The festival of “ El Bollo ” has its origins at the end of the 19 th century. This is one of the three main festivals that Aviles has. Even more important than the local festival ( San Agustin) and Carnival. It represents a very important part of the tradition in the city.“El Bollo” celebrates spring arrival and the end of the Holly Week , between Palm Sunday and Easter Monday. It was declared a Festival of National Interest Tourist in 1972.
The name of festival comes from a butter cake, a typical dessert of Avilés; it has got a four leaf clover form, decorated with chocolates and chocolate figures.
The Tradition says that on Sunday of the Resurrection the godparents give butter-cake to their godchildren. Previously, the kids have given them a palm on Palm Sunday.
The same day , Easter Sunday, there is a popular parade with giants and big-headed figures, music, groups of popular dance. It is fun and it is always crowded.
Since some time ago , at Easter Monday, there is a crowded
food outdoors. The neighbords cook the meal at their homes and then they eat it on the street, with all the people in tables places all around the city. The youngest people usually go to the park.
