with�Massachusetts�College�of�Pharmacy�and�Health�Sciences�(MCPHS)�University—

thank�you!�One�of�the�main�goals�of�these�fellowship�programs�is�to�increase�the�

visibility�of�the�contributions�that�the�Doctor�of�Pharmacy�profession�brings�to�the�

biopharmaceutical�industry.�Additionally,�the�programs�provide�the�fellow�the�

opportunity�to�gain�extensive�experience�within�Global�Medical�Affairs�including�

the�Global�Medical�Information�function.

These�two-year�fellowships�offer�an�opportunity�to�gain�extensive experience within global medical information and�global�medical�affairs�at�a�fast-paced,�exciting,� innovative,�patient-centric,�global�biopharmaceuti-cal�company�focused�on�developing�and�delivering�life-changing therapies for patients with devastating and�rare�diseases.

Through�the�Alexion�fellowship�program,�fellows�will� develop and strengthen core competencies that are key�to�a�successful�career�within�the�biopharmaceutical�industry.�These�competencies�include�strategic�and�analytical�thinking�as�well�as�project�planning�to�drive�results.�Attention�to�detail�and�the�ability�to�influence�others as well as strong communication and presenta-tion�skills�are�also�refined�throughout�a�two-year� fellowship�at�Alexion.�In�addition,�the�development�of�strong�business�acumen�in�combination�with�scientific�expertise�bolsters�the�fellow’s�versatility�and�ability�to�succeed�as�a�biopharmaceutical�professional.

Fellows will get exposure to cross-functional teams including�legal,�regulatory,�scientific�communications,�clinical�development,�field�medical,�pharmacovigilance,�medical/clinical�review,�marketing,�and�other�depart-ments.�Opportunities�to�attend�medical�congresses�may�

also�be�presented�during�each�fellowship.�Furthermore,�fellows�have�the�opportunity�to�expand�their� professional�network�through�interactions�with�highly�skilled�and�experienced�Alexion�employees.

Fellows will receive a competitive stipend and benefits�package,�including�comprehensive�health� and�dental�insurance.

MCPHS�and�Alexion�will�award�a�professional�certificate�upon�successful�completion�of�the�fellowship�program.

Alexion,�in�collaboration�with�MCPHS�University,�is�pleased�

to offer two unique postdoctoral fellowship programs to

expose�qualified�Doctor�of�Pharmacy�graduates�to�the�

biopharmaceutical�industry,�and�enhance�and�promote�

the�role�of�pharmacists�within�this�field.�Both�fellowships�

will�be�based�out�of�Alexion’s�headquarters�in�Boston.�

M edical information departments have access to the most accurate and up-to-date data on their�company’s�products�and�therapeutic�

areas�of�focus.�By�analyzing,�summarizing,�and�sharing�this�information�in�response�to�unsolicited�requests,�medical information facilitates the safe and effective use of medicines and informs healthcare decision- making,�which�has�a�positive�impact�on�patient�care.

Healthcare�professionals�who�become�medical� information providers within the biopharmaceutical industry�accrue�substantial�knowledge�and�skills�based�upon�their�professional�education,�clinical�and�scientific� training,�and�practice�experience.�In�addition�to�clinical�and�scientific�expertise,�a�successful�medical�informa-tion professional is able to understand and navigate intricate�regulatory,�legal,�and�corporate�issues�in�order�to�effectively�communicate�and�respond�to�complex�medical�information�requests.

Medical information departments provide customers with�accurate,�scientifically�balanced,�and�current�data�about disease states and related products and therefore are�typically�staffed�by�professionals�with�healthcare�or�scientific�degrees�and�relevant�scientific�training�and�backgrounds.�This�is�required�because�medical� information�professionals�need�to�thoroughly�under-stand�questions�posed�by�healthcare�professionals�(HCPs),�patients/caregivers,�and�third-party�payers� to ensure that the information provided is relevant; evidence-based�and�balanced;�accurate,�truthful,�and�non-misleading;�and�non-promotional�in�nature.

The Global Medical Information (GMI) department at Alexion�is�staffed�with�primarily�PharmDs�and�PhDs�with extensive experience within the biopharmaceutical industry�and�the�medical�information/communications�functional�area.�The�GMI�department,�along�with�

Scientific�Communications,�at�Alexion�fall�within�the�Medical Communications group which is part of the larger�Global�Medical�Affairs�organization.

The primary responsibility of the GMI department at Alexion is to provide responses to unsolicited requests for medical information that are scientific in nature; truth-ful, non misleading, accurate and balanced; tailored to answer the specific question(s) asked; and consistent with guidelines, best practices, and regulatory guidances. Additionally, the GMI group provides medical review and approval of promotional, educational and medical materials as part of the cross-functional medical, legal, regulatory review committees. Our GMI specialists meet this responsibility by:

• Developing extensive therapeutic area and product expertise

• Creating comprehensive standard response documents and custom responses to address questions being received around the globe

• Staffing medical booths at scientific congresses

• Collaborating with different field-based teams (including medical science liaisons (MSLs), sales representatives, and medical affairs managers)

• Preparing and delivering training materials regarding medical information processes

• Providing oversight of medical information contact center and ensuring tools, resources, and databases are available for documenting and handling unsolicited requests for medical information

• Serving as an integral part of cross-functional medical, legal, regulatory review committees by overseeing medical review and approval of promotional, educational and medical pieces in alignment with global medical directors

Michael J. DeLuca, PharmD, MBA, MSRA DIRECTOR,�GLOBAL�MEDICAL�INFORMATION�&�MEDICAL�REVIEW� ALEXION�FELLOWSHIP�PROGRAM�DIRECTOR

Michael�joined�Alexion�in�May�2014�as�Director�of�Metabolic�Disorders�within�Global�Medical�

Information.�Before�joining�Alexion,�Michael�spent�six�years�at�Sunovion�Pharmaceuticals�

Inc.�in�various�roles�of�increasing�responsibility�and�most�recently�as�Director�of�Medical�

Information.�During�his�tenure�at�Sunovion,�he�managed�a�team�of�eight�PharmD’s�and�

Coordinators�supporting�the�respiratory�and�CNS�therapeutic�areas�through�multiple�

product�launches.�Prior�to�Sunovion,�Michael�worked�in�medical�publishing�and�led�the�

clinical�services�group�at�Physicians’�Desk�Reference�(PDR).�Additionally,�Michael�has�

had experience practicing as a retail pharmacist and spent a brief period of time in

pharmacovigilance�as�well.�Michael’s�educational�background�includes�a�Doctor�of�

Pharmacy�degree�from�the�University�of�Michigan,�an�MBA�in�Pharmaceutical�

Management�and�Operations�from�Seton�Hall�University,�and�a�Master�of�Science�

in�Regulatory�Affairs�degree�from�Northeastern�University.

Jonathan Wang, PharmD SENIOR�MANAGER,�GLOBAL�MEDICAL�INFORMATION�&�MEDICAL�REVIEW� ALEXION�FELLOWSHIP�PROGRAM�PRECEPTOR

Jonathan�arrives�from�Biogen�with�former�expertise�in�Scientific�Communications�

and�Global�Medical�Information.�Prior�industry�training�as�a�post-doctoral�fellow�at�

Biogen,�in�association�with�MCPHS�University,�allowed�him�to�develop�a�rigor�and�focus�

in�Global�Medical�Affairs.�Much�of�his�contributions,�to�date,�has�come�through�supportive�

efforts�in�medical�initiatives,�ranging�from�product�launch�planning,�medical�research,�

external�stakeholder�engagement,�and�data�generation.�He�brings�much�of�his�

medical�experience�supporting�assets�in�the�neurology,�immunology,�and�rare�disease�

space.�Jonathan�is�an�alumnus�of�the�University�of�Pittsburgh,�and�currently�resides�in�

the�greater�Boston-Cambridge�area.�In�his�free�time,�he�enjoys�photography,�traveling,�

and�eating�all�of�the�bountiful�fare�the�New�England�area�has�to�offer.

Vatché Demirjian, PharmD, RPh MANAGER,�MEDICAL�INFORMATION�&�MEDICAL�REVIEW�PROGRAM ALEXION�FELLOWSHIP�PRECEPTOR

Vatché�Demirjian�is�currently�a�Manager�of�Global�Medical�Information�and�Medical�Review�

supporting�Alexion’s�complement�franchise.�In�his�current�role,�Vatché�is�responsible�for�

serving�as�a�therapeutic�area�expert�for�atypical�Hemolytic�Uremic�Syndrome�(aHUS).�As�a�

manger,�Vatché�is�also�responsible�for�providing�support�to�US�field�teams,�global�affiliates,�

and�health�care�practitioners�internationally.�Prior�to�joining�Alexion,�Vatché�worked�as�an�

internal�medicine�pharmacist�at�Robert�Wood�Johnson�University�Hospital�(RWJUH)�in�

New�Jersey.�He�also�completed�a�PGY2�residency�specializing�in�Drug�Information�at�

RWJUH,�where�he�served�as�a�preceptor�to�APPE�and�IPPE�students.�Prior�to�his�residency,�

he�completed�a�post-doctoral�fellowship�in�medical�affairs�at�Haymarket�Medical�Education.�

Vatche�received�his�Doctor�of�Pharmacy�degree�from�MCPHS�University�in�Boston,�MA.�

Gabriela Marcheva, PharmD SECOND-YEAR�GLOBAL�MEDICAL�INFORMATION�FELLOW

Gabriela�joined�the�Alexion�Global�Medical�Information�team�in�July�2017.�Gabriela�is�

currently�in�her�second�year�of�the�fellowship�supporting�the�complement�franchise.�Prior�

to�joining�Alexion,�Gabriela�received�her�Doctor�of�Pharmacy�degree�from�Mercer�University�

College�of�Pharmacy�in�Atlanta,�GA.�Gabriela�completed�a�Medical�Information�rotation�at�

UCB�North-America�headquarters�in�Atlanta.�Additionally,�Gabriela�completed�a�number�of�

clinical�rotations�at�various�hospital�sites�in�the�Atlanta�region.�During�her�advanced�

practice�pharmacy�training,�Gabriela�gained�experience�in�a�variety�of�settings�including�

ambulatory�care,�managed�care,�and�retail�pharmacy.

Matthew Luen, PharmD FIRST-YEAR�GLOBAL�MEDICAL�INFORMATION�FELLOW

Matthew�joined�the�Alexion�Global�Medical�Information�team�in�July,�2018.�As�a�fellow�in�

the�Global�Medical�Information�team,�Matthew�supports�the�metabolic�disorder�franchises.�

Matthew�is�originally�from�Gaithersburg,�Maryland�and�received�his�Doctor�of�Pharmacy�

degree�from�Rutgers�University.�Prior�to�the�fellowship,�Matthew�completed�internship�

experiences�in�Medical�Information�at�Janssen�and�in�the�REMS�department�at�the�FDA.�

The Alexion Global Medical Information Fellowship will give the fellow�the�opportunity�to�learn:• The core functions of global medical information:

- Respond to unsolicited requests for information

- Staff medical booths at medical congresses

- Perform literature searches

- Develop standard and custom responses

• Laws, regulations, regulatory guidances governing the medical information function

• Roles and functions of regulatory, legal, marketing, sales training, etc. by participating in cross-functional medical, legal, and regulatory review committees

• Drug development, particularly the development of biologics in the orphan drug/rare disease space

• Laws, regulations, and regulatory guidances governing marketing and promotion

• Roles and functions of different field-based teams (sales representatives, medical science liaisons, medical affairs managers, etc.)

The Alexion Global Medical Information Fellowship will provide�the�fellow�the�opportunity�to�further�develop�communications�skills�(both�verbal�and�written),�to�develop�project�management�skills,�to�increase�under-standing�of�drug�development,�and�to�learn�about�the�rare diseases and therapeutic areas in which Alexion is focused�on�developing�treatments.�These�areas�include:

HEMATOLOGY,�NEPHROLOGY,�NEUROLOGY,� AND�METABOLIC�DISORDERS.

During�the�first�year�of�this�fellowship,�the�fellow�will�focus on acclimating to the role and function of Global�Medical�Information,�and�learn�and�develop� an expertise about the diseases and therapeutic areas in�which�Alexion�is�focused.

The fellow will also begin to perform some of the core functions of global medical information which also includes�providing�medical�review�of�promotional,� educational and medical materials as part of the cross-functional�medical,�legal,�regulatory� review�committees.

During�the�second�year�of�the�fellowship,�the�fellow�will function as a core member of the Global Medical Information�team,have�the�opportunity�to�fully�experi-ence the role of a medical information specialist in the biopharmaceutical�industry�and�continue�to�assist�with�review�of�promotional�materials�as�part�of�the�Medical,�Legal,�and�Regulatory�review�team.�The�fellow�will�also�have�the�opportunity�to�take�an�elective�assignment�with another department based on business needs and�the�fellow’s�interests.�Possible�elective�assignments�could include a rotation at Alexion’s medical informa-tion�call�center,�regulatory�affairs�advertising�and� promotion,�scientific�communications,�a�ride�along�with�the�Medical�Science�Liaisons,�etc.�Furthermore,�the�fellow�will�have�the�opportunity�to�attend�professional�development�meetings�or�seminars,�such�as�the�Drug�Information�Association�(DIA)�Medical�and�Scientific�Communication�Annual�Forum.

During my time at Alexion, I have gained invaluable experience in

the Global Medical Information function. Working at a company

dedicated to developing robust therapies in the space of rare diseases

is extremely exciting and rewarding. Due to the flexibility of the

fellowship program, I am also able to gain exposure to other depart-

ments such as Scientific Communications, Field Medical, Regulatory,

etc. This fellowship has provided me the opportunity to identify areas

of best interest and shape a well-rounded experience in order to

better prepare myself for a successful industry career.

T he�primary�responsibility�of�the�Global�Medical�Affairs team is to develop the Global Medical Affairs�strategic�plan,�namely�evidence�

generation�(phase�IIIB/IV�studies),�scientific�commu-

nications,�and�scientific�engagement.�Global�Medical�

Affairs�consists�of�a�variety�of�core�functions�including�

Medical�Communications,�Health�Outcomes�Research,�

Global�Medical�Affairs�team�works�closely�with�a�wide�

range�of�other�functional�areas�including�Commercial,�

Clinical�Development,�Regulatory,�Compliance,�and�

others.�This�collaboration�facilitates�the�achievement�

of Alexion’s goal of developing and delivering

life-changing therapies for patients with devastating

and�rare�diseases.

Global Medical Affairs Leaders (GMALs) lead groups of

Global Medical Directors who help develop and drive

the execution of the Global Medical Affairs strategic

plans.�Based�on�global�guidance,�country-level�medical�

affairs teams develop their local Medical Affairs Plans

that�are�in�line�with�country-specific�strategies,�laws,�

and�regulations.�The�Global�Medical�Affairs�fellow�will�

work�closely�with�Global�Medical�Directors�and,�later�

in�the�fellowship,�may�have�the�opportunity�to�obtain�

country-level�medical�affairs�experience.�Furthermore,�

the fellow will have the chance to work with other

medical affairs stakeholders and cross-functional

teams in order to obtain a complete medical affairs

experience and to develop core competencies critical

for�medical�affairs�professionals.

Anna Petryk, MD SENIOR�MEDICAL�DIRECTOR,�GLOBAL�MEDICAL�AFFAIRS�LEAD,�HPP ALEXION�FELLOWSHIP�PROGRAM�PRECEPTOR�

Anna�Petryk�is�a�Senior�Medical�Director�

and a Global Medical Affairs Lead for

HPP�at�Alexion�Pharmaceuticals.�Prior�

to�joining�Alexion,�Anna�was�a�tenured�Professor�of�Pediatrics�

at�the�University�of�Minnesota,�specializing�in�pediatric�endocri-

nology.�Anna�completed�her�medical�school�training�in�Poland�

and�Scotland,�followed�by�residency�training�in�pediatrics�at�

Miami�Children’s�Hospital�and�a�pediatric�endocrine�fellowship�

at�Duke�University.�She�was�voted�one�of�the�Best�Doctors�in�

America and has extensive experience mentoring graduate

students�and�postdoctoral�fellows.�She�has�served�on�steering�

committees�of�training�programs,�review�panels�for�external�

funding�agencies,�and�several�editorial�boards.�Anna�has�pub-

lished�92�papers,�authored�9�book�chapters,�and�presented�over�

160�abstracts�at�national�and�international�meetings.�She�was�

a leading contributor to published consensus statements and

guidelines�on�behalf�of�the�Pediatric�Endocrine�Society.�

Adam Quicquaro, PharmD FIRST-YEAR�GLOBAL�MEDICAL�AFFAIRS�FELLOW

Adam joined the Alexion Global Medical

Affairs�team�in�July,�2018.�As�a�fellow�in�

the�Global�Medical�Affairs�department,�

Adam supports the metabolic disorder

franchises.�Adam�is�originally�from�Watertown,�Connecticut�

and�received�his�Doctor�of�Pharmacy�degree�from�MCPHS�

University�in�Boston,�Massachusetts.�Prior�to�the�fellowship,�

Adam completed internship experiences in Global Medical and

Clinical�Review�at�Alexion�Pharmaceuticals�and�in�the�Global�

Medical�Affairs�department�at�BD�Medical.�

Global Medical Affairs Fellowship

The Alexion Global Medical Affairs Fellowship will give the fellow the opportunity�to:• Learn how to develop a Global Medical Affairs Plan (MAP) and an integrated evidence/scientific communication plan under the direction of the Global Medical Affairs Leader (GMAL).

• Develop capabilities on how to implement designated elements of the MAP, such as preparation for advisory boards and symposia in full compliance with scientific engagement standards and regulations.

• Provide insightful medical/scientific input to brand campaigns and launches.

• Support the development of promotional, non- promotional, and training materials in accordance with codes/regulations.

• Support excellence in external engagement with key stakeholders (HCPs, patients, payers, and regulators) to gain a deep understanding of customer needs.

• Learn how to identify data gaps and design appropriate studies to support those data gaps in partnership with commercial and development colleagues, including:

- Supporting the Integrated Global Medical Affairs team

- Developing Alexion-sponsored research

The Global Medical Affairs fellowship at Alexion offers a unique

opportunity for the fellow to work directly under highly experienced

senior leaders in the rare disease realm. Shortly into the fellowship,

the fellow will discover unmet medical needs for patients with rare

and life threatening diseases. As I operate in the Global Medical Affairs

department, I find fulfilling work that addresses these unmet medical

needs that confront rare disease patients each day. The program

simultaneously provides me with an invaluable experience that

will foster my development as I transition from a fellow into a

biopharmaceutical industry professional.”

Amee Mistry, PharmD DIRECTOR�OF�THE�POSTDOCTORAL�BIOPHARMACEUTICAL�INDUSTRY�FELLOWSHIP�PROGRAM

Dr.�Amee�Mistry�is�an�Associate�Professor�of�Pharmacy�Practice�and�has�been�with�MCPHS�

University�since�2006.�Dr.�Mistry�earned�her�PharmD�at�the�Albany�College�of�Pharmacy�and�

completed�a�PGY1�Community�Practice�Residency�with�Walgreens�and�MCPHS�University.�

In�2015,�Dr.�Mistry�took�over�as�Director�of�the�MCPHS�Biopharmaceutical�Industry�Fellowship�

program.�She�works�directly�with�leaders�in�the�area�to�continue�to�foster�growth�and�develop-

ment�of�the�post�graduate�program,�and�to�assist�the�fellows�in�attaining�positions�within�the�

pharmaceutical�industry.�She�also�continues�to�teach�and�conduct�scholarly�work�at�MCPHS�

University,�trains�pharmacists�and�student�pharmacists�nationally�on�immunizations,�and�is�

actively�involved�in�her�state�and�national�pharmacy�organizations.

Sheila M. Seed, PharmD, MPH, RPh MCPHS�FACULTY�PRECEPTOR

Sheila�is�Professor�and�Interim�Chair�of�Pharmacy�Practice�at�MCPHS�University,�School�of�

Pharmacy�Worcester/Manchester.�She�has�been�with�the�University�since�2001�where�she�teaches�

several�courses�related�to�public/global�health,�has�an�ambulatory�care�practice�site�and�works�

collaboratively�with�an�infectious�disease�specialist�at�a�travel�clinic.�She�received�her�BS�in�

Pharmacy�from�the�Massachusetts�College�of�Pharmacy�and�Health�Sciences,�a�Master’s�in�

Public�Health�from�the�University�of�Massachusetts,�Amherst�and�a�Doctor�of�Pharmacy�from�

Idaho�State�University.�She�also�served�as�a�pharmacy�officer�in�the�U.S.�Air�Force.�She�is�a�

member�of�several�professional�societies,�including�the�International�Society�of�Travel�Medicine,�

where�she�serves�as�a�pharmacy�steering�committee�member;�the�American�Association�of�

Colleges�of�Pharmacy�where�she�has�served�on�a�number�of�committees�within�the�Public�

Health�SIG;�and�the�American�Pharmacists�Association,�where�she�was�a�Coordinator�of�the�

APhA�Immunizing�Pharmacists�SIG.

Eligibility

The�MCPHS�Biopharmaceutical�Industry�fellows�will� be�selected�on�a�nationally�competitive�basis,�with� interviews�at�the�American�Society�of�Health�Systems�Pharmacists�(ASHP)�Midyear�meeting.�

•��Applicants�must�have�a�Doctor�of�Pharmacy�degree�from�an�ACPE�accredited�college�of�pharmacy�at�the�commencement�of�the�program.

• Candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills and a strong interest in pursuing a�career�within�the�biopharmaceutical�industry.

• All candidates must have authorization to work in the United�States�throughout�the�duration�of�the�one�or�two�year�fellowship.�No�visa�sponsorship�will�be�provided.�
