We are glad to introduce you to the third edition of theRussian Theatre Festival Guide. The first edition of theGuide was compiled and published back in 2006, anonline version at www.rtlb.ru following in 2007 and arevised edition produced in 2008. For the last three yearsthe Rtlb.ru Russian Theatre Life in Brief Web site hasbeen accumulating Russian theatre festivals data, andwe are happy to have all this accumulated informationpublished in a single edition.

As it was in the previous editions, all the Guide entriesare arranged according to festival genres. The genresections are further structured according to the festivalhost cities in the alphabetic order. Each entry of theGuide contains information about the festival title, itscharacter (international, national or regional), festivalorganisers, addresses and contact information. Someentries indicate the frequency, first edition and the usualtime of the festival if such information has been providedby festivals organisers. The English translation has thefestivals name transliterated from the native languageas well as the most frequently used version of its title inEnglish, if available, or its English translation.

This new edition of the Guide has an extended indexof all the festivals listed in it. The index arrangesthe festivals according to locations, period of theirholding and open application policy, i.e. readers canconveniently find festivals in specific Russian cities,for specific months and festivals that normally acceptapplications from theatre companies.

The 2011 PDF version of the Guide has been optimizedfor home/office printing on standard A4 paper, andadditionally includes interactive features. Every entry hasa dedicated web page at www.rtlb.ru which is regularlyupdated with further information, application form andrelevant deadlines. These web pages are accessible byclicking on the festivals' title. The readers may quicklylearn about more festivals taking place the same monthor in the same city or other festivals of the same genrewith open application policy by clicking on the months,cities or application procedure words respectively.

The compilers did their best to present preciseinformation in this edition, but complete accuracy cannotbe guaranteed, and relevant festivals web pages may bemore current due to regular updates.

4Theatre Union Of TheRussian FederationNon-governmentalorganization of theatreprofessionals

The history of the Russian Theatre Union (RTU) datesback to the time of establishment of CompassionateActors' Benefit Society in 1877. It was Russia's firstorganization for artists. In more than 100 years ofits existence the association lived through manychanges and acted under different names. Currentlythe Theatre Union is the Society's legal successor witha membership of up to nearly 25 000. It acts as theumbrella organization for 75 local branches in differentregions of the Russian Federation with headquarters inMoscow.

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

RTU activities aim at comprehensive promotion of thedevelopment of theatre and performing arts in Russia inthe entirety of its forms with an emphasis on renderingspecial assistance to regions that are geographicallyremote from Russian and European cultural centres.

CULTURAL POLICY

The RTU adheres to the principles of positioning oftheatre and performing arts as one of the most significantcomponents of the cultural policy. Having at its disposalprecise information about the state that Russian theatresare in, the RTU acts as a mediator in solving problemstheatres face in their dealings with the state or municipalstructures.

SOCIAL ASPECT

The RTU is not a trade union in the generally acceptedsense of the term, yet its activities certainly have a

social aspect - RTU members can count on allowances,preferential health service and rest at the resortsaffiliated with RTU.

FUNDING

Main sources of RTU revenues are membership fees,earnings of its affiliations, including health resorts,rest homes, manufacturing theatrical cosmetics, fromsponsorship and target grants for selected programsfrom the federal government and the RF Ministry ofCulture.

RTU GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Annually the RTU gives nearly 70 scholarships to youngtheatre specialists and more than 50 grants to theatreprofessionals from different regions of Russia for studytrips - mainly to Moscow and St.Petersburg.

ARTISTIC PROGRAMS

The great majority of theatre festivals in Russia are heldwith the support of or under the aegis of the TheatreUnion, which renders assistance in organisation,programming, inviting speakers and theatre critics,establishing and maintaining contacts with partnersabroad, information support and partial funding, etc.Aside from that the RTU regularly holds conferences,exhibitions of theatre set and costume design, seminars,workshops and master classes given by leading theatreprofessionals.

VENUE

The Theatre Centre on Strastnoy Boulevard located inMoscow's downtown and managed by the RTU boaststhe state-of-the-art equipment and a hall accommodating400 spectators. The Centre offers its stage for theproductions of Russian and foreign young directors; itholds festivals and offers free public lectures for theatrespecialists of different theatrical disciplines. The Centrewelcomes creative partnership and theatre projects.

L IBRARY

The RTU library is one of Russia's most authoritativerepositories of literature and archives relating to writingson the theatre arts. Its stock of books and magazinesin more than 30 languages alone amounts to 450 000pieces.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

The Theatre Union of the Russia promotes internationalcooperation and exchange of information on national andinternational level and acts as a partner in internationalprojects. The RTU also hosts Russian centres ofinternational theatre organizations UNIMA, ASSITEJ,OISTAT and AITA.

PUBLISHING

The RTU founded the own publishing house A.R.T.(the Russian acronym for Artist-Director-Theatre) andedits the quarterly magazine Strastnoy Boulevard, 10distributed to Russian theatres free of charge. Apartfrom that the RTU supports several popular theatremagazines: Teatr (Theatre), Stzena (Stage), The St.Petersburg's Theatre Magazine and newspaper Ekran iStzena (Stage and Screen).

Relying on its vast database the RTU InformationCentre strives to ensure accessibility and exchange ofinformation about festivals, workshops and other theatreevents, as well as openings for interested individuals,companies or organizations in Russia and abroad.
