The complete solutionEPE can offer a combined solution for fresh and waste water man-agement on board a vessel. EPE's turnkey solution is based on thepre-engineered and ready for use range of its equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONENGINEERING S.A.EPE S.A. is the leader in the field of sewage waste water treatment

plants for vessels. Having largely invested in Research and Devel-

opment EPE S.A. has launched innovative applications.

The well known series of TRITON has been the best sewage water

treatment solution for many reputable shipping companies in Eu-

rope and Middle East.

After so many years of experience on design and construction of

sewage waste water treatment plants, the company constantly de-

velops its application for vessels using Psychochemical or mem-

brane bioreactor methods.

Dedicated to its customers, EPE S.A. is in position to understand

each customer's needs and develop for them the most cost ef-

fective, efficient and reliable products and services exceeding their

corporate expectations.

Triton EVOMarine environmental solutions The public concern on the environment is constantly increasing. The global warming phenomenon, the lack of clean water and thepollution of the marine environment are issues which concern allthe nations.International Maritime Organization (IMO) is observing the increasein the size and the number of ships that are performing the inter-national trade, and has decided to reduce the impact of their wastedischarges on the natural environment. For this reason, the newregulation MEPC.159(55) was adopted and will come into forceon 1.1.2010 to replace the existing MEPC2(VI).

Today needsShip- Owner• Meet IMO discharge limits• Low operation and maintenance cost• Low energy consumption• Small footprint• Low sludge production

Regulation Requirements• IMO MEPC.159(55) regulation for the discharge limits which

will come into force on 1.1.2010.• USCG Regulation for the quality of Black water and Grey water

discharges.• Alaska Regulations for the quality of Black water and Grey water

discharges.• Indication that the discharges of the waste water from the off-

shore platforms will be aligned with the IMO standards.

Loading ParametersAll the calculations for the design of the TRITON EVO were basedon theoretical as well as actual measurements. The differentwaste flow rate and composition is presented on the followingtable:

Principles of OperationWaste Water collected in the Black water tanks of the ship ispumped though the static screens to the Bioreactor 1 (T1) whichis equipped with diffusers for the aeration of the waste. In this stageactive biomass degrades a small amount of organic material.Grey water is pumped from its collection tank through a secondstatic screen and then to bioreactor 2 (T2), for anoxic treatment. The aerated Black water overflows from T1 to T2 which is mixedwith a mixer with the Grey water. The homogenized mixture ofblack and grey water overflows to the third bioreactor T3, which isfitted with diffusers fed from blowers. In T3 the active biomass de-grades organic material

The mixture of the liquid and MLSS is pumped through the crossflow membrane for the filtration. Part of the concentrate is recir-culated back to the bioreactors without the use of an additionalpump. Clean permeate is utilized for re-use or is discharged. The system is an autonomous unit, almost operational free. The online monitoring can give specific data for the operation of the ship. These data can be easily downloaded to a PC or can be checkedvia a cellular phone.

InnovationDespite the fact that there aren't limits for the nitrogen concentra-tion in effluent, TRITON EVO biology removes nitrogen without theuse of chemicals or excess activated sludge recirculation. The cor-rect Black/ Grey water ratio in combination with the activatedsludge recirculation ratio provides sufficient nitrogen removal. Thisfact makes TRITON EVO suitable for offshore installations wherethe nitrogen concentration in effluent is an issue.

ApplicationsThe newly developed MBR system from EPE can provide wastewater treatment solution to a huge variety of vessels, from smallcargo and military vessels with 15 persons up to cruise liners of3.000 passengers. The standard sizes are:

Moreover the engineering department of EPE is ready to providecustom made solutions.

Type ApprovalThe waste water treatment unit TRITON EVO is among the first sys-tems which have been certified according to the latest IMO reso-lution MEPC.159(55) and issued with module B.

Research and DevelopmentEPE S.A. has elaborated an extensive R&D program which includedco-operation with a number of Institutes and Experts in the field ofwastewater treatment. Consequently, an innovative Membrane Biore-actor (MBR) system for on board waste water treatment was devel-oped. A unique combination of Grey (galley/kitchen water) and Black(sewage) wastewater treatment reduces the overall energy con-sumption and maximizes the effluent quality in terms of COD, BOD,TSS and nitrogen removal. Moreover the combined treatment of Greyand Black water is more compact than most competitive treatmentsystems in the market. The new developed wastewater treatmentcan be continuously operated onboard of a wide range of vesselsvarying from cruise liners to cargo and military vessels.

TechnologyThe MBR system TRITON EVO for the treatment of the on boardproduced waste water consists of:• Pre-treatment: two high efficiency static screens with automatic

pneumatic backwash ensure sufficient hair and coarse materialremoval, without inspection.

• Two buffer tanks: these tanks are used for Black and Grey wateraccordingly. The buffer tanks ensure continuous flow to the sys-tem without disturbance due to the peak or low hydraulic loadperiods. The collection tanks of the ship could be used as buffertanks.

• Three bioreactors: for the treatment of the Black water, Greywater and their mixture.

• Cross flow ultrafiltration membranes: the Mixed Liquor Sus-pended Solids (MLSS) which are present in the biologicallytreated mixture of Black and Grey water are separated from thewater through the cross flow membrane. The membrane mod-ules are placed in a pressurized circulation loop that is locatedoutside of the bioreactor.

• On line monitoring: the system can be equipped with probes forthe on line measurement of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentra-tion in the aerobic stages of the treatment, temperature, pH andMLSS concentration.
