    OverviewOverviewOverviewOverview

Industrial processing and chemical plants work at

high temperatures and pressures, often withaggressive media and stainless steel is often the

material of choice for these applications. If the

ferrite content of the steel steel is too low, then

welding of stainless material ma crack at elevated

temperature or with high stress or vi!ration.

"lternativel, if the ferrite content is too high, the

weld ma !e weaker and corrode.

#o address the need to measure the amount of

    ferrite in a sample the $elding %esearch &ouncil

introduced the Ferrite 'um!er (F') as astandardised value which related to the ferrite

content of an e*uivalentl magnetic weld metal.

#he volume percentage of ferrite can !e estimated

as a!out 0 of the F' !ut the relationship

depends upon the tpe and origin of the stainless

steel used and the measurement techni*ue.

#he iverse Ferrite meter MF300F+ measures the

Ferrite num!er (F') of austenitic and duple

stainless steel weld material. It has a pro!e that is

sensitive to ferrite content in a /0 mm area to a

depth of approimatel / mm. #he instrument is

cali!rated using the secondar world standards

validated ! 'ational Institute of tandards and

    #echnolog ('I#) in the 1". "ll /2 standards are

used in the cali!ration giving an instrument with a

    measurement range from 0 to // F'. #ransfer

standards are supplied with the instrument

allowing performance to !e verified at an time.

" variet of measurement modes are supported to

ensure that good repeata!le measurements can !emade.

#he MF300F+ uses a static magnetic field techni*ue todetermine the degree of ferricit. " rare earth magnet is

introduced into a comple mu metal magnetic circuit

such that the introduction of ferritic material at the tip

of the pro!e modifies the field distri!ution in the pro!e.

#he change in the magnetic field is detected using a

state of the art Aall effect magnetic sensor. #he signal

from this sensor is processed ! the instrument to

produce a reading. #he cali!ration of the different

readings is matched to the known ferrite num!ers of

    the econdar $orld tandards.

" ke advantage of the techni*ue over other ac

ecitation methods is that there is no error due to ac

skin effect or etraneous ac induction.

    Ferrite 'um!erFerrite 'um!erFerrite 'um!erFerrite 'um!er

Ferrite num!er is a measure of &hromium and 'ickel e*uivalent in an

"ustenitic stainless steel material and is a measure for denoting the ferrite

content in stainless steel. It should !e !etween 3- maimum !ecause ver

low ferrite can lead to cracks. Ferrite 'um!er has !een adopted as a relative

    measure for *uantifing ferritic content

    using magnetic techni*ues. #he Ferrite

    'um!er approach was developed in

order to reduce the large variation in

ferrite levels determined on a given specimen when measured

using different techni*ues in different la!oratories.

#he ferrite level is important to assure minimum eposure to

solidification cracking when depositing austenitic stainlesssteel weld metal. " lower ferrite

    num!er is !etter for corrosion

    resistance, while !alancing

    higher ferrite content to avoid

    solidification cracking in the weld

deposit. Bow ferrite num!ers are less important for applications such as

cladding where no cracking is o!served. #esting for ferrite num!er can !e

achieved using the MF300F+ and crack testing can !e done using li*uid

    penetration verification.
