    Fellowship Essay

During my college days I started out with the National Social service scheme (NSS) and worked onweekends for underprivileged children and taught in schools and villages. We had a team of 20 peoplewho used to go out on weekends to nearby villages and teach the underprivileged children for free of

cost. We also started a drive to collect old books and newspapers and used to donate the books to thechildren and students alike. We set out collecting newspapers from the campus and sold thenewspapers to raise money for supporting the fees of school children, I had personally managed to

collect about 50 kgs of old newspapers and collectively in our drive we were able to raise enough moneyto support the education of 30 children for a year.

A batch mate of mine from the college was from a very humble background and was unable to continuehis education due to the paucity of funds. He had decided to drop and go back and join his family in

their agricultural land but I had intervened and with the help of my classmates managed toanonymously raise enough funds to fund a semester of his education and then I went ahead and

persuaded the department and the dean of Student Affairs to give him scholarship under specialcircumstances which was refused due to been outside the laws of the university but a few professorstook upon themselves to see that he received funding through Faculty funds and managed to secure hima loan from a bank. He not only stayed on to complete his degree but also went ahead and secured a

    very good job.

After graduating from college and joining my job at National Instruments, I pledged a portion of mysalary for the education of my maid s daughter and paid the fees in advance for a year for her schoolingand other expenses. At my job I had joined a club that used to go out regularly at weekends to support

an orphanage we had adopted. I not only supported the orphanage financially but also used to devote

my time and effort teaching kids over there and helped them in their studies.

All these experiences have enriched my life and have taught me the real meaning of life and the joy of helping others. With these experiences I have not only become a better person but also more focused

on developing tools and methodologies for helping people around me and not just pursue theoreticalsciences. These realizations led me to join a startup company and today I am focusing on the researchand making products that are benefitting the rural and backward areas. I hope that with more research

and facilities and time at PURDUE I would be able to better achieve this goal.
