Becky Carter knows one true fact. Volunteers are the backbone and strength of Lake Cares Food Pantry.

“As Assistant Director of Lake Cares one of the pleasures of my job is gathering people from all walks of life wanting to volunteer and help those in need,” Becky said. “We have approximately 170+active volunteers and you couldn’t ask for a finer group of people. From My Desk

Saturday May 6th, 2017 was the opening of the Lake Cares mobile distribution site in Tavares. We have partnered with the Faith Christian Fellowship Church to serve those in need the first Saturday every month and it was very successful with the help from a lot of volunteers.

But as we open one pantry another food pantry closes. The town of Paisley has lost the support of a food pantry and this town is called a “Food Desert”. There are no supermarkets in the town so people need to drive to either Deland or Umatilla to purchase food or in case of emergency they go to the local Dollar store. This is heartbreaking since it is one of the poorest towns in Lake County. We are currently working with the county on using their community center as a food distribution point and there is a possibility

that our fourth mobile site could open up within the next few months. This is only possible because of the wonderful support we get from the community.

There are children going door to door collecting from neighbors, businesses doing drives and committing to monthly pledges and individuals ringing our back door and handing us a check. Richard and Tony are men that go shopping each month and take advantage of “buy one get one free” at the grocery stores and donate over 600 pounds of food each month! All of this support is so humbling.

For more than 3 years First United Methodist Church of Mount Dora has partnered with Lake Cares Food Pantry distributing food on the 1st & 3rd Friday

of the month to Pantry clients living near the Martin Luther King Center in Mount Dora. The majority have no means of transportation. Many of the families and seniors walk to get the much needed food.

“This really is an answer to the prayers of this community and our church,” said Janet Westlake from First United. “Dave Magee, who passed away in 2016, started this outreach program aiding those in need of food. We service 120 families each month and it’s really about relationships.”

Relationships start with the Pantry providing the food, the city who unlocks the door on distribution days at the MLK Center and clients themselves setting up tables and chairs.

“Our clients love helping us,” said Janet. “They feel like they are giving back and they often help with paperwork when we get busy. They feel like they themselves are helping make a difference.”
