More and more of our patrons are being exploited by unscrupulous ticket resellers. Oftentimes our tickets are being marketed on secondary ticket sites before the operator of the site has even purchased tickets – and they are being sold at prices far above the price you will pay by purchasing your tickets through Wharton Center.

If you purchase tickets from another source, you might pay too much for your tickets, or may even pay for invalid tickets. You also may not be able to get help from Wharton Center’s ticketing staff if you have a problem; there will be no in-house record of your transaction, and we cannot contact you if there is a change of performance time, traffic notices, or to provide any other special information.

This past year she played Clara in the Pace production of The Light in the Piazza directed by Victoria Clark. Other Pace credits include The Visit (Annie, dir. John Doyle). ASHLEY BROWN (The Mother Abbess) originated the title role in Broadway’s Mary Poppins (Outer Critics, Drama League and Drama Desk nominations for best actress). Other Broadway credits include Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Ms. Brown received critical acclaim for her star turns in the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s productions of Show Boat and Oklahoma!. She has performed with virtually all of the top orchestras in North America including the Boston Pops, New York Pops, New York Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl, Philadelphia

Orchestra, etc. Ms. Brown has performed her Telly Award-winning PBS show at The Kennedy Center, Birdland and Feinstein’s at the Regency, and is the voice of Disneyland (celebrating its 60th anniversary), singing the newly penned Richard Sherman song, “A Kiss Goodnight.” Ms. Brown is a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music and Lyrics). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theatre. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece, Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). Oklahoma!, the fi rst Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the fi rst of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ musical comedy style with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta. HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE (Book). The Lindsay and Crouse partnership stands today as the longest collaboration of any writers in theatrical history, lasting for 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at nineteen and went on to become a successful Broadway playwright and director. Russel Crouse was born in 1893 and died in 1966. After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his fi rst renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his fi rst Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on, Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the long-running play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize winning State of the Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for the Lunts. Their producing credits included The Hasty Heart, Detective Story and Arsenic and Old Lace.

R O B E R T R U S S E L L B E N N E T T (Orchestrations). In a career spanning more than fi ve decades, Robert Russell Bennett (1894-1981) arranged more than 300 Broadway musical scores; in musical comedy’s golden era of the ‘20’s, he orchestrated up to twenty-two shows a season.

Among his credits were Show Boat, Robert, Sunny, Rose Marie, No, No, Nanette, Girl Crazy, Of Thee I Sing, Face The Music, Carmen Jones, Finian’s Rainbow, Kiss Me, Kate, My Fair Lady and Camelot. He orchestrated seven of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musicals, including Oklahoma!, South Pacifi c, The King and I and The Sound of Music; his arrangements for the 1955 fi lm version of Oklahoma! earned him an Academy Award. He also orchestrated and arranged Rodgers’ thirteen-hour television documentary score for Victory At Sea. A classically trained composer, Bennett’s prolifi c output of original compositions includes symphonies, sonatas, a ballet, a concerto and an opera. He is the posthumous recipient of a 2008 Special Tony Award in recognition of his historic contribution to American musical theatre.

Inner Circle is Wharton Center’s volunteer organization which supports the performing arts and offers members an opportunity to enhance their knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment

of the arts. Through membership dues, volunteer activities and educational outreach, members help sustain the performing arts in our community.

Endowments provide a foundation of stability and support. Gifts to endowments are made with the understanding that the principal is continually preserved and the total amount of the gift is invested. Each year, only a portion of the interest earned is spent while the remainder reverts to principal. In this respect, an endowment is a perpetual gift.
