FISH BITES The Marlins, who were off yesterday, open up a two-game series in Boston tonight, the fourth game of a five-game road trip for Miami. Right-hander Dan Haren (6-5, 3.45), is starting for Miami; he is 2-7, 3.41 in 10 career starts vs. the Red Sox, 1-5, 4.08 in six starts at Fenway Park. The Red Sox will start LHP Wade Miley (8-7, 4.53), who comes in with a career mark of 2-2, 0.99 in four starts vs. the Fish, all with Arizona. The Marlins come to Fenway after a three-game series at Wrigley over the weekend, going, 1-2 vs. the Cubs. Following this series, the Marlins will return home for a four-game set vs. the Reds, Thursday-Sunday, to close out the first half. VS. THE RED SOX The Marlins are visiting Fenway Park for the first time since 2012, when they were swept in a three-game series. The Marlins and Red Sox will also play a two-game series in Miami on August 11-12. The Marlins are 10-20 all-time vs. the Red Sox, dropping their last five contests and winning just two of their last nine. The Fish are 6-12 all-time at Fenway Park, visiting in 2012, 2009, 2003, 2001, 1999 and 1997. The only time the Marlins won a series at Fenway Park was in their first-ever visit here, taking two of three in 1997. TRANSACTIONS Following Sunday’s game, the Marlins optioned Marcell Ozuna to Triple-A New Orleans. Prior to today’s game, OF Jordany Valdespin (#1) was selected from New Orleans. SUNDAY The Marlins fell to the Cubs, 2-0. Mat Latos (3-6) took the loss despite allowing only one run and one hit through 7.0 in- nings. The Cubs scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and added a run in the eighth off Carter Capps. Miami out-hit the Cubs, 5-3, but was 0x3 with runners in scoring position and all five hits were singles. MARLINS’ ALL-STARS For the first-time ever, the Marlins had two players voted in as All-Star Game starters; Dee Gordon was the leading vote-getter at second base, while Giancarlo Stanton, who is on the disabled list, finished second in the NL outfield vote to earn a starting spot. Gordon will be making his second consecutive All-Star Game appearance, his first start, while Stanton, a three-time All-Star (2012, 2014), started last year’s game as the NL’s designated hitter. He missed the All-Star Game appearance in 2012 after undergoing right knee surgery. Prior to this year, the Marlins only had two players voted to start the All-Star Game: Gary Sheffield at third base (1993) and Hanley Ramirez at shortstop (2008-10). VS. THE AL The Marlins are 5-8 vs. the American League this season, 0-5 on the road. The Fish dropped all three games in Toronto, June 8-10, and lost both games at Yankee Stadium, June 17-18. Miami has lost seven straight games in American League parks, dropping the last two games at Angel Stadium, Aug. 26-27, 2014. All-time, the Marlins are 167-156 in Interleague Play, the most wins among NL teams in Interleague Play, including going 13-7 last year, and are 109-98 all-time vs. the AL East. On the road, the Marlins are just 78-86 at American League parks (including 1-2 as the “home” team in Seattle in 2011). At American League East parks, Miami is 47-56 all-time, winning just three of their last 19. ADDING A HITTER This season, Miami has used three different designated hitters – Giancarlo Stanton (3 g, 4x12), Ichiro Suzuki (2 g, 1x5) and Jeff Baker (1 g, 1x3) that have combined to hit .300 (6x20), with one home run (Stanton) and two RBI. Last season, Marlins designated hitters combined to hit .250 (10x40) with no home runs and five RBI. Stanton’s home run on June 8 at Toronto was Miami’s first by a designated hitter since Logan Morrison’s on June 19, 2012 here at Fenway. All-time, the Marlins have a combined .242 average with just 16 home runs in 161 games from their designated hitters. TURNING A CORNER Christian Yelich is riding an eight-game hitting streak, hitting .500 (13x26). Since the start of June, Yelich is batting .300 (33x110) in 31 games, compared to .220 (27x123) in 32 games combined between April and May. Yelich is hitting .297 (22x74) in 20 games in the second spot in the order. At Marlins Park, Yelich is hitting .315 (35x111), compared to .205 (25x122) on the road; however all five of his home runs have come on the road. HIT PARADE Dee Gordon is leading the Majors with 116 hits. He is one shy of matching the Club record for first-half hits, which is 117 by Juan Pierre (2003) and Hanley Ramirez (2007). According to Stats LLC, Gordon has the fifth-most singles (95) all-time by a second baseman prior to the All-Star break, behind Florida’s Luis Castillo (103 in 2002), the Cubs’ Glenn Beckert (101 in 1971), and Philadelphia’s Dave Cash in 1974 (97) and 1975 (96). Last season, Casey McGehee and Andrew McCutchen led the NL in hits at the All-Star break with 115. ROAD TRIP TO OLD BALLPARKS On this five-game road trip, the Marlins visit Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, the two oldest ballparks in the Majors. According to Stats LLC, only two other teams have played consecutive series at Wrigley and Fenway: the Brewers, who went to Wrigley then Fenway in June of 2011, and the Phillies, who visited in the same order in June of 1998. CLOSER ENCOUNTERS A.J. Ramos moved into the closer role on May 13, recording his first career save that night in LA vs. the Dodgers. Since that time, Ramos has converted 13 of 14 save opportunities and has been scored on in just two of 21 outings, allowing three earned runs in 20.2 innings (1.31 ERA). Ramos’ season ERA of 1.19 ranks third among NL relievers. FANNING WITH FLAMES Carter Capps has recorded 44 strikeouts in 20 appearances this year, including two in one inning of work on Sunday. His 17.22 so/9 ratio is the highest in the Majors among relief pitchers, ahead of Aroldis Chapman (15.36) and Andrew Miller (14.70). Capps’ average fastball velocity of 97.9 ranks third in the Majors, according to Fangraphs, behind Aroldis Chapman (99.6) and Arquimedes Caminero (98.2). Capps now ranks tied for sixth in the NL in strikeouts by a reliever, while A.J. Ramos (46) is tied for fourth. Dan Haren, who posted a 13-11 record and 4.02 ERA (186.0 ip/83 er) in 32 starts with Dodgers last year, is making his team-leading 17th start of the season for Miami tonight. The 12-year veteran has reached double-digit wins in each of his last 10 seasons. He is one of seven current pitchers to own an active streak of 10-or-more consecutive seasons with 10+ wins (Stats LLC).

Making 11th career start and appearance against Boston, posting 2-7 record and 3.41 ERA (60.2/23).
