After falling 3OO ft the rockets engines igniteand it clinbs about a mile ahead of the aircraft on its journeyinto orbit, This particular aircraft was chosen due to ltlexcellent condition on withdralral- from service. Apparently theTristar is the only suitable airliner for this project.

The f i rst f<tur days of our hol iday were spent on Mzthe tl)elargest is land in the Seyche I les. We spent most of oul t inlearound the hote I and swiurming pool. We took the local bus tothe capi tal victoria wlrich was in the north east of thcisland. our hotel rvas on the west coast. Victoria is onc ofthe snral lest capitals in the world. The main centre ofinterest was the illarket. An Egret was perched on the f ishstaI I sampl ing the catch. Cinnamon and vani I la are twolocal ly grown spiccs worth buying. The town also has a clockwhich strikes the lrour t\sice.

At 8am on Fridal, we were picked up and taken to the airportfor our flight to Praslin. We travelled light as the luggageallowance on inter island flights is only lokgs each. Ourf I ight was on a twenty seater twin ot ter named I s I e ofFarquhar. ftying rime fifteen minutes. we were mer at the&irport and taken by minibus to the landing pier on the otherside of the island for our ferry to La Digue. The crossingtakes around forty minutes. The final part of the journey wasby oxcart. not the most comfortable mode of transport. Aftera reviving cocktail we were escorted to our rondavel, a rclundchalet complete with wildlife and a pair of bicycles forexploring the island. We spent three days on this lovelyisland before crossing back to Praslin where we stayed forfour days.

On Praslin we were encouraged to hire a car but having heardstories of cars with no brakes, wonky g,ear boxes, etc, we wereglad we had chosen a coach tour. We were sat by the rearwheel arch on the minibus and on the opposite side you couldsee the tyres through the rust holes. Bearing in rnind thathalf the roads are just rough tracks, any journey is slightlyIess than comfortable.

On Friday we were taken by taxi to the airport. The boardingcard system is a piece of coloured plastic. We were givenSreen cards. The system appeared to be that the white cardswent on the f i rst f I ight . then the blue and then ourse lves,but if the flight was not full they seemed to look for peopleto fi I I it, probably locals without luggage. Our fl ight thistime was on the Isle of Fregate.

few minutes we were tot(l that we could get off if we wished as

the pi lot had to pick up the mani fest. We didn't real ize thisnleant a trip bv bicycle through the jungle. The owner of theisland greeted us and we were invited to wait in the departurelounge, which was I ike a bus shetter with a weighing scale'After about fifteen minutes the first officer rode off to lookfor the captain. Davirl said he hoped he could fl-v a planebetter than he could ride a bike. Everything in order' thepilot gave us the thumbs up for take off' and we completed ourjourney to Bird lsland.

Bird also has a Srass landing strip. There are only aroundfifty guests and a sinti Iar number of residents on the island'The departure lounge here is the hotel. We were one of thelast guests to stay in the original chalets. A new hotel isbeing built as the original bui ldings are being lost to thesea. Some of the chalets had completely disappeared and thebuilding work on the new rooms had to be accelerated' The

previous month they had opened the new dining room and bar'By now al I the old hote I complex wi I I have been pul led down'They have lost 75 metres of Iand over the last five years'

The first afternoon we witnessed a turtle coming up the beachto lay her eggs. She got stuck in the mangroves and David had

to help to free her so that she could make her way back to thesea. The fol lowing day we went to see some friends depart on

the plane. They were al I set but the plane wouldn't start 'There is no ground power unit on the island so if necessaryanother plane has to come out from Mahe with a new battery'Fortunately this was not necessary, after about five minutesthey man:rged to get it goin8.

The f i rst f<tur days of our hol iday were spent on Mzthe tl)elargest is land in the Seyche I les. We spent most of oul t inlearound the hote I and swiurming pool. We took the local bus tothe capi tal victoria wlrich was in the north east of thcisland. our hotel rvas on the west coast. Victoria is onc ofthe snral lest capitals in the world. The main centre ofinterest was the illarket. An Egret was perched on the f ishstaI I sampl ing the catch. Cinnamon and vani I la are twolocal ly grown spiccs worth buying. The town also has a clockwhich strikes the lrour t\sice.

At 8am on Fridal, we were picked up and taken to the airportfor our flight to Praslin. We travelled light as the luggageallowance on inter island flights is only lokgs each. Ourf I ight was on a twenty seater twin ot ter named I s I e ofFarquhar. ftying rime fifteen minutes. we were mer at the&irport and taken by minibus to the landing pier on the otherside of the island for our ferry to La Digue. The crossingtakes around forty minutes. The final part of the journey wasby oxcart. not the most comfortable mode of transport. Aftera reviving cocktail we were escorted to our rondavel, a rclundchalet complete with wildlife and a pair of bicycles forexploring the island. We spent three days on this lovelyisland before crossing back to Praslin where we stayed forfour days.

On Praslin we were encouraged to hire a car but having heardstories of cars with no brakes, wonky g,ear boxes, etc, we wereglad we had chosen a coach tour. We were sat by the rearwheel arch on the minibus and on the opposite side you couldsee the tyres through the rust holes. Bearing in rnind thathalf the roads are just rough tracks, any journey is slightlyIess than comfortable.

On Friday we were taken by taxi to the airport. The boardingcard system is a piece of coloured plastic. We were givenSreen cards. The system appeared to be that the white cardswent on the f i rst f I ight . then the blue and then ourse lves,but if the flight was not full they seemed to look for peopleto fi I I it, probably locals without luggage. Our fl ight thistime was on the Isle of Fregate.

few minutes we were tot(l that we could get off if we wished as

the pi lot had to pick up the mani fest. We didn't real ize thisnleant a trip bv bicycle through the jungle. The owner of theisland greeted us and we were invited to wait in the departurelounge, which was I ike a bus shetter with a weighing scale'After about fifteen minutes the first officer rode off to lookfor the captain. Davirl said he hoped he could fl-v a planebetter than he could ride a bike. Everything in order' thepilot gave us the thumbs up for take off' and we completed ourjourney to Bird lsland.

Bird also has a Srass landing strip. There are only aroundfifty guests and a sinti Iar number of residents on the island'The departure lounge here is the hotel. We were one of thelast guests to stay in the original chalets. A new hotel isbeing built as the original bui ldings are being lost to thesea. Some of the chalets had completely disappeared and thebuilding work on the new rooms had to be accelerated' The

previous month they had opened the new dining room and bar'By now al I the old hote I complex wi I I have been pul led down'They have lost 75 metres of Iand over the last five years'

The first afternoon we witnessed a turtle coming up the beachto lay her eggs. She got stuck in the mangroves and David had

to help to free her so that she could make her way back to thesea. The fol lowing day we went to see some friends depart on

the plane. They were al I set but the plane wouldn't start 'There is no ground power unit on the island so if necessaryanother plane has to come out from Mahe with a new battery'Fortunately this was not necessary, after about five minutesthey man:rged to get it goin8.

There's quite a difference between 30 degrees centigrade inthe Se-ychelles and minus -5 degrees on Gatwick station. Brrrrr.

When I chose Birmingham University for my 3 year degree course,it rlas only coincidental that the city had a rapidly expandingairport I The majority of services are operated by BritishAirways Birmingham with their fleet of B737-2OOs. l'laersk U(provides services on behalf of BA with a fleet of BACI-ll'sand Jetst-ream 3l's. Many of you will be aware that thisoperation was knovn as Brymon European/Birmingham EuropeanAiruays and even before that Birmingham Erecutive. On top ofthis Jersey European ( 146 & F27) British Midland (DC-9i s),Loganair (ATPs & J4l's) and Manx (SD360s & ATP's) providescheduled flights. Foreign scheduled services are operated byAir France (737) Lufthansa (737, F50, Canadair RJ), Swissair(MD-80), (LM (Saab 340, Fokker 5O, Fokker 28), Base Business(J31), Aer Lingus (F50) and New Air (J31). On top of this,Britannia, Air 2000 and Airlours operate an extensive range ofholiday flights.

Birmingham has Lwo terminals, one of which is the EuroHub,dedicated to BA. The runway is slightly longer than Leeds/Bradford, at 2,255 n (7,398 ft), however, the usable 1en8th isconsiderably greater since starter extensions counteracE theproblen of threshold displacement. Also there is no equivalentto 0tley Chevin at one end of the runwayl There are long termplans to extend the runway comparable to Manchester, however,British airuays already operate 767s to New York from Birminghamdirect- Construction of a neu taxiyay, para11e1 to the runwaywill allor extensions to the terminal building. In 1985 some2 million passenSers used the airport, this has doubled sincethat time. Now that you are all familiar with Birmingham AirportI hope to urite regularly and keep you up to date with develop-ments.

For Air Uf, the aircraftoffers Sreater fuel efficiency, whilst the passenger will benefitfrom greater cruising speeds and a quieter cabin. Leeds/Bradfordstands a fair chance of seeing the new type in operation on theAmsEerdam route from April onwards since Leeds is the largestcentre not yet served by jet aircraft on the netvork. Similarlythe Paris flight is one of the most EechnicaLly demanding sectorscurrently operated by the Friendship and an early change nould bebeneficial to passengers. The Fokker 50 also gives Air UK anopportunity Eo extend turbine operations further into Europe vitha Leeds/Bradford to Frankfurt sector a viable option. Hovever,no such announcements have been made. The Friendships have beensuperb aircraft for Air UK, G-STAN is one of the oldest' built in1959. Air UX have also taken on 3 Fokker F27-500rs from themanufacturer, presumably this includes G-JEAB.
