FEDERAL switches are the most versatile available.Besides testing to AS3133, FEDERAL switcheshave been tested to EN60947-3, providing severalspecialist ratings specific to certain applications.This means that a FEDERAL switch can bematched directly and accurately to an application,providing confidence to specifiers and end-users.All FEDERAL one-way switches are SwitchDisconnectors, meaning they are suitable for useas isolating switches.

Besides ensuring versatility, the vigorous testingregime undertaken by FEDERAL switches istestament to the superior quality of the productoffer. This superiority translates to less equipmentdowntime and improved safety in the workplace,both issues of great importance to businessmanagers and their technical experts.

The same high-performance switches used inFEDERAL are also used in all ROWCO switchedsocket outlets.

Built to Last

The FEDERAL & ROWCO range uses diecastaluminium exteriors that offer excellent impactresistance, ensuring long product life, indoors oroutdoors. The materials used are proven tooperate in extreme temperatures from –20oC to+60oC ambient.

Switch status information is cast onto product toensure it is visible even in the harshest ofconditions.

IP Rating

FEDERAL & ROWCO products are rated to IP66.FEDERAL & ROWCO synthetic gaskets providehigh performance protection in all situations forpeace of mind.

Modular Design

Based upon 3 frame sizes, the FEDERAL &ROWCO range has been designed as a family ofproducts, allowing interchangeability. This meansthat junction / utility boxes can be mounted andwith only a cover change, can be turned into aswitch or switched socket outlet.

Safety in action

ROWCO switched socket outlets have beendesigned for safety. All single phase productsfeature double pole switching and all three phaseproducts feature an interlock mechanism betweenswitch and socket. This prevents the insertion orwithdrawal of plugtops when the switch is in theON position.

All switches can be padlocked off in two locations.Each of these two padlock positions can accept an8mm hasp padlock or a scissor lockout tag. Thisfeature supports important occupational healthand safety procedures employed throughoutindustry.

Easy installation

FEDERAL and ROWCO products were designedwith installers in mind. All products can bemounted using internal or external options,depending on what the application requires. Thisflexibility extends to the earthing point - these canbe relocated within the enclosure to suit on-siterequirements.

All larger switches in the FEDERAL range are basemounted, in recognition of the large cable sizesused in these applications. Through this wesupport simpler and faster installation.

All products are supplied with stainless steel coverscrews. These screws offer excellent non-corrosive properties and are treated to preventchemical reaction with the aluminium castings.These cover screws are standard metric thread, soalternatives can be easily arranged should the needarise.

All conduit entry points and rear cut-out guides aremetric for familiarity and ease of use.

The new small frame size MATRIX plugtopsboast an M20 rear thread and standardexternal components, allowing cableconnection flexibility and simplifiedmaintenance.

AS3947-3 AC3 - Switching of squirrel cage motors.

AC3 has no A or B classification for frequency of operation and all ratings are for frequent operation, as described above. AC3provides ratings directly applicable to the direct starting and switching off of motors during operation and as such is one of theharshest switch ratings available for motors.

The AC3 rating of an WR350M switch is 28 Amps (15kW). This switch can be used to start or stop a motor that has a full loadcurrent of up to 28 Amps.

AC3 is the rating best suited for control equipment being turned on or off directly under load. Examples include conveyors, lathesand process equipment. With a frequent operation classification, these switches may be operated many times per hour.

AS3947-3 AC23A - Switching of motor or other highly inductive loads.

As above, this rating covers AC supply and frequent operation. AC23A is the best utilisation category for switching of mostcommon types of motors. Most other highly inductive loads typically involve motors of some type. Examples are heat pumps,compressors and air conditioners.

The AC23A rating of an MSW350WH switch is 35 Amps (18.5kW). This switch can be matched to a motor that has a full loadcurrent of up to 35 Amps.

Generally these switches are used in conjunction with other motor control equipment such as motorstarters or soft starters and onlyhave to operate during a fault or period of isolation.

This rating covers the switch control of electromagnetic loads, including control devices such as relays, contactors and valves.

AS3947-3 DC21A - Switching of DC Resistive loads.

As for AC21A except covers DC applications.

AS3947-3 Rated short time withstand current (Icw / kA).

This is the recommended maximum current the switch can withstand under fault conditions without failing or showing signs ofdamage and is the switch equivalent of a 4.5kA or 6kA rating assigned to an MCB. Values are expressed as kA.

An WR350M switch has a 1.5kA rating so it can carry a 1500 Amp load for 1 second without damage.

AS3947-3 requires performance of at least 12x rated current for 1 second. Federal switches offer performance levels muchhigher than this.

AS3947-3 Rated short circuit making capacity (Icm / kAp).

This rating provides performance information relating to the presence of a short circuit condition when the switch is switched ON.Values are given as kAp and indicate what current load can be carried until circuit protection devices activate.

An WR350M switch has a 2.1kAp rating so it can switch ON a 2100 Amp prospective short circuit and carry it for as long as theprinciple protection devices (MCB or Fuses) take to operate.

A "Rated short circuit breaking capacity" relates to the opposite - switching OFF in the presence of a short circuit condition.This rating is not typically published as circuit protection devices are designed to act before a manual switch operation can beundertaken.

Uninterrupted Duty

A duty without any off-load period in which the main contacts of an equipment remain closed, whilst carrying a steady current without interruption for periods of more than eight hours (weeks, months, or even years).

AS3133 M Motor Rating

M rating indicates the Switch is suitable for control of motors with a nominated locked rotor current of XX amps - MXX.

An WR350M switch has an M200 rating so it can switch ON or OFF under locked rotor conditions a Motor with a 200 Amp lockedrotor current. The locked rotor current is generally 8 to 10 times the full load current and simulates current draw when a motor isstalled.

AS3133 Resistive rating

This rating is typically the one quoted most widely for a particular switch. The rating relates to resistive loads with a moderateinductive element.

An WR350M switch has a 50 Amp resistive rating so it can switch ON and OFF a resistive load of 50 Amps.
