Join the Lawn Care Ministry!

Dear church family,

I have decided to end my leadership of the lawn care ministry and being a team member.

After, I am not sure how many years, it is time to move into other areas of service. I

remember when we started, some at the church were a little skeptical about a completely

volunteer group taking on this task. I think it turned out O.K. I would like to thank all of

those volunteers who helped over the years to keep the church lawn looking good and

well-manicured. We have been able to save the church thousands of dollars over the years

of which I am proud.

Now for this to continue, someone will have to step up and take the lead. Trust me, it does

not happen on its own! So if you say; boy I would like to see this continue, how about you

taking the lead?

Thanks,

Mart Hooper

“I’ve Got This!”

(Exodus 20:1-7)

(Deuteronomy 30:11-20)

What “idols” keep God from being in first

place in each area of my life?

FEBRUARY 9

“My Outcome Level”

(Deuteronomy 28:1-14)

God gifts me with work. Why do I work?

Personal income or Kingdom outcome?

FEBRUARY 16

“All I Can”

(Mark 6:30-44)

What happens when I “earn all I can; save

all I can; and give all I can?”

FEBRUARY 23

“Why I Give”

(Acts 5:1-11)

Do I give in order to impress God, impress

others, or from a heart filled with gratitude?

Who is # 1?

Being number 1 is a big deal. In the Winter

Olympics this month each event will have a

gold medalist. That person or team will be

proclaimed the best in the world. The best

skater. The best skier. The best sledder.

This Sunday we will crown a Super Bowl

champion. They will be proclaimed “the best,”

the number 1 team. Grammy Awards were

given out this past Sunday evening

proclaiming “the best,” the number 1 artists.

Except in very rare instances each category or

discipline has room for only one number 1.

This is not a shared award. All other

participants finish second, third, fourth, etc.

The same is true in my life. It is very

important for me to determine who and what

have the position as number 1.

Our stewardship emphasis this month will

invite us to examine our priorities to make

sure God is first in our living and our giving.

I hope you have picked up your devotional

book by Mike Slaughter, and will take the

time to read the daily thoughts. The sermons

outlined to the left build on our theme:

1. Making sure God is number 1.

2. Remembering I work for God’s kingdom.

3. Remembering God provides for me.

4. Responding to God with thanksgiving.

May God richly bless us as we position Him

number 1 in our lives.

Several years ago, Mart Hooper saw a

need to organize a lawn care ministry

for our church. Under Mart’s

leadership, this ministry has been a

huge success and has not only provided

an opportunity for individuals to use

their gifts and resources in service for

God, but has also saved the church the

expense of hiring an outside lawn

service.

Mart has decided to pursue different

ministry opportunities and will no longer

be leading the Lawn Care Ministry.

Many thanks go out to Mart for

stepping up, and leading!

Family Life Ministry

WINNERS

What a terrific turn out for our first Family Life Ministry Chili

Cook-Off. There were 12 delicious entries of chili for our

judges to pick a winner. After careful tasting of each chili, the

judges determined the winning pot of chili to have been entered

by Stacie, Zak and Darren Nix. Congratulations to the Nix

family. As part of their winnings, their chili will have the option

to represent First United Methodist Church at the Rusk County

Electric Cooperative’s annual chili cook-off on April 10, held at

the Rusk Co Expo.

Also, as part of the fun evening, everyone who attended could

sample as much of the chili as they wanted. This led us to a

“People’s Choice” award winner being selected. The chili

connoisseurs chose the Men’s Sunday School Class as this year’s

favorite. Thanks to Buzz Fullen and his team for their entry.

A huge thank you to all the entries and sharing of their culinary

expertise. Thanks also to all of those who showed up to help

make this family ministries event a success !

Congratulations! Stacie, Zak and Darren Nix

Music Notes I would like to introduce you all to the members of three committees that will be helping me in

the administering of the music and arts program. Each of these committees will help me in

planning for events during the coming months.

Traditional Worship Service Committee: Barbara Brown, Ouida Henson, Sharla Worthington,

Buddy Dawson, Debbie Mann, and Jimmy Sanders.

Common Ground Worship Committee: Jon Johnston, Margaret Moseley, Barbara Hale, Stacie

Nix, Chris Rhudy, and David Keeling.

Arts Council: Ouida Henson, Phyllis Alford, Tes Bonner, Zulynne Leverett, Jean Ferraro, Kay

Nan Duran, Nancy Preston, and Ann Harris.

If you have suggestions on how to make our worship services more dynamic, please pass these

on to me or to the folks on the respective committee. These committees are my “ears” in the

congregation, so feel free to let them know of your interests and/or concerns.

Also...the Chancel Choir is now meeting for rehearsals on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to

7:30 pm. This generous gesture of support by the Chancel Choir is allowing us to have a more

dynamic children’s choir program on Wednesday evenings.

Calling all bell ringers! We want to get as many bell choirs up and ringing as possible. If you

have experience in ringing then you are just who we’re looking for. If you have no experience,

but do have a desire to learn then you are just what we’re looking for as well.

Bells are a fun way to relax...you really do not have any time to spend on worrying about

anything else. Please consider becoming a part of a bell choir. You’ll thank yourself!!

Grace to you all…….Jack

Our next Library Lunch discussion

will be on The Hiding Place, by

Corrie Ten Boom. Yes, it’s an old

book that many of us have read; but

it should provoke a good discussion.

As the book cover describes the story:

Here is a book aglow with the glory of God and

the courage of a quiet Christian spinster whose

life was transformed by it. A story of Christ’s

message and the courageous woman who listened

and lived to pass it along—with joy and triumph!

Let’s tentatively set the date for Tuesday, March

11, at noon.

As always, books will be available at the library

for checkout and/or purchase. I hope that you will

make plans to join the discussion.

First United Methodist Church

Staff and Members:

I would like to thank you on

behalf of the 52 children and

their families that you so

graciously helped during the Holiday season

this year. Working with these students and their

families on a daily basis and knowing the

struggles they go through to put enough food on

the table and sufficient clothing on their

children, I can assure you that your kindness has

touched lives in a way that these families will

never forget. My only wish is that you could be

here to witness first-hand the smiles and

excitement on the faces of the children here at

school as they share what “Santa brought for

Christmas”. Thank you for sharing the joy of

Christmas with so many, and God Bless you for

making a positive difference in the life of a

child.

Very Sincerely,
