Festa's Recital Collection
Festa's Recital Collection
About the artworks and their titles:
I chose the title of the Recital collection as an extension of my
previous themes of travel and telling stories, comparing the
narrative of a story to the advancement of a piece of music
and accordingly, comparing a piece of music to a chain of
artworks. I want my paintings to have their own voices,
together and individually.
A successful artwork is a personal meeting between the artist
and the onlooker - a place that brings comfort and satisfac-
tion, holding in its grasp three narratives: Its own, the artist's
and what the onlooker reads into it.
Following in this booklet, you will find examples of the
Recital collection artworks as well as some of my previous
work, photos used as reference for the collection, extra notes
about my work and more information about purchases and
commissions.
Enjoy!
About Festa:
I am an artist by profession, currently living and working in
Pretoria East. I studied in multiple directions at two Univer-
sities but found that I could give more attention to my career
as artist by pursuing it full-time. Since then, my skills and
body of work have grown, bringing me success and both local
and international acclaim. I have had several large solo and
group exhibitions in the Gauteng area and I am participating
in a digital exhibition project with the Museum of Young Art
in Vienna. In 2011, from 26 April to 21 May, I also have two
exhibitions in both London and Paris with Artspace Galleries.
My style of painting is greatly inspired by the Great Impres-
sionists although the emphasis of technical form in my work
is closer to Post Impressonism. My artworks are character-
ized by the attention to light, natural colours, visible
brushstrokes and the themes of rural life, travel and nature.
South Africa is such a beautiful place, my aspiration is to
capture that beauty and share it with the rest of the world.
Mezzo Forte Oil on wood (100 x 85 x 4.7cm) - R9500
The photograph I used for this painting was taken by Ilse Kruger when
we were in Namakwaland together. She has an eye for composition and
balance in an image. Although I changed the sky, background and
foreground, I retained the shape, position and colours of the trees. I
played with the different values of line and attempted to combine the
proud and lofty vertical trees with the soft horizon and the diagonal
foreground that gives the painting an illusion of depth.
Crescendo Oil on wood (100 x 85 x 4.7cm) - R9500
As also seen in Mezzo Forte, I emphasized the quality of line in this
painting. I love painting roads, as it always produces the question of
where it leads and where it’s coming from. The photo was taken in
Nieuwoudtville, a little oasis on the border between the Western and
Northern Cape.
Andante Oil on wood (100 x 85 x 4.7cm) - R9500
A very tranquil painting, uncomplicated whilst being quite graceful. I
tried to emphasize the earthen feeling of the wheelbarrow in its quiet
setting, almost as if it's made out of clay.
Adagio Oil on wood (100 x 85 x 4.7cm) - R9500
I inserted the flowers in the foreground to add a sense of warmth and
solace to the painting, although the photograph was taken in Sutherland
– such a cold place! What struck me about the image was how the
setting sun cast such vibrant warm colours on the old country house in
the freezing weather. What always strikes me about old country houses
is the sense of honesty and a glimpse at what the inhabitants’ lives and
family history must be like.
Calando Oil on wood (95 x 88 x 2.3cm) - R9500
I love painting more down-to-earth subjects, once again highlighting
my inclination towards the style of Impressionism - playing with the
fall of light, movement and varied yet visible brushstrokes. My previ-
ous paintings of geese have been remarkably popular; I think it is due
to sense of country life and sincerity these subjects can bring into one’s
home.
Dolce Oil on wood (95 x 88 x 2.3cm) - R9500
Dolce, as an Italian musical term, refers to approaching a piece of mu-
sic softly and sweetly. As with the geese, this representation of sheep is
very straightforward and through its symbolism, colours and lighting
brings a sense of peace and comfort to the onlooker.
Notes on this collection: The artworks in my Recital collection are absolutely charac-teristic of my style as artist, my message and the highlight of my skills in painting. Collectively, they have a blue, brown and green atmosphere which brings a cool yet ‘true to nature’ feel to the paintings. There is great attention given to the softness of the skies, the natural texture of the surroundings and more expressively painted subjects. Each painting contains all or many elements of: detailed grass, flowers, trees and blue clouds on white skies, where the sunlight falls from somewhere above and behind the subjects, except for the study of the house, where colours differ because of the setting sun behind the onlooker. The human element is not present in the artworks, nor is the embellish-ment of urban life. When viewed in succession, the house, livestock, road, trees and wheelbarrow gives the onlooker an idea that all the imag-es are from one specific location or farm, thus binding the artworks and their message of travel, storytelling and home together. With the completion of this collection, I am starting with a number of paintings of geese, sheep and other country scenes in the same colours and style as the Recital collection. I’m looking forwards to sharing them with you soon!
Tips for Art Buyers: Artworks in the Recital Collection are presently for sale through the artist, resulting in much lower prices before they will be distributed to various art galleries. Each artwork is R 9500 if purchased through me. Keep in mind that art dealers add between 20 and 50% to the price, resulting in costs between R14000 and R19000. The artworks will be for sale from me personally or through my website, unframed, until middle March 2011, whereafter they will be framed and circulated. Visit my website or contact me at the details given below for any queries.
Future projects and Commission: As the Recital collection comes to a close, I am starting with 15-20 paintings similar in size, colours and subjects - particularly geese and sheep. I have been receiving orders for these paintings, as they are quite popular. If you would like to do the same, or commission me for a painting that fits this description, please let me know, as I am accepting commissions once again.
