“You are meant to fight. When you are
sick, your body fights for its right to
function. When you hold your breath,
your body fights for its right to breathe.
There are billions of tiny events—from
the surface of your skin, down to the
very cells of your body—that have to
happen in order for you to be simply
sitting here today. If your most
minuscule parts haven’t given up yet,
Why should you?”

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
- I’m tall when I’m young and
I’m short when I’m old. What
am I?
- What occurs once in a minute,
twice in a moment and never in
one thousand years?
- What has eighty-eight keys
but can’t open a single door?

In 2011, Greenpeace launched The Detox Campaign in order to raise awareness
of the links between fabrics, designers, brands and toxic chemicals. Toxins, cancer-causing chemicals from dyes as well as hormone-disrupting molecules
have been found in several “items of clothing, including jeans, trousers, T-shirts, dresses, and underwear made from both natural and synthetic materials, from
authorized retailers in 29 countries and regions.”
Nike, Adidas, Puma, H&M, M&S, C&A, Li-Ning, Zara, Mango, Esprit, Levi’s, Uniqlo,
Benetton, Victoria’s Secret, G-Star, Raw, Valentino, Coop, and Canepa have
already committed to eliminating toxic wastes from their products.

TERRY FOX WEEK
During the first week of February, the Female Campus celebrated
the Terry Fox Week in anticipation for the annual event. During
this week, under the organization of the SRC, bake sales were
held and balloons were sold.
WISH UPON A STAR
Late last January, the SRC held the Wish upon a Star activity.
For a week, students were asked to pick up a star and
anonymously write down their dreams, aspirations, goals,
wishes and hopes. These stars were then hung up across the
library corridor. The student’s dream-filled stars formed a
colorful and meaningful sky which was shared withthe whole
school. Whenever you’d pass by that corridor, you can see
our dreams and be inspired by them.
TRAFFIC WEEK
Taking part in “Together Against Traffic
Accidents”, the GSAD female campus held an
exhibition featuring various project ideas to spread
awareness of car accidents and provide solutions
for leading causes of accidents. The exhibition held
projects of different formats like models, posters,
interviews, lectures, flyers, videos, and games. A
group of the Abu Dhabi police visited our campus
to evaluate our work, and showed great
satisfaction from what they’ve seen and heard.
After they left, we got the amazing news that our
school had won the first place.

Have you heard of the UNICEF Tap Project?
Go without your phone to help give clean water to children in
need!
UNICEF Tap Project is working to help the 768 million people
around the world without access to clean water. This year you can help by taking a challenge to give up access to something far less vital
than water–your cell phone.
For every 10 minutes you don't touch your phone, Giorgio Armani Fragrances and other generous donors can fund one day of clean water
for a child in need.
Watch this quick video to learn how it works!

ENDER’S GAME
_____
Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card, is a great sci-fi book that can be enjoyed by
people of all ages, as it can be interpreted in various ways. It contains
meaningful, everyday issues and symbolism that mainly project the manner in
which we carry our past with us just as Ender does. Also, it shows how we
carry our regrets and our love for the fallen, be it by our hands or not. I think
everyone should read this book, fans of sci-fi or not, because it truly has a way
of tugging at your heartstrings with its hidden meanings and great aesthetic
value.

FROM THE GARDEN
Rafflesia Arnold II
This fascinating flower is found mainly in low lying tropical rainforests
of Indonesia. This is one of the world’s rarest, most endangered and
largest flowers and it can reach a total width of over a meter. The
Rafflesia’s survival is totally dependent on a specific vine called the
Tetrastigma vine. As the Rafflesia is a bodiless, stemless, leafless,
rootless parasite, it requires the vine for nourishment and support. It is
also a carrion plant, which means that it releases a pungent rotten flesh
smell when in bloom to attract flies and carrion beetles to aid in
pollination. Once in bloom, the flower will only last about a week before
dying.

Lion King Are you feeling a bit worn out after the mid-year exams? Hakuna Matata. This month’s movie review
won’t disappoint you. Our team’s feeling a little bit nostalgic this month so we’ve decided to extract
one of the best musicals ever produced, mix it with a little king and bring it back to be praised again.
All hail the mighty Lion King!
This beautiful animation brings to life the story of Simba, a young lion cub who is raised by his father
and mother, the King and Queen of the Pride Lands. Simba’s father, Mufasa, informs his son of how
he is destined to be king one day and prepares him for the job using his captivating wisdom, only for
the King’s brother, Scar to overhear this. Furious that he is not next in line to the throne, Scar devises
a plan to get rid of his brother and nephew by organizing a hyena stampede in the canyon Simba and
Mufasa are present in. Scar sees to the fact that Mufasa falls to his death and Simba, unaware of his
uncle’s evil plans, flees after Scar leads him to thinking that the Pride Lands will blame Simba for his
father’s death. There, he meets Pumbaa the warthog and Timon the meerkat and acquaintances soon
become best friends. Simba is a fully grown lion now who learns to forget his past, until his best
friend, Nala, shows up. Nala convinces Simba to go back with her to the Pride Lands where he learns
that his uncle, Scar, is the reason behind Mufasa’s death. Along with Simon, Pumbaa and his wife
Nala, Simba defeats Scar and proclaims his rightful ownership of the throne.

Biella
Located in Abu Dhabi Mall and Marina Mall, Biella restaurant provides
you with the finest Italian experience. The setting of Abu Dhabi Mall’s
Biella is quite exquisite; you could either sit near the cocktail bar at
spacious tables or choose to face both Al Reem Island and Al Maria
Island witnessing a unique view not found elsewhere. The service is
quite special since the waitress accompanies you throughout your dining
experience while keeping that space for your privacy as well. Moving to
the actual food, the restaurant really does satisfy the cravings of any
Italian foodie as a whole. The pastas are unique since they have their
pasta made freshly and the variety is good enough to get you confused.

COMMUNITY FOCUS
GIVE A BIKE
The 1971 Team and Social Bandage, which are two non-profit charity organizations in
Dubai, are working together to provide bicycles to Dubai’s deprived workers.
“By giving a bike, you will change a life of a worker,” said Khalifa bin Hendi, 22-year-
old Emirati founder of the 1971 Team.
Every Saturday morning, Mr. bin Hendi and Aisha
Harib, 26-year-old Emirati founder of Social Bandage,
venture into labor-concentrated areas with a group
of volunteers and search for less fortunate, low-
income workers. Many workers have trouble
commuting from one place to another since
transportation costs time and money. The Give a Bike
Campaign aims to facilitate their lives by giving them
bicycles.
“With a bike, he (a worker) could work some extra time as a gardener or as a
helper and we think that it will ease his life,” stated Mr. bin Hendi, “At least it
will save him Dh300 or Dh400, which is around 50 or maybe 40 per cent of his
salary, as far as we know.”
The campaign is focusing on construction laborers because of their many
responsibilities. “Especially we’re focusing on older people. And we just want
to say thank you. I mean, you build Dubai and put a lot of effort in doing such
amazing skyscrapers,” said Ms. Harib.
Ms. Harib claimed that the group’s social-media campaign also intends to
motivate other communities to help the needy in their areas. “We just want to
inspire our community to do their own giving, to improve the acts of kindness
in the younger generation.”
