again. AGM was held on 4th September this year and it was a night where the baton of responsibility was passed from the 30th JCRC to the 31st JCRC. Rumour had it that the Annual General Meeting would be an exceptionally intense night but it was instead filled with many heart-warming apprecia-tion by many seniors and residents in recognition of the efforts put in by the 30th JCRC this year.

It was not long before the minutes passed and the Question and Answer session began. Sharp and down to earth questions were asked by the seniors regarding the weak atten-dance of AGM and the hall culture. In addition, it was a time for some serious reflection regarding what could have been done better by the 30th JCRC.

While there were several questions to ponder through, the majority gave their thanks and praised the committed 30th JCRC. Amongst the many commendations made to each secre-tary, Chang An Ting, the first female president, was specially honoured for her tireless dedi-cation and fearless attitude when it came to fighting for Hall 3. Talk about girl power!

Additionally, the sports secretaries were particularly applauded for maintaining sports champion for the 5th consecutive year. Of course, this could not have been possible without the unwavering support from the 30th JCRC. Kudos to the 30th JCRC!

We hope that we can exemplify and perhaps supersede the greatness of the 30th JCRC during their time in office.

MOVIE UNDER THE STARS

Movie under the stars was a literal description of the night that we had, organized by the wel-fare committee. We couldn’t have asked for bet-ter weather for screening of Now You See Me. With free snacks and a great movie, the crowd numbers steadily grew as the night wore on. Hall 3ians also turned up to pick up delicious bubble tea and sweet popcorn. Trailers for new movies played, like the much awaited Catching Fire and Thor: The Dark World.

With help from the emcees, there was a smooth transition into the movie. It was a fresh expe-rience for many, as overheard from a resident, ‘I’ve never watched this before’. Now You See Me was a captivating thriller with stunts and tricks that amazed the audience and drew gasps from the crowds.

The story trails four skilled magicians who follow a quest to enter The Eye, a league of elite magicians. Along the way, they are helped and guided by a mysterious mentor. But wait, PLOT TWIST, the mentor was actually an FBI agent that was supposedly hunting them down.

Finally, to end on a quote overheard from a res-ident from block B, “I HAD A REALLY GOOD TIME”. Well, who didn’t?

SUBCOMM NIGHT words DENICIA LEW photos LEE JUN DA design Aw Li Jun

On a Wednesday night, the 31st JCRC, along with their newly recruited subcommittees, assembled at the Communal Hall for an event that made the 25th September more just average – Subcomm Night!

Emcees Kyle and Joannas got the ball rolling by announcing the start of the Wacky Photo Com-petition, an Instagram-based event in which the subcommittee that took the craziest photo, or Instavideo, would later be awarded prizes and points. Amidst the craziness of photo and video taking, Subcommittee Night officially kicked off with icebreaker games to help the subcomm members familiarize with each other. At the same time, each table saw plates of drinks and finger foods con-sisting of nuggets, fish balls and sausages arriving to satiate any ravenous stomachs, or to appease the ‘itchy mouths’.

After the icebreakers came many activities and games that actively involved both the JCRC and subcommittee members. The atmosphere that night was laced with much laughter and teasing, but everything was no doubt in good nature. The game to close off the night was none other than… Musical Chairs! Each subcommittee cheered their representative on as they walked, skipped and danced around insufficient seats. Hall 3 discovered a few gentlemanly guys in our presence as they graciously offered their seats to their female counterparts. The Recreation subcomm was finally de-clared the champions of Musical Chairs.

In the end, the Sports subcomm won the Wackiest Photo Competition with an endearingly coordinat-ed video. Finally, the total game scores were tabulated, and the winner of Subcomm Night emerged – Publications! Of course, it didn’t matter who won what in the end. The most important things were the joy and merriment of the night, and that each member made new friends and got to know each other better. Subcomm Night 2013 marked the beginning of strong friendships and bonds, and the begin-ning of our journeys as a Hall 3 subcommittee member.

Dinner and dance is another major event of Hall 3 held soon after the Hall 3 FOC. Here, residents gather together with friends to have good food, watch performances and recognise the achievements of our past residents. Traditionally, 2 separate events are held – a ‘Hall bash’ party and a actual dinner. This year however, we decided to combine the events into one day, first with a lunch event at Marina Mandarin, followed by our Bash at CHJIMES Club Lava.

For this year, our Annual Dinner and Dance was held with the theme of ‘retro party’. Our vision, as Josh, the chairperson put it, was to see DnD as an event where our residents, past and present, could come together to reminisce in old memories and get back together with old friends. Different performances were put forth by both our residents as well as invited guests.

Our Jamband, with Jiayang, Mervyn, Saucheng, Emil and Minghui performed acoustic renditions of classics such as ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ (Written in 1936, how retro can you get?) and ‘Lemon Tree’.

Absolut3 presented a dance item with bubblegum K-pop influences. And of course, not forgetting the memorable magician who stunned the audience with his reality-defying illusions.

Awards for the Top Sports, Recreation, and Cultural awards were issued, alongside commendation plaques for the 29th and 30th JCRC for their hard work and service rendered. The Pageants also made their appearance, dressed stylishly by our var-ious clothing sponsors. After the ‘Lunch’ we headed down to Club LAVA for the second part of the programme. The audience was involved in various games and activities, including a limbo pole dance game and various ‘balloon popping’ games. The pageants once again returned to the stage where they wowed the audience with a dance to Duffy’s 2008 hit, ‘Mercy’. The pageant took place also, where our sponsors from Shine were present as judges, and they judged the pageant contestants based on their performance.

In the end, Jireh was crowned Hall King, while Zoey was crown the Hall Queen. Congratulations!

With the recent hype of the upcoming Electric Run and Illumi Run, Hall 3 residents got a tinge of what it feels like (and nope no running involved!) as they experienced first-hand our very own Cultural Night 2013 – Glow Party.

This year’s theme was captured by the atmosphere with a dimmed hall, lit up by glow in the dark decorations done by the Cultural Committee and JCRC members. Residents chose be-tween gorgeous glow headbands and glasses. Residents were entertained by the delightful melodies from hall performers, the jam band, our newly formed acapella group and the rivet-ing dances performed by Absolut3.

The night kicked off with The Rebounds taking their stage debut performing Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus and ending their two song stint with The Fox by Ylvis. Both top hits of 2013, band guitarist and singer Firdaus accessorised to the occasion with glow sticks ties to his hair.

Next up was a duet performance by Denicia and Mervyn who performed another set of top hits, Clarity by Zedd and Little talks by Of Monsters and Me. During a short intermission, the mass game was a multiple choice question, whereby the winner was decided from the last man standing. Many enthusiastic residents participated, aiming for the Starbucks card, but ultimately, the winner was Kaleb who walked away with the prize.

The second Jam Band – The Untitled, performed three songs, kicking it off with an upbeat Animal by Neon Trees which helped to warm the crowd, followed by a Chinese hit by Taiwan-ese singer 张震岳, titled 爱的初体验. Finally, the band ended off with an upbeat performance of Catch Your Wave, which excited the crowd.

For the finale, Hall 3’s very own dance crew Absolut3 started their performance with Be-yonce’s Halo, the neat and synchronized choreography captured the attention of the au-dience for this performance. Their smooth transition to the next song Roly Poly, a catchy Korean pop song by T-ara lightened the atmosphere. The adorable dance moves by both the girls and guys of Absolut3 managed to get cheers from the audience. Absolut3 ended it off dancing to Greased Lightning from the movie Grease. The audience was greeted with surprise as the newly elected 31st JCRC did a mini flash mob and joined the dance crew, ending the performance on a high note.

Cultural Night 2013 – Glow Party, was a night to celebrate the many talents of Hall 3. Thank you Hall 3 residents for coming down to support the performances and your friends despite your busy schedules, and cheerios to the Cultural Committee and JCRC for putting this event together, making it a success!

halloween is traditionally a time dedicated to remembering the dead and all faith-ful departed believers of Christianity. However, the event All Hallow’s Eve was not by any means a dead affair. Instead, it was a heady mix of fun, entertainment and companionship – stuff that residents Hall 3 are so adequately adapt at.

The event was different in the sense that it was held in conjunction with our neighbours from Halls of Residence 12 and 16. Apart being able to mingle with residents from the cluster, this meant that the event was of a larger scale. This in turn, presented the prospect of multiplied fun and enjoyment.

All Hallow’s Eve did not fail in this aspect and the event venue; the Hall of Residence 12 amphitheatre was filled with many happy costumed faces. There were stalls set up hawking an array of wares, from Bubble Tea to Mobile Phone accessories. Our Dinner and Dance Committee were on hand too selling their exquisite Chocolate-dipped Bananas – A hot favourite considering they managed to sell out in an hour.

Most in attendance came dressed to the nines in their respective costumes and for those who came dressed as themselves, face painters were on hand to ensure that nobody was left out. Spotted were various ghosts, ghouls, a cross-dressing schoolgirl and any other persona imaginable. When asked to comment about her feelings regarding the event, an attendee dressed as a Fox only managed an incoher-ent reply of “Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding”.

Apart from the bazaar set up, there were performances, games, a movie screening and even a Haunted House during the event. Those in attendance like Block E resident and Business Manager of the 31st JCRC, Wee Mun Shuen were kept busy watching the Bands perform and moving from stall to stall. She stated “The games were very interactive but my favourite was the Haunted House!” The wide array of activities also meant that there was something for everybody and for some, that something came in the form of hollowed(no pun intended) advice. According to Viktor Rikkonen, an exchange student from Finland residing in Block A: “The Fortune Teller told me how to get an A+ for my exams!” We wish Viktor the very best for his upcoming papers.

As the night came to a close, it was evident that All Hallow’s Eve was indeed a night to remember but more importantly, provided a welcome respite from the scares of everyday school life.

Set in the olden era in the 70’s, this year’s Courtyard, hosted by our very own productions team, STAGED: Hall 3 Productions, is a short sketch compris-ing of three intertwining parts.

The story cleverly unfolds with the nar-ration of Ah Gong telling his life story to his granddaughter, Victoria, a young school girl who dreams of becoming a lawyer. We caught a glimpse of Ah Gong’s life as a dedicated policeman who was forced to take over his father’s business. Following her Ah Gong’s foot-steps, Victoria is determined to uphold justice and to protect the oppressed, particularly the women, from the subju-gation of societal norms after witness-ing her Ah Ma’s cruel treatment towards Victoria’s loving mother. We are then introduced to Jin Zuay Lui, Victoria’s soon-to-be beau, and his Kakia, aka the comedic duo who breathed laugh-ter and humour into this play.

The audience were taken on a roller-coaster of tears, aww-worthy moments and hysterical laughter in this play’s clever balance on heavy and light scenes. What’s more, everyone walked home happily with their doorgifts and their stomachs full with light snacks and the very theme-appropriate ‘muah chee’ sold during the event. On behalf of STAGED, we hope you enjoyed the 1-hour trip down memory lane as much as we did!
