    QUESTIONSwith? ? ?

    Bob Howard

    President, Greenville Tech Foundation

    GreenvilleTechnicalCollege

One o the things that surprises people about

Greenville Technical College is its low cost. Tuitionor a ull-time student is about $3,600 or a ull year.

However, every citizen o South Carolina who does

not already have a college degree can be eligible or

    a lottery-unded scholarship o about $1,800 per

year, which makes our tuition $1,800 per year!

And, to help with the remaining cost, students may

be able to qualiy or ederal student aid or local

    scholarship unding.

The bottom line is that college here is aordable.People or whom money is a barrier should meet with

our nancial aid counselors to see what is possible

many are surprised by what is available.

These tuition rates apply to all our courses o study,

including our college transer classes. For example, a

student could take his/her reshman and sophomore

years here and pay $1,800 a year in tuition, ater the

lottery scholarship, and transer the hours to anotherinstitution such as Clemson, USC, USC Upstate or

others. I they had the proper grades, they could

    enter as a junior.

We have about 150 certicate programs that lead

to a training certication in a technical area, such

as welding, automotive mechanics, machine tool

technology, nursing, dental assisting, pharmacy tech,

culinary arts, accounting and aircrat maintenance.

Many o these do not take two years to complete, and or these students, good jobs can be right

    around the corner.

Everyone should go to www.gvltec.edu or more

    inormation.

Im not much o a resolution kind o girl.

Dont get me wrong, I understand the whole

new year, new you mentality. But I also

understand mysel. Ater years o resolutions that

last about two weeks, Im taking a new approach this

year. Instead o New Years Resolutions, Im going or

New Years Tries. As in, Im going to TRY to eat healthier.See where Im going with this?

There is actually some logic behind the madness. For

example, lets hypothetically say I were going to resolve to

eliminate cookies rom my diet. I would think about cookies

a lot more than I have in the entire past twelve months.

Just because I knew I couldnt have one. And sure enough,

Id come in contact with a cookie, eat it, then eel the

cause was hopeless and abandon it. And then youve got

    cookiegeddon on your hands.

With my New Years Tries, though, Ill merely try to avoid

cookies. I I slip up and stumble upon a cookie, no big deal.

I just need to try harder. But thats certainly no reason to go

all Cookie Monster on a poor Girl Scout. Sure, its a

hal-ass approach. But I think its the way to go or me.

To all o you out there determined to usher in a host o

resolutions, I wish you the best. Ill try to support you as

    much as I can!

Patrick CoxYes, I am a photographer, but photography is not my job, it is my

obsession. My lie is in such a good place, and I would have it

no other way. I love what I do. I have been making photographs

or a couple decades. Seemingly I am never satised with what

I do. I am continually studying, researching, and experimenting

to nd the next things that will make me happy. Photojournalism

is my preerence, although I can adjust my style to meet your

needs. I am very capable to produce a superior product in a short

period, but nothing can beat being given the time to explore and

seek out the very best (this is a shameless hint). When I appearto wander around aimlessly, I nd that which cannot be ound

I have a thing or umbrellas. There is just something about them

Perhaps its because they are personal. Or maybe I like them

because there are so many to choose rom. When you see one

it oten indicates a potential change in the weather. The month

o January is also a time or potential changes. The Holidays arnow summed up and the uture is right in ront o us. We have

thoughts o resolutions and we likely have things we want to

put behind us. Last year is now just memories. This year might

be the best year we ever have. It also may be our last. Whethe

2011 becomes the best o times, or the worst, here we are and

here 2011 is. I tend to look or the good, even when everyone

else is pointing out the bad. Great lemonade can be made with

Henry Ford once said: Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is

    progress. Working together is success.

He should know. As the inventor o the assembly line method, Ford was notonly a trailblazer in the manuacturing industry, he became theexample o what

working smart meant. Visit any o our local manuacturing plants in the

Upstate and youll see his concept in real lie, even almost 100 years later.

Theres one thing we tend to miss in business, though. The working together

process, while it works well within the walls o one business, loses steam when

many o us think o our competitors.

The thinking goes a little something like this: Im a publication, and

theyre a publication. We both need advertisers to survive. I I work

with them, I hurt mysel. But when we do this, what we really end

up doing is missing the vision o the company, and ocusing solely

    on the end result.

The thing is, my vision may be very dierent than someone

elses. I may want to accomplish something ar dierent, as well

But i I ocus on the end resultthe moneyI can get so

bogged down in the Hatfeld-and-McCoy-mess that I end up

    missingwell, everything.

So, Ill pose this question: what could we get i we all

worked together? Sure, I may think I need that customers

dollar more than my competition, but the act is, when

we think about dollars in this economy, even the power

    company is competition, is it?

So, this year, start o on a better oot. Ill give you a ew

hints as to what Ill be doing:

    1) Find the vision. Lost it? Better get it back. Never hadone? Get one beore your customer fnds out. Dont want

one? Well, I cant help you with that.

    2) Build the plan. That would be, the plan that helpsimplement the vision.

    3) Find your competition. Who are they? When you look atyour vision and what you are doing, does it match theirs? Do you

even know? I not, they are perect or step #4.

    4) Get coee. Call them up, and take them out. Find out more about

their #1. Likely, there are ways you can help each other. But you wontknow i you dont ask.

Yeah, I know it may hurt a little. But wouldnt it be cool i

your competition was the one helping you get the next

customer? (And dont think it cant happen. Look at what

    youre reading right now.)

Happy 2011. Heres to the next partnership, the next

customer, and a year that will bring both.

One o my latest music obsessions has been listening to

instrumental acoustic guitar recordings. There is

something very very relaxing and rereshing about the

solitary sound o a well played composition on six

strings. The entwining threads o traditional olk,

classical, jazz, blues, Celtic and Indian Raga seems to

weave a uniquely satisying sound; so simple yet so very

complex, so quiet yet so startling at times. The varieties

o delightul sounds that can be conjured rom the

natural elements o wood, wire and human hands makeit all the more pleasurable. The tradition o steel string

guitar acoustic guitar recordings goes back many

decades notably to a thriving scene in the 1960s that is

currently being re-born in a host o younger and lesser

known guitarists. Here in no particular order, are six

recordings that stay in my play stack- both classic and

very new; individual artists and some compilations.

    TONY McMANUS The Makers Mark

The heavenly recorded sound o these amazing guitars

in the virtuoso hands o McManus make this one o the

best solo acoustic guitar CDs Ive

heard in ages. On The Makers Mark,

    Scottish guitarist Tony McManus melds

two o his great passions, Celtic music

and a series o some o the nest

acoustic guitars being crated today. It

is an unparalleled mix as McManus playing, which has

been called aultless atmospheric and evocative(BBC, Radio 2) with erocious technique (The Herald,

Trey Pennington is a story prospector and proessional speaker. He ounded

747-member Social Media Club Greenville and started clubs in Spartanb

and Columbia. Youll fnd his blog on marketingattreypennington.co

and hear him each week on the radio program Open or Busine

Have A Blastin 2011The advent o a new year compels us to speculate on

what that new year might bring. Jay Spivey asked me to

throw my two cents towards predictions or the world o

marketing. Ill throw in a nickels worth o speculation.

Business that thrive in 2011 will have a blast:

B is or Basics. Weve been entertained over the pastew years by the prolieration o tools and technology.

Weve been called to oster engagement and join the

conversation. In 2011, well get back to pondering Peter

Druckers purpose or a business: to create a keep a

customer. Instead o pondering personal brands or

building ans and ollowers, well ask, What must I do

to create and keep a customer?

L is or Local. Sure, the www stands or world wideweb. The big opportunity isnt so much reaching China

or India or some other geographic region with huge

population numbers. The big opportunity will be the

immense web o relationships at home. Businesses that

thrive in 2011 will ocus on the home ront.

A is or Anity. Hand-in-hand with a ocus on local wbe a renewed dedication to partnerships and

cooperation at home, too. Businesses that thrive in

2011 will look around them to see who ELSE is servin

the people they want to help. Then theyll work togeth

    to help those people.

S is or Storytelling. Humans make meaning throughstory. As consumers were searching or meaning in

everything thing we do. Companies that thrive in 2011

will turn to story and storytelling to help acilitate their

    customers quest or signicance.

Tis or Technology, o course. Technology will remain

a topic o discussion, but rather that being an end,

technology will be a purposeul means to ullling

mission. Companies will turn to people who can help

them use technology to tie everything else together o

the purpose o creating and keeping customers.

Whatever happens or you in 2011, I hope you have a

blast! I hope you have a wonderul, prospering year

getting back to the basics o creating and keeping

    customers and thriving.

I decided to put together this short clip rom a video

I thought we could all use a wonderul dose o Max

Heller to start this new year.

Many o us have touching stories about Max and we

Star Gazing or Sun Rising continued rom Page 20

series. O special interest is a nity track included rom

Tyler Ramsey o Asheville and known to many these

days as guitarist in rock outt Band O Horses.

    WAYFARING STRANGERS: GUITAR SOLI

    CD or LP

    Fourteen very rare and equally

    astounding acoustic guitar re-

discoveries rom the 1970s and early

80s are loving lited rom the vaults o

obscurity, careully re-mastered and wrapped up with

gorgeous packaging and extensive liner notes as only

the scholarly and unselsh olks at Numero GroupRecords can do. In a word: HEAVENLY.

    LEO KOTTKE 6 & 12 String Guitar

This odd but unassuming looking record released quietly

on John Faheys Takoma Label in 1969 set a seismic

shit into motion or lovers and players

o acoustic olk guitar. Like the

wizardry o Kottke himsel the story o

his discovery via the demo cassette

tape o this iconic record is the stu olegends. The Armadillo artwork on the

cover belies the alternating ace melting nger blitz wo

and the subtle beauty o Kottkes artistry.

ALEX DE GRASSI A Windham Hill Retrospective

Yes a Gene choice on Windham Hill (a label oten

associated with George Winston new age music). De

Grassi released a number o drop dead gorgeous solo

guitar masterpieces in the late 1970s. His style is eas

to listen to, pours out fowing beautiul melodies and

entrances with magical pristine nger picking. Sadly

they are mostly out o print, however this collection

gathers a lot o really nice highlights together. Aproperly curated collection is well overdue or this

    much too overlooked artist

    IN CLOSING:

I have missed a lot more than Ive included, most

obviously the God Father o it all John Fahey just loo

him up and jump in. Further investigation (or starters)

would include Robbie Basho, Norman Blake, Segovia,

the more adventurous William Tyler and or those who

like sonic psychedelic electricity and this traditionmashed up try Six Organs o Admittance.

There are three ways o dealing with New Year resolutions:

    1. You keep them and wear your determination as a badge o honor.

    2. You make them and then promptly break them.

    3. You dont make any

I know that I t into #2 and #3 when it comes to this question o yearly

resolve, but this year eels dierent somehow

I like Benjamin Franklins line: Resolve to perorm what you ought; perorm

without ail what you resolve. It sounds strict and disciplined as any

sentence with the word resolve in it should. So I am going to commit to a

number o resolutions that will aect me both personally and proessionally.

Ben will get me to where I need to go. I will resolve to...do many things.

I also like what Clement Freud, a very interesting British character and

    grandson o Sigmund, once said:

This quote seems to evoke a lot more un than old Bens stern statement. I

can also see long nights, headaches and broken hearts coming out o using

this philosophy as a guide or the new year. Fun would be had and perhapseven a little adventure or two could be in the ong. Interestingly, I nd

mysel day-dreaming more about the un that could be had i I upped the

crazy quotient in my lie. Hmmm

This year will be dierent. There will be no opting out o making resolutions.

So, I am presented with the angel and devil on my shoulders; the mature

versus the immature, the industrious against the adventurer. A decision must

be made regarding this dichotomous situation. Or does it? I am going to take

both Bens and Clements philosophies to heart.

    I resolve to
