Rule BritanniaThe Judge, the General & the Ultimate “Letter of Comfort. British Military Impunity in the 1970’s”The principle that “No-one Is Above the Law” is the most basic protection we have. Yet during the conflict in Northern Ireland, British soldiers who killed or wounded people had a corrupt “get out of jail free” card. Previously secret documents unearthed in London by the Pat finucane centre show the cosiest of relationships between the British Army and the Attorney General. They also show London cynically cheated both bereaved families and the injured out of justified compensation.

Creggan: The SequelIn 1979 Irish journalist Mary Holland and film maker Michael White produced a seminal documentary examining the impact of ten years of conflict on the residents of the Creggan estate. Despite being banned, the film won the Prix D’Italia film award. 35 years later Féile is proud to launch a sequel to the documentary which revisits the making of the film through the eyes of surviving participant Mary Nelis and the relatives of others who were filmed. It also explores how the estate has changed over the last 35 years as a result of developments such as the peace process and the Saville inquiry.

The Republican Congress

Feile heritage day is where locals and visitors have the chance to access three of the city’s most popular attractions for free.

Visit ARas Colmcille within the grounds of the Long Tower church. Spread over three floors within a category B2 listed building – affectionately known as “The Wee Nun’s School” – a bespoke audio-visual interactive visitor experience tells the story our our City’s founding father and patron saint.

Move onto the Siege Heroes museum at Bishop St to hear about the seminal siege of the walled city in 1689 and the fight for survival of both the inhabitants and besiegers.

Then move to the Museum of Free Derry to learn about the struggle for civil rights and the Story of Bloody Sunday including the Saville Enquiry which affirmed the innocence of those killed and injured on that fateful day in January 1972.

Finally onto The Heritage Tower in The Fountain which contains a private collection of artefacts and memo-rabilia from various periods of history, with particular attention paid to the military and the loyal orders. The Heritage Tower was once the prison home to famous Irish leaders, Wolfe Tone and De Valera.

The Republican Congress of 1934 was led by IRA veterans including Peadar O’Donnell, Frank Ryan and George Gilmore. It was a socialist organisation and was dedicated to a workers’ republic in Ireland. 80 years on, is The Republican Congress a relevant or redundant concept? Speakers include Tommy McKearney, author of The Provisional IRA-From Insurrection to Government and Eoin O Bruin, author of Sinn Fein and The Politics of The Left.
