PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Happy New Year! I am honored to serve as the 41st FFLA President. It has been a

special year for FFLA under the excellent leadership of our 40th President, Jan

Kucerik. Not only was it the 40th birthday year for the formation of FFLA, we also had

a joint conference and the logistics of planning this shared conference are quite

complicated. But, through Jan’s efforts, she and the 2008 FFLA Board made it look

easy. All who attended were struck by the cohesiveness and efficiency of our Florida

Foreign Language Association. This was due in large part to Jan’s organizational skills.

What a perfect person to bring our organization onto

the national stage at this joint ACTFL/FFLA conference! Jan represents the best of

Florida’s very special community of World Language educators and supporters. Her

professionalism and positive attitude inspire all who have had the opportunity to

work with her. Luckily, Jan will still be on the 2009 Executive Board as Past

President. Her experience and expertise will be invaluable as we plan for 2009.

The 2009 FFLA Annual Conference will take place on October 15-17 at the

Renaissance Resort at the World Golf Village. The Local Committee, co-chaired by

Jacki Cinotti-Dirmann and Cheryl Thingvold, is already at work making plans to

continue the birthday celebration to mark the 41st year since the first FFLA

conference.

Renaissance Resort @World Golf Village

St. Augustine

The theme of the 2009 Conference will be “Foreign Languages: Present, Past and

Future”. Not only will we be focusing on the changing face of foreign language

over the years, we will be celebrating all of our members — past, present and future.

If you have any photos, contributions or memories of past or present FFLA

members, please send them to me at [email protected]. Also, please voice

your hopes and expectations for the future of foreign languages and the future role of

our organization. We plan to include these photos and statements in our conference

program. To all 2009 Board members, I look forward to working with you, as we plan this very special event.

I encourage all of you to visit our FFLA website frequently at www.ffla.us. On this site, you will find a variety of

awards available to you and your students, as well as announcements, information about the upcoming conference,

FFLA professional publications, job opportunities, legislative initiatives, and much more. If you have any suggestions

or items to post on our website, contact our Executive Director/Internet Coordinator Gudrun Martyny at

[email protected].

And so, I look forward to an exciting year working with and for all of you! As 2009 FFLA President, I will continue to

seek ways to increase membership, to expand opportunities for teacher grants and student scholarships, and to provide a

quality conference experience for our members. The study of World Languages is more important than ever and I

especially look forward to increased participation by those organizations representing the teaching of critical languages

such as Chinese, Russian and Arabic. Together, we can promote the study of languages and culture in our state as we

advocate for the expansion of existing programs, the addition of new programs, the recognition of the need for early

language learning and the articulation of K-16 language sequences.

As I look back now at the FFLA/ACTFL Conference at the Swan & Dolphin Resort in Orlando, I can only say, “Wow!”It was a great conference and everywhere I went from the workshop sessions to the exhibitor hall, people were sayingpositive things about Florida. We certainly gave everyone a warm reception in spite of the late autumn chill that no onewas expecting. I am very proud of everyone in FFLA, Inc., especially our President, Jan Kucerik. We had over 50teachers from our region attend the conference and it was great to have many of you join us for the Foreign LanguageEducators of Northeast Florida (FLENEF) luncheon.

Region 3 (continued)

Just prior to the FFLA/ACTFL conference, hundreds of Spanishstudents and their teachers enjoyed a concert by Argentine singerJusto Lamas. Thanks to Fletcher HS for hosting the event thisyear. The students had a great time singing in Spanish, dancing, and watching the DVD presentation. Students also enjoyedinteracting with Justo, who signed autographs and posed forphotos after the show. He even went out to lunch with one of theschool groups! Students were thrilled to be able to speak inSpanish with Justo and get to know him a little better.

There are many new faces in the classrooms in Northeast Floridaand it is exciting to see the “rookies” joining the ranks of veteransin professional development. FLENEF was recently awarded an FFLA, Inc. grant of $500 to implement a newprofessional development training called Foreign Language Teaching à la carte: A Teacher Institute in 3 Courses. The first course was served on Saturday, December 13, 2008 and focused on planning. The other two courses will beoffered in January and February, focusing on instruction and assessment respectively. Woven throughout the training isthe theme of differentiation. Participants will be attending all day workshops presented by different instructors from theregion. They will have the opportunity to earn professional development points for use toward re-certification. Withthis new initiative, Region 3 continues its tradition of supporting its teachers with education and camaraderie. Weespecially thank Jacki Cinotti-Dirmann and Cheryl Thingvold for the many hours they put in planning andorganizing this institute.

The annual FLENEF Holiday Luncheon was a huge success, with a record number of members attending. We had agreat time socializing and once again gathered dozens of toys that were then donated to the Hispanic Ministry ofJacksonville.

The 3rd Annual Northeast Florida World Language Festival will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Orange ParkHS. Students from ASL, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish classes will be invited to participate in thismulti-county event. Pasco County schools, in partnership with Pasco County Government, is beginning a new relationship with the Landrat(county administrator) of Germersheim County, Germany. In its second year of student exchange with the IntegrieteGesamtschule Kandel, Pasco students were welcomed by the Landrat, who has initiated a new level of culturalexchange with our community.

Pinellas County will hold its annual International Day March 7, 2009, at Meadowlawn MS. More than 500 students, teachers and community members, including students from the University of South Florida, are expected to participatein the event, which celebrates the study of languages and cultures. Students participate in a variety of speaking events, including extemporaneous declamations, memorized passages and dramatic presentations. They also enjoy dozens ofhands-on cultural workshops presented by the Pinellas teachers of world languages. The event, which begins with a“Parade of Nations” and an opening assembly, is coordinated by the World Languages Association of Pinellas County.

New technology labs are being installed in Pinellas highs schools. The labs, Renaissance 2200 Systems, provided byStevens Learning Systems, Inc, are designed to enhance the teaching and learning of languages by integratinginstructional technology into daily lesson plans. Assessment tools for oral performance allow students to practice oralskills regularly. Each teacher has a laptop computer on which they are able to store student recordings. On-screenscoring rubrics, designed by the Pinellas teachers, will be used to easily score students’ oral performances.

The partial immersion and dual language programs in Pinellas County, made possible by a FLAP grant awarded in2006, continue to exceed expectations. Students in a partial immersion program spend 50% of their day learning thecontent of their grade level curriculum in the target language and the other 50% of the day in an English class. Thepartial Spanish immersion program was started in a first grade, gifted class in 2007. The Spanish classroom teacher,2008 “Teacher of Promise”, Ashleigh Smith, from Day 1 taught in Spanish and only speaks to the students in Spanish. She integrates science, math, social studies, and language arts into her daily lessons. This year she was joined byColleen Wapole, a second grade immersion teacher. Students in the program are reading at or above grade level inSpanish, with a high level of comprehension.

Also in Pinellas County, a dual language program was started during the 2006-2007 school year with two kindergartenclasses. Last year, the program extended to first grade, and new students were enrolled in the Kindergarten level. Thisyear, the program expanded to second grade as it welcomed another new group of kindergarten students. Students in adual language program are combined with native Spanish speakers and English speakers and spend 50% of the daylearning the grade level curriculum in Spanish and the other 50% in English. English speakers learn Spanish and theSpanish speakers learn English while retaining their first language with pride and self-confidence. Children in theseclasses are achieving test scores above the district’s expectations. One of the Spanish teachers in the program, YadiraVega, was this year’s FFLA “Early Language Teacher of the Year”. Also contributing greatly to the success of theprogram are kindergarten teacher, Jackie Lopez, and second grade teacher, Mildred Garcia. Pinellas County is veryproud of the teachers and students in these programs and would like to take this opportunity to invite anyone interestedin seeing the partial immersion program or the dual language program to please call Sylvia Amaya at (727) 588-6084.

Jeannine Pursley, French teacher at East Lake HS in Pinellas, continues to serve as the district’s TPRS demonstrationteacher. Jeannine opens her classroom to visitors interested in seeing the method in action and provides ongoing trainingand mentoring for Pinellas teachers.

Another Pinellas French teacher, Annette Coller, Pinellas Park HS, continues to lead the district’s teachers of worldlanguage in its standards-based instruction and assessment model. Annette, also a mentor for new teachers, providesongoing training during which she models engagement strategies. She also consults with teachers using parallelassessments designed to ensure student mastery of essential skills and concepts. A group of Pinellas teachers continue tocreate and revise assessments based on these essential skills and concepts.

Pinellas is very proud of its own Geri Craven, Spanish teacher at Seminole HS. Geri’s workshop, “Better than Coffee”,“Best of Florida 2007”, was once again a huge success when presented at ACTFL 2008. Geri will represent FFLA atSCOLT this year and was also invited to present in February at the South Carolina Foreign Language Teachers’Association (SCFLTA). Congratulations, Geri.

LINDA MARKLEY, FFLA GRANT COORDINATOR

Congratulations to Cheryl Thingvold of Orange Park HS in Clay

County! She was the 2008-2009 FFLA Grant recipient of $500 to

support her project “Foreign Language Teaching à la Carte: A

Teacher Institute in Three Courses”. Cheryl is the President of the

Foreign Language Educators of Northeast Florida (FLENEF) and

their project, a multi-district initiative, is a unique professional

development opportunity for teachers in their first five years of

teaching. It is designed to provide real-life solutions to reach all

students as well as address teacher retention and training problems

through ongoing and extensive support in order to “leave no teacher

behind”! The institute will be divided into three individual monthly

courses: planning, instruction and assessment, with an emphasis on differentiation in each area. Local

educators and community members have agreed to take part in the institute and serve as mentors to the

participants. The grant will help pay for materials and other resources for the institute.

Thank you to all who bought raffle tickets at our recent joint conference with ACTFL in November. The

funds raised from the basket raffle helps fund our FFLA grant program, which in the current economic

climate of education, is even more necessary and appreciated! So, don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets to

help support the program and also to possibly win a basket full of “goodies”. As well, if you or someone you

know in your district has a special project that would benefit students and/or the world languages

community, please apply for a FFLA grant. Applications are available now, and the deadline for electronic

submission is September 2009. Be sure to check the website and/or upcoming issues of the FFLAN for more

details.
