introduction
The Gourmet Guru Academy began as a business initiative by
Nanyang Technological University- Students in Free Enterprise (NTU
SIFE) with the aim to empower self-taught cooks to earn an income.
Through the partnership with Marshall Cavendish International
(Asia) in publishing the Gourmet Guru series of cookbooks and
with the support of Ministry of Community Development, Youth and
Sports and Community Development Council in facilitating weekly
cooking classes at various Family Service Centres, these women are
learning new skills while providing for themselves and their families.
Gourmet Guru Academy’s cooking classes focus on the preservation
of Singapore’s culinary heritage. For generations, many traditional
recipes have been handed down through family members. Without
a conscious effort to preserve them, they will be lost amidst the
commercialisation and standardisation of the food industry. Food
also plays an integral role in our lives. It provides opportunities to
bond with our loved ones through the act of sharing a meal together,
or even cooking together. Therefore, Gourmet Guru Academy
strives to collect authentic recipes, and at the same time encourage
family bonding and healthy eating through our classes.
We sincerely seek your continued support in this life-changing
initiative. May this book continue to offer you refreshing insights
as you try out these recipes. If you wish to offer your support
and interact personally with the champions of this book, visit
www.gourmetguruacademy.com for more information.
Nanyang Technological University- Student in Free Enterprise (NTU
SIFE) was founded in 2009 and is part of a global and dynamic effort
to help improve the lives of those in need through the positive power
of business. Guided by our shared vision of creating opportunities for
everyone, NTU SIFE brings together university students, academic
professionals and industry leaders to effect positive changes in our
community. Through our dedication and commitment, NTU SIFE will
continue to inspire others in turning social innovations into business
success.
