A Letter from the President…

Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to be finding more time to stick stuff in the monthly newsletter. This month we are clocking in at 60 pages. Try to take it in sections folks. Let me continue to express my hopes that you are all safe, and please reach out if there is anything the club can do to help you all. I wanted to again remind you that the AGM, IJF, Sonoma Speed Fest, La Jolla Concours, and Pebble Beach are all cancelled until 2021; most JCNA events cancelled or postponed until next year; in SoCal, we are still moving forward with several events nearby: PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING CHANGES:

Our Inland Empire Jaguar Club has COMBINED shows with the Los Angeles Jaguar Owners Club for a joint event, the weekend of Friday, Oct 2 through Sunday October 4. One weekend. Two Shows. 3 days of fun in Idyllwild. For You.

The San Diego Jaguar Club Concours has been moved again to the NEW DATE of Saturday, October 17.

The JCSA will have their wonderful event in Tucson on Saturday, October 24.

We are making all accommodations for entrant safety and fun. These may be the only shows this year, and we would love to see each of you. Now to this month’s newsletter. These are tenuous times for the JLR brand. Last month we gave you a glimpse at where Jaguar was headed as a company. This month see another interesting take on what both Jaguar and Land Rover could be offering for the coming year.

On that note, see an introduction to the person leading the charge for Jaguar as the new CEO, Thierry Bollore. Last month we spent a lot of time looking back. This month we will look forward. Those who drive a modern Jaguar are familiar with the Ingenium engine platform. That platform hit a milestone this year – see a history in the pages below. An eternal debate among British car owners is: which is more British? Jaguar or Aston Martin. For a point by point debate of this interesting question see the article in this month’s edition. You may be surprised…. As a fan of both the XJS and the station wagon, I have always loved the Lynx Eventer. See a cool article about a rare opportunity to own a XJR-S Lynx Eventer Shooting Brake (cover photo). In club news, I have offered a brief synopsis of Covid-crazy projects I have going on under my roof. It may not be a restoration caliber shop, but we are making the magic happen… IEJC is proud to announce our new sponsor; BRITISH MARQUE Magazine. See info in the club section. Hey! Jaguar News

These are the totally new cars Jaguar Land Rover could unveil

They include a £25k Land Rover and a Jaguar hatchback

Land Rover DC100 concept

It’s a tough time for the automotive industry right now and there’s much talk about what Jaguar Land Rover needs to do to get back on track.

For Britain’s biggest car maker the coronavirus crisis has been an additional challenge to those it was dealing with already.

Like any car maker Jaguar Land Rover’s success will depend on its model range moving forward.

Jaguar Land Rover’s next generation of models will include new versions of existing models, such as the Range Rover and Jaguar XJ, but also some all-new exciting creations.

Speculation about such models can be fanciful but it’s fun nonetheless.

CoventryLive has looked at several new creations that could be on the cards for the car maker - including a £25,000 Land Rover and a Jaguar hatchback.

Page 8: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Here we round-up some of the totally new models that might be coming in 2020 or 2021.

Could a £25k Land Rover be on the cards?

Could a £25,000 Land Rover be in the pipeline as part of plans to expand the marque’s vehicle line-up?

Speculation emerged at the beginning of 2020 that just such a vehicle could form part of Land Rover’s plans going forward. The possibility was mooted in a number of places, most notably by the car magazine Autocar.

If speculation proves to be correct the new model would be inspired by the new Land Rover Defender, which was unveiled in September 2019.

That would be welcomed by fans of the old Defender who would welcome a more basic and affordable addition to the range. Talk of a ‘baby’ Land Rover has always been around - ever since the original Freelander model was launched.

The Freelander proved a big success for Land Rover in both Freelander and Freelander 2 forms, before being replaced by the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The Discovery Sport is way larger than a Freelander of old and with a starting price of more than £31,000 is not cheap.

Page 9: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

But a £25,000 Land Rover would bring many new buyers to the Land Rover brand.

Currently the smallest SUV in the Jaguar Land Rover stable is the Jaguar E-Pace.

It has been suggested that it was originally planned to be a Land Rover vehicle rather than a Jaguar.

Much of the detail on what the £25,000 Land Rover would be like was described by Hilton Holloway writing in Autocar.

He said the new vehicle, which would be cheaper in real terms than any previous Land Rover model, is believed to be codenamed L860 and is expected to arrive in 2021.

He added that the new model is said to draw heavily on the new Defender as well as referencing the original Land Rover. Also that it will not be as square-edged and mechanical as the controversial 2011 DC100 concept.

The DC100 concept was originally unveiled as a possible Defender replacement but the design was not well received by Land Rover aficionados.

Page 10: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

On the inside it is believed the new model will also adopt the more functional look of the new Defender.

As to what the new model might be called, speculation is limited.

It is not thought likely it would adopt either a Defender or Discovery name.

Autocar suggests it could be something as simple as the Land Rover 80, a reference to the wheelbase of the original Series 1 Land Rover.

Page 11: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

According to Autocar the new model would compete against vehicles like the Jeep Compass, Mini Countryman, Volkswagen Tiguan, BMW X1 and Volvo XC40.

From a strategic perspective such a new model would help Jaguar Land Rover cope with incoming EU CO2 regulations and the requirement to hit an average of 130g/km of CO2 by 2021.

It is thought that the new baby Land Rover would be built in the car maker’s Slovakian factory alongside the new Defender and the latest Discovery.

Labour costs are significantly lower in the former Easter bloc country, something which could help keep the price down.

Page 12: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

The latest Range Rover Evoque. A new even smaller 'baby' Range Rover would likely share much of its design language

Could Land Rover have an ace up its sleeve with plans for the smallest Range Rover yet - a ‘baby’ model that could compete against variants of BMW’s MINI and other premium compact SUVs? The prospect was suggested in June by Auto Express and the magazine believes it is not just a pipe dream but close to becoming a reality.

The Auto Express report describes the move as “Land Rover’s best-kept secret”.

The new vehicle would be very much a compact SUV and could compete against the MINI Countryman and smaller premium SUVs like the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

Low price

Auto Express suggests the new vehicle could even have a starting price of £25,000.

The report said: “Auto Express has learned the firm plans to continue the trend set by the stylish new Evoque, and scale down the Range Rover brand further with a smaller, sportier crossover.”

It added: “It will feature a shorter wheelbase, meaning less space for rear passengers but ensuring the car is even more nimble and practical around town.

“Lower suspension, a more steeply raked roofline and shorter overhangs give the baby the appearance of a jacked-up hatch.

“But with a price of less than £25,000, it aims to tempt affluent young buyers away from the default choice of top-spec VW Golfs and Audi A3s.”

Page 14: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Jaguar Land Rover reported to be delaying launch of electric XJ model

Auto Express also showed images of what it thinks such a vehicle might look like.

The three-door rendering created for Auto Express looks not unlike a slightly ‘squashed’ Range Rover Evoque.

It goes on to point to clues that a vehicle like could be produced given by Land Rover design supremo Gerry McGovern, who said to the magazine: “Well, you haven’t seen the bookends yet.”

Land Rover's chief design officer Gerry McGovern (Image: Coventry Telegraph)

CoventryLive spoke to Land Rover’s design boss Gerry McGovern earlier this year and, among many other things, asked him about the prospect of smaller Land Rover vehicles.

He was guarded, as one might expect - car makers do not generally discuss future product plans - but he did not deny the prospect and gave a brief answer that suggested some could well be coming.

He said: “One thing I think we have been very good at is surprising people.”

The concept of ‘baby’ Land Rovers is not a new one.

Page 15: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Back in the 1990s the firm broke with tradition when it launched the Land Rover Freelander - billed as a ‘baby Land Rover’ at the time.

The original Freelander was available in three-door and five-door form.

It was later replaced by the larger Freelander 2, which in turn was discontinued when the Discovery Sport model was launched.

A ‘baby’ Range Rover would definitely break new territory for the Range Rover family going forward.

Many might have thought that the Evoque was as small as a Range Rover might get but could it go one step further?

We will have to wait and see but as Jaguar Land Rover emerges from the coronavirus pandemic new models will be key to its success going forward.

With talk also of a £25,000 Land Rover and a £25,000 Range Rover could represent another budget assault on the mass market.

Could Jaguar launch a hatchback as a saloon replacement?

The Jaguar R-D6 concept

As Jaguar Land Rover seeks to get back on track in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic there is much speculation about what it might do regarding Jaguar.

Page 17: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

There is a school of thought that suggests the Jaguar brand could look very different with two of the marque’s saloons ditched in favour of a compact hatchback.

The bold move would see the XE and XF saloons replaced by a single hatchback model. The possibility was suggested by the magazine Autocar.

It is not the first time a single replacement has been mooted for the XE and XF, though previously it has been suggested the two models would be replaced by a single saloon model.

In fact Autocar also said a new electric saloon to replace both the XE and XF is being considered.

The Autocar report said: “Jaguar is weighing up a number of options for replacing its slow-selling XE and XF saloons, including a radical electrified saloon and a smaller, hatchback-style model.”

It added: “Jaguar hasn’t ruled out directly replacing the two saloons but, with the market shifting away from such models, Autocar understands the firm is considering radical alternatives. One option is to replace both with a single, eco-focused compact saloon, likely offering both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

“The other option, as hinted at by new Jaguar design chief Julian Thomson recently, would be to look at building a smaller car. Possibly about 4.5 metres long, it would be more elegant and styled in a more classical way than Germany’s aggressively machined premium cars.”

Page 18: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Jaguar’s future - what’s next for the Big Cat? Launching a hatchback would be a step into a brave new world for Jaguar, a marque traditionally associated with sports cars and sporty saloons.

Page 19: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

However it has already broken with tradition by launching a number of SUVs.

The first of these was the F-Pace, which was followed by the smaller E-Pace and the all-electric I-Pace.

All have proved a much-needed shot in the arm for Jaguar - the E-Pace and F-Pace are the brand’s best-selling models - and there is even talk of a larger J-Pace SUV being produced.

Saloons remain a challenge for Jaguar, though plans are in the pipeline for a new XJ executive saloon, which it is believed will be all-electric only.

The popularity of conventional saloons and estate cars has dwindled due to the rise of the SUV.

Added to that the premium saloon market is dominated by the German ‘Big Three’ - Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

A new Jaguar hatchback could take its styling cues from the R-D6 - a concept car displayed at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. It followed on from the R-Coupé concept of 2001.

In 2003 the R-D6 represented a further development of the new design direction for Jaguar, under the leadership of its then new design director Ian Callum, and Julian Thomson who has since succeeded him.

Traditional Jaguar cues in the exterior design were the grille, the four round headlamps faired into the bonnet, and the shape of the rear side window.

The shape of the rear quarters, the side-hinged rear hatch, and the position of the exhaust tail pipes all recalled the E-type fixed head coupé of the 1960s.

The R-D6 was a compact hatchback coupé with four seats, featuring unusual pillarless construction with rear-hinged rear doors.

Page 20: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Ian Callum at the re-opening of the Jaguar Heritage Museum in Browns Lane, Coventry

The R-D6 was the first public project of Mr Callum and as a 17-year-old concept it has aged well.

One of the big benefits of launching a hatchback would be giving Jaguar a foothold in a large market - the premium hatchback segment.

However, a challenge facing the company would be finding a suitable platform for such a new car.

The next XJ will be based on a new MLA platform and though it is versatile it might not lend itself to smaller cars.

Jaguar Land Rover is teaming-up with BMW to develop electric drive units (EDUs)

As such Jaguar Land Rover might need to have a platform-sharing project with another manufacturer.

The easiest route might be a deal to utilise BMW’s UKL architecture, used for the 1 Series, 2 Series Gran Coupé and Mini hatchback.

Page 21: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Jaguar Land Rover already has a powertrain partnership with BMW and closer ties could easily be established.

If Jaguar does decide to continue with saloons that are smaller than the XJ, it is possible it might consider a single replacement for the XE and XF based on the new MLA platform.

Jaguar said to be planning another SUV - the J-Pace

Back in April 2018 CoventryLive speculated on the possibility of a big Jaguar SUV being launched.

Expected to be called the J-Pace, since then Jaguar Land Rover has pretty much said it is on the cards.

However the car maker has yet to confirm it fully and with the new XJ being put back due to the coronavirus situation the same could happen with the J-Pace or maybe it could be shelved altogether.

Back in 2018 we said how the J-Pace would be the fourth SUV in the marque’s line-up and aim to be a rival to the Porsche Cayenne.

The plan was revealed in the automotive magazine Autocar in April 2018.

The report said the J-Pace would cost from £80,000 and be on the road by 2021.

It is thought the new J-Pace would share its underpinnings with the Range Rover but be more of a road and performance-focused model.

A model line of SUVs continues to be Jaguar’s biggest growth area and its first - the F-Pace - has proved a hit for a car maker more commonly associated with sports cars and executive saloons.

In its wake Jaguar announced plans for its all-electric I-Pace model which has gone down a storm and won a host of awards.

The marque later launched its smaller E-Pace SUV.

SUVs have marked a radical departure for a marque which produced three saloons - XE, XF and XJ - an estate car (XF) and a sports car (F-Type).

The move follows the industry trend.

Tata Taps Former Renault Chief Bolloré To Put Out Jaguar Land Rover Bonfire

Former Renault chief executive officer Thierry Bolloré will take over at the Tata-owned

Jaguar Land Rover in September.

Bolloré will replace JLR’s 10-year CEO, Sir Ralf Speth, who will take the role of non-

executive Vice-Chairman.

He takes over a JLR in clear crisis, with Land Rover embarrassingly outperforming the

struggling Jaguar brand and both losing money.

Hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic when its sales and market share were declining even in

good trading conditions, JLR has enormous manufacturing overcapacity and a proliferation

of vehicle platforms.

Page 24: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

It has a World Car of the Year award winner in its all-electric Jaguar I-Pace (and the

combustion-powered F-Pace), though Speth pushed back the launch of its second EV, the

flagship XJ limousine, until late 2021.

Its finances have also been overrun by the pandemic, while its self-designed engines

struggle to compete with JLR’s German rivals for noise, vibration, harshness, performance

and economy.

Bolloré will walk in to JLR with his eyes wide open, having already been parachuted into

one of the biggest global industry crises in recent history.

The former Michelin tire head was dropped in to the middle of a boardroom war as CEO on

January 24, 2019, between France’s Renault and Japan’s Nissan in the fallout of the Carlos

Ghosn arrest.

Page 25: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Ghosn had been planning to move Nissan away from its alliance with Renault by formally

folding it into the French automaker’s business when he was arrested on allegations of

financial misconduct.

Close to Ghosn in a company looking past the former kingpin, Bolloré was in an untenable

position and was pushed out on October 11, 2019.

Bolloré is: “an established global business leader with a proven track record of

implementing complex transformations who will bring a wealth of experience to one of the

most revered positions in the industry,” according to Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the

Chairman of JLR’s parent company, Tata.

Page 26: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

By the time Bolloré arrived to clean up the mess at Renault, its share price had fallen from

€98.75 in April, 2018 to €61.16.

It fell further to €53.40 by the time he was pushed out (he called it a “coup”) and has since

sunk to today’s €24.89.

Nissan, meanwhile, has dropped from ¥669 at Bolloré’s departure to ¥424 today.

“It will be my privilege to lead this fantastic company through what continues to be the

most testing time of our generation,” Bolloré said in a statement.

While Bolloré was being pushed out at Renault, JLR was shedding some of its 40,000 jobs

on the way to a pre-tax loss of US$543 million for the financial year that ended on March

31, 2020.

It has just enacted its recovery plan, including securing a US$700 million credit facility with

Chinese lenders when the Covid-19 pandemic lead to an economic crunch.

While Land Rover (apart from the Discovery) and its Range Rover sub-brands are holding

their own against German and Asian rivals, Jaguar hasn’t fared so well.

Jaguar sold just 28,288 cars in the first quarter of the year as its trade plummeted 42.6

percent in the early Covid-19 going.

JLR sold 140,593 Jaguars in the last financial year (down 22 percent) and 368,066 Land

Rovers (down 7.7 percent).

JLR sold more than half a million cars in its last financial year and Speth made moves to

more rapidly electrify its lineup, most of which weighs more than 2000kg.

Jaguar sells the E-Pace, I-Pace and F-Pace soft roaders, the XE and XF sedans (the XJ

flagship also limps on) and the F-Type sports car. All use different architectures.

Land Rover, on the other hand, sells the just-launched Defender replacement, the

Discovery, Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque, Velar, Sport and Vogue models.

Jaguar Land Rover hits Ingenium engine milestone More than 1.5 million of JLR’s Wolverhampton-built engines have been produced, with

new straight-six diesel joining the line-up

Jaguar Land Rover is marking a positive milestone, having now produced more than 1.5 million Ingenium engines at its UK manufacturing plant.

Developed in-house and produced at the

maker’s £1 billion engine manufacturing

facility in Wolverhampton, West Midlands,

the first example of the new engine family

rolled off the line in 2015.

Initially, just one four-cylinder diesel engine

was produced, with a four-cylinder petrol

joining in 2016. Since then, a straight-six petrol has also been produced there, replacing the old

Ford-sourced V6, and a mild-hybrid straight-six diesel was announced earlier this week. Since

the Jaguar I-Pace was launched, the facility has also been assembling electric drive units.

The Wolverhampton site is being adapted to facilitate further electrification and propulsion

methods as well. JLR said it “will continue to develop Ingenium technology, continue to advance

the electrification of its model line-up and establish a concept hydrogen fuel cell powertrain

solution”.

A “growing electrification ecosystem” has already been established by the firm. Located 25 miles

away in Hams Hall, Birmingham, a newly established battery assembly centre makes packs for

both pure-electric and plug-in hybrid models.

JLR has two design and engineering sites, three vehicle manufacturing facilities and two

powertrain assembly plants in the UK. It also has vehicle factories in China, Brazil, India, Austria

and Slovakia. More than 557,000 JLR models were produced globally in 2019.

Jaguar VS Aston Martin: Which Is The True Face Of British Cars?

Aston Martin is the one pushing forward with cars of the future, while Jaguar has to fall back to tried and tested methods of production.

No two car companies represent 'Britishness' more than Jaguar and Aston Martin. The pair has been carrying the Union Jack flag internationally for decades, appearing in film, TV, and music in the process. They seemingly embody all that we would expect from a British car; class, elegance, and speed - all whilst retaining a distinctly retro feel.

Both companies have designed their fair share of iconic models. Aston Martin gave the world the DB5, the DB9, the Vantage, and the Vanquish. Jaguar, meanwhile, is responsible for the XKSS, the F-Type, the E-Type, and the unforgettable XJ220. Take your pick.

With that in mind, the task of crowning one as the face of the British motor industry is certainly not easy or straight forward. But that is just what we're going to try and do.

Jaguar Has Historically Held A Performance Edge

Looking at today's 2020 Jaguar line up, it might be hard to believe that the British manufacturer once produced some of the fastest cars the world has ever seen. The companies motor-racing heyday was throughout the 1950s, but four decades later, they surprisingly came back for more.

The legendary XJ220, introduced to the world in 1992, redefined peoples expectations of Jaguar. The name is slightly misleading, as it maxed out at 212.3 mph, but that still made it the fastest production car in the world - until the McLaren F1's emergence a few years later. This may not have been Jaguar as we knew it, but it put British cars back in map, at a time when Japanese models like the Mazda MX5 threatened to destroy the nation's automotive industry.

Its lifespan and influence were shortlived, but in that limited space of time, it played a crucial role in re-establishing British cars on the world stage.

Page 30: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Jaguar Has Remained Remarkably Consistent

There have undoubtedly been peaks and troughs during the companies 98-year history. But for the vast majority of that time, Jaguar has managed to achieve a remarkable level of consistency in the quality of its car production. They may not always be the fastest available, but they do remain quintessentially stylish, and quintessentially Jaguar.

For the past seven years, the F-Type has been a shining example of this consistency. Always stylish, with each edition being marginally improved under the hood, never deviating away from what made the car successful in the first place. From the mid-1950s through to the modern-day, you'd be hard-pressed to find a Jaguar model that wasn't wildly good-looking.

James Bond Gave Aston Martin A Huge Boost

However, for all that Jaguars may be fast and beautiful, Aston Martin will always be able to hold one thing over their head - James Bond. Since 1965, Aston Martin has been synonymous with the 007 brand, ever since the stunningly gorgeous DB5 rolled onto the big screen. Its success was immediate, and from there, seldom would a Bond film go by without featuring at least one Aston Martin.

In fact, in one of the few recent Jaguar appearances in the film franchise - Die Another Day, the car (an XKR) was being driven by the villain, not the secretive protagonist. Bond has been invaluable to the Aston Martin brand, as for decades now, the franchise has put their cars in front of an international audience. Cars such as the DB5, the DB9 and the Vantage have gone on to attain mythical status in the car and movie world. Its sizable cultural footprint has certainly handed Aston Martin an advantage in terms of worldwide popularity.

Page 31: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Aston Continues To Innovate Aston Martin's legacy is impressive enough, but the company isn't content to sit back and let the future pass it by. Far from resting on their laurels, they seem intent on producing a number of era-defining cars over the coming months and years. The $3 million Aston Martin Valkyrie, with 1160 hp is slated for release soon. As indeed is the Valhalla, a track-specific monster. This may be where Jaguar begins to fall behind somewhat, as of late, their models haven't been bolstered by any great or eye-catching innovations.

Prior to the XJ220, Jaguar was well established as a reputable luxury car company - a worthy British flagbearer on the world stage. But even with such a reputation to fall back on, if you don't continue to push forward and innovate, younger generations will fail to understand why certain brands are held in such high esteem. That then, was the true genius of the XJ220. It reminded everyone of just how great Jaguar could be.

Today, however, the roles are reversed. Aston Martin is the one pushing forward with cars of the future, while Jaguar, perhaps due to financial pressure, has to fall back to tried and tested methods of production. For all that Jags ooze quality, too often they can become ubiquitous, without a style of their own. That's not something you could ever say of Aston Martin, who continues to evolve and try new things.

In my personal opinion, innovation, speed, and cultural impact globally, all add up to Aston being the true face of British cars. The iconic grill on the front of every Aston Martin tells its own story of just how well-known their models are. The same can no longer be said of Jaguar, as sad of a reality as that may be.

Rare Jaguar XJR-S Lynx Eventer Shooting Brake Is A One-Of-One Wagon It's for sale, but it's not exactly cheap.

The Shooting Brake. It’s not quite a station wagon,

but it’s also not a pure sports car, either. By the

classic definition, a Shooting Brake is a low-

profile two-door with cargo space at the back and

more space between the front wheel arches and

door than you have at the rear. This Jaguar XJS fits

the definition to a tee, and if you really want it for

your garage, it’s for sale. Bring lots of cash,

though, because it’s the only one of its kind.

This one-off 1990 Jag is listed at Classic Driver, and it will set you back $186,929. That's considerable coin for

an XJS but it's far more

than just a cool long

roof conversion.

Technically speaking,

it’s an XJR-S Lynx

Eventer, so-named

because the Shooting

Brake conversion was

done by UK-based Lynx

Motor Company. But

it's also a hotter version

of the XJS.

Shooting Brake All The Things:

This vehicle started life as an already-rare Jaguar XJR-S, built with help from Jaguar Sport and Tom Walkinshaw

Racing with a 6.0-liter V12 making upwards of 330 horsepower. According to the listing, this is the only such

XJR-S left-hand-drive pre-facelift shooting brake conversion done. Furthermore, just 63 Eventers were made all

total. So yeah, it’s rare.

Photo Credit: ClassicDriver.com This specific car was driven as a standard XJR-S until 1995 when the conversion was done. At that time, the car’s

black finish was repainted British Racing Green, and of course, it got the extra set of seats in the back that are

said to be deeper than the normal Lynx seat upgrades. The original owner sold the car in 2001, and it was sold

again in 2011 and underwent a restoration in 2016 where it was repainted a third time to the Gun Metal Grey

exterior seen in these photos.

Take a Brief Glance Inside Mike Z.’s Evil Laboratory, The JAGUARAGE With most of us stuck at home,

and not a lot of meeting and driving events going on, I

thought I would give everyone a glimpse at some of the work

currently going on in my back garage.

These are the 2 evil henchmen assisting

me with all my hair-brained ideas;

Bill Armstrong has been restoring and repairing British cars for nearly 60 years.

Johnny Fiedler is a certified mechanic

who specializes in the unusual, which pretty much sums me up….

Page 36: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

So I have had projects going on since December;

1972 XJ6 - Tune up and paint

work 1992 XJS V12 – Replace

thermostats, flush and fill coolant

1966 Rover P5 – Replace brake booster, refresh brake

fluid, and rebuild carburetor and tune up

…and the work goes

on. Needless to say, work to date has piled

up projects, priorities, and parts.

Page 37: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Hey lookit! I have extra

parts!

Looks like I have decreased weight and

made some of my cars lightweights….

There are 2 current projects.

The first involves my newest car, the 1967 420. This one is receiving a fairly

sympathetic restoration, including new front end, oil

pan, rebuilt carbs, cooling system, fuel system, and many electric components..

Page 38: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

Bill and Johnny, not satisfied with rebuilding the 420 front

end, are now looking at the rear end, hoping they can convince me to pull that off

and keep the car off the road for many more months – stay

tuned on that one….

Page 40: Felis Onca...A Letter from the President… Welcome to the email version of our monthly newsletter for August 2020, Felis Onca. As we are all home bound for the most part, I seem to

The other project involved replacing the rear

end on my 1967 420G with a 1992 XJS V12 rear end. This, coupled with an upgraded

tranny, would provide longer legs for freeway driving.

As this project was winding down, we realized the car needed its triple carb setup rebuilt.

Not sure why we are working on the carbs on a

waste bin. Logic tells me perhaps that will help to catch any extra fuel stuck in there.

On the other hand, when have we ever used logic? I think we just ran out of clean workspace.

Who knows.

Hopefully at least on of these cars will be ready to drive or show

before years end.

2020 AGM & IJF Announcements

Hello JCNA Club Presidents,

The JCNA BOD and the Executive Committee have decided to suspend a face-to-face AGM meeting scheduled for August 17 Columbia South Carolina, instead, there will be a phone/virtual conference on August 22, 2020, Saturday, 0800 PDT, dial-in information is forthcoming. Les Hamilton, the Executive Board Members and the Regional Directors thank you all for your understanding and willingness to participate. We are in extraordinary times and we must adapt our usual routines to more responsible and cautious solutions. I know you all will appreciate the efforts that were put into coming to this decision and we hope that you all will participate in the August 22nd phone conference. If you have any questions please send them to: [email protected] or [email protected] Over the past week or so I have been reviewing the status of the 2020 August AGM. Today, after a long discussion and review of the attendees, I have decided that the in-person AGM is not feasible and so is suspended. JCNA will, instead hold a focused "AGM" by video conference call starting at 8am (PDT), Saturday, August 22nd. The video "AGM" will be focused on the most important matters. Committee status reports will be available on the JCNA Web site. Critical motions that require Club vote will be voted on by a roll-call vote and will be advisory until ratification at the next in-person AGM. My reasons for making this decision are: 1. While we could have likely mustered a quorum for the AGM using a small number of in-person attendees and delegate proxies, overall in-person participation would have been significantly reduced and the quality of the business meeting would have been greatly diminished even with the addition of video broadcast. 2. With the extraordinary precautions that are being taken by the venues, the meeting would have been as safe as most other public spaces, but the travel to and from the event is likely not as safe and the last thing that JCNA wants to do, is put our members at increased risk of infection. 3. We cannot depend on the administrations not reversing the rules on travel, meeting sizes, and business openings in the next 45 days. 4. There is the risk that insurance carriers will exclude coverage for any COVID-19 litigation. I find the decision very regretful given the great amount of planning and preparation work expended by Rob Thuss with the JSSC members and George with the Coventry Foundation. I was greatly looking forward to seeing each of you, Columbia, and the Coventry Foundation. If you have registered for the event your registration fees will be refunded. If you have any hotel reservations or airline reservations please contact the hotel/airline directly for a refund of your deposit or credit for your flights. Also today, the 2020 IJF Board met and recommended delaying the Fort Meyers IJF until 2021. I agree with their recommendation. 2020 is proving to be a very different and challenging year in many ways. If you have any questions or comments please let me know at [email protected] Thanks for your support and I hope that you and your members stay safe. ---les--- Les Hamilton JCNA, President 2019-2021

To Our Concours Community,

After a long period of consideration with our planning committee, event production team, and City

officials, we must prioritize the safety and health of all our attendees, entrants, sponsors, vendors, staff

and volunteers. With the uncertainty over how the virus will be impacting life this coming Fall, it is with

a heavy heart that we must formally announce that the 16th Annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance,

currently scheduled for September 2020, will be moved to April 16-18, 2021.

The excellent reputation of the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance is not something we will sacrifice, and

with little certainty on the timeline for the lifting of public health restrictions that would allow this large

gathering to safely take place during 2020, we have decided to prioritize and focus our efforts on the

April 2021 event. You can expect the same spectacular display of the world’s finest automotive art

spotlighting the Bugatti marque, dazzling VIP spectacles with luminous décor, energetic entertainment,

luscious flavors, and the same breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean as it meets the shores of La Jolla.

Our fundraising efforts continue, and we encourage our supporters to donate at this

link https://lajollahistory.org/support/donating/. Each year, the net proceeds from the La Jolla Concours

d’Elegance supports the La Jolla Historical Society’s mission to preserve the rich history of La Jolla

through exhibitions, educational programs, architecture tours, youth education, and annual community

events.

We appreciate the hard work of our committee and volunteers who donate their time, and the enthusiasm

of the car owners and many sponsors and vendors that support our event. When we meet again on the

coastal shores of La Jolla to celebrate automotive excellence, you will find an amplified version of the

signature event you have come to know and love. In the meantime, we thank you for your support and

understanding, and we wish you safety and good health always.

Sincerely,

La Jolla Concours Team

Chairman G. Michael Dorvillier

Request for Qualified Jaguar Restoration Mechanics Dear SW Region Presidents/members,

I recently have had conversations with several Jaguar Restoration Businesses on the West Coast and it seems there is a shortage of qualified Jaguar Restoration Mechanics on the Western Side of the Rockies. I know most of you are active members of your Jaguar Community and hear from your members who are a good shop and mechanic.

The most current request for a Jaguar Restoration Mechanic comes from a well-estabished business in California, specifically the Central California coast.

If you or any of your members can send me recommendations and contact information of qualified technicians, I would greatly appreciate it

We need to support our restoration businesses who keep our Jaguar Heritage alive, we need to keep those technicians busy restoring and maintaining our classic Jags!

Cheers and Thanks for your help,
