As I accept the presidency of our folklore society, I give a big “Thank You” to Denise Sciandra who has led our organization for the past five years. I will strive to continue the good work she has done.

Have you ever found yourself somewhere and wondered, “How did I get here?”

A few years back I was at the Basque Jam and Linda Guerrero approached me and said she was going off the Folklore Society board and that if I would be willing to take the position; she’d give me free fiddle lessons. I accepted the honor.

When I was eight years old, my grandmother and mother convinced me to take piano lessons. I went along with it, mostly enjoyed it, and stuck with it for two and a half years until my piano teacher told me one June, that this was my last lesson. She told me that there were other children who wanted to practice more and that they were waiting to get lessons. I guess I was all right with getting kicked out of piano lessons. I’d just as soon be outside collecting bugs and riding my bike. Around age thirteen, my mom asked me if I’d like to take piano lessons again, but this time I’d be learning contemporary tunes. During the next five years, I learned a lot about music and could pound out majors, minors, sixths, sevenths, augmented, sharp diminished, and ninths. In 1970 I walked into a pawn shop and bought a trumpet for seventy dollars. A few years later, I bought a used clarinet. In 2000, I fooled around with an alto saxophone. My exploration of music was making me a jack-of-all-trades and a master-of-none. But it was fun learning.

While I was principal at Viking Elementary School, we employed the services of a gentleman by the name of Evo Bluestein. Evo taught folkdance to our students. During brief breaks in his folkdance lessons, I’d chat with him about old timey music, of which I knew little.

President’s Notes continued:

Enter the Devil’s Instrument. I bought a fiddle in 2011. Not coincidentally, my wife, a writer, insisted that I buy her noise-cancelling headphones which cost almost as much as the fiddle. About three years later, she caught the guitar virus and we’ve been folkloring ever since. It’s been invaluable being around people who know more than we do: Kenny Hall, Terry Barrett, Barry Shultz, Linda Guerrero, Evo Bluestein, Larry Cusick, Bill Lehr, Mike Mueller, Jim and Lynn Ross, and the late Tom Riddle…the list does go on.

So the first order of business as president, I figured, was to look up the definition of folklore:

the expressive body of culture shared by a particular group of people.

As Folklore Society members, we are a particular group and it is our mission to promote a valued culture. Although music and dance dominate our activities, I invite each of you to promote through our organization other aspects of our culture: storytelling, traditional crafts--what else have I omitted?

Philosophers ask, “Why am I here?” It is our work to come up with an answer.

Fresno Folklore Society at Work In The Community

Folklore Society members Steve Barnett, Mikal Sandoval, and Bill Johnson have been performing for a

monthly social hour at San Joaquin Gardens. Residents thoroughly enjoy the activity and funds generated

from the event are given to the Sue Beevers Scholarship Fund. If you play or sing and would like to join the

fun, call or text Bill Johnson at 559-259-9735 for details. (Bill Johnson)

Bill Johnson and Steve Barnett at work entertaining 12 residents at San Joaquin Gardens

The Civil War Revisited will be Oct 18-21 this year. Kenny Hall

faithfully provided the good old time music all these years until his passing.

This year we are opening up to all old time musicians, free camping during this event at beautiful Kearney Park. They have agreed to allow 30 campsites for old time musicians whether it will be RV’s, trailers, or tent camping. Ultimately, we are hoping that if, or when, the “Civil War Revisited” fades out, the Fresno Oldtime Music Campout will take over and continue to help support the Fresno Historical Society. Portable bathrooms are

provided, but there is only dry camping. Pets on leash are allowed in the oldtime camping area.
