Horse Festival finaleThe Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival went out with a bang on Sunday. A family-friendly picnic followed by a stunning fireworks display by Ka Boom capped off the festival which saw record crowds at several events. Families gathered at Lake Glenbawn to enjoy wonderful entertainment which included musical acts, fire twirling, laser tag, a merry-go-round and pony rides. Organisers are already working on next year’s festival which is expected to be bigger and better than ever.

Record set at Scone saleScone’s annual Select Yearling Sale – Inglis HTBA Scone Yearling Sale - on May 15 yielded excellent results with a new record price of $155,000 set by top-rated two-year-old Extreme Choice. The top-priced filly was offered from the draft of Bell River Thoroughbreds as lot 83 and it took a Scone record bid of $115,000 for Inglis As Agent to see off underbidders Darby Racing. The previous sale record of $110,000 was set back in 2008.
For the fifth consecutive year, Newcastle trainer Paul Perry finished the Scone sale as the leading individual buyer with his son Nathan signing for six lots for $191,000 at White Park. The overall clearance rate from the sale was 87% and average prices jumped 37% indicating the industry is thriving.

Application to remove trees from Burdekin ParkSingleton Council will apply to remove 40 of the 83 trees from bat-infested Burdekin Park. Two trees were removed from the park recently after the state government gave permission for the work to take place. Council wants to expand the program after a recent arborist report found 40 trees in the park are dead or dying, and another 28 need pruning. The damage has been caused by the weight of the high number of bats living in the trees. Council says the trees are dangerous and the bats have damaged many of them beyond repair. The park is currently closed to the public because falling branches pose a safety risk.

Fire up cleaner and saferAs the weather turns colder, Upper Hunter Shire Council is advising residents on how to reduce air pollution from wood heaters. A clean chimney, using the right wood and running the heater efficiently, will help reduce the human health impact on you and your neighbours as well as the environmental impact. Pollutants in the smoke may include gasses such as carbon monoxide, organic compounds, including air toxins and fine particles. Each year Council investigates complaints about air pollution from wood fires, and can issue Smoke Abatement Notices if necessary.

Studs of the Upper Hunter launchAll eyes may have been on the horses during the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival, but the gaze has moved on to a new charity calendar that was released during the event. ‘Studs of the Upper Hunter’ features men who work in the local horse industry. The calendar will be raising money for three very worthy charities – Riding for the Disabled, Variety and the Olivia Inglis Eventing Scholarship in memory of young rider Olivia Inglis who was recently killed in a riding accident at the Scone Horse Trials.
The calendar will be on sale for $20 at local newsagencies, the Visitor Information Centre and the Neighbourhood Centre.

Well worth five minutes!Local men who took up the offer of free health checks during the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse festival have been praised. Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre’s Virtual Shed Project organised a team of nurses to travel around in a van offering five-minute checkups.
Plenty of local men took the chance to have their blood pressure and other health indicators checked.
The van was hired from Condobolin for the festival.
IT ONLY TOOK FIVE MINUTES: John Presland took advantage of one of the free men’s health checks at Aberdeen’s Rose Garden organised by the SNRC’s Virtual Shed Project.
