LWML (Lutheran Women Missionary League)

The topic for February 2018 Circle meeting is in the Winter Quarterly on Page 18, entitled "Living a God-Sized Dream" authored by Christine Scheele Weerts, a fourth generation Lutheran, is a member of the LWML at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Prattville AL. She has a Master's Degree in Religion from Concordia University, Chicago and is the author of The June 2018 Portals of Prayer Devotions, published by CPH. No Leaders Guide is available at this time; however, helpful

information is found on pages 4 and 6 in this issue. The 2016 Quarterly carried a small article as well as our Newsletter in 2016 under the heading "Sisters In Christ". What a wonderful "Sister In Christ" Rosa was in her time – how about us today – can we follow in her footsteps? Roll call word “Prayer” Alpha Circle will meet Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the home of Martha Clemons with Darsa Clay as her co-hostess. Topic will be led by Wanda Thurnau. Denise Benavides will check the Acolyte Robes for laundering or mending needs. For more information, please call the President of Alpha Circle, Wanda Thurnau at 816-524-8099. Lydia Circle will meet Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 1:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall, with Darla Wolters and Sheila Dalen hosting the meeting. Topic will be led by Joyce Shropshire. For more information, please call the President of Lydia Circle, Kathleen Jarvis at 816-763-2894.

"Living as God's People" - 2018 LWML Prayer Service, written by 2013-2017 LWML Pastoral Counselor Rev. Dr. Robert Roegner, is based on 1 Peter 2:9-12, God's People – Many factors come to mind when we think of who we are – our identity. In his first letter, Peter continually reminds his readers of their identity. Rather than focus on inane worldly details, he zeros in on what's most important – Our standing in the eyes of God or our place in His kingdom. Pastor Bob, as he is sometimes known, hails from the English District where he has served as LWML District Pastoral Counselor. He and his wife, Kristi, are blessed with four children and five grandchildren. In his 35 years of serving the LCMS in a mission capacity, Rev. Roegner has traveled to 89 countries. He and Kristi will be serving in new mission work in Israel with "Apple of His Eye Ministry".

"Mission" - and once again, as the New Year unfolds in front of us, Alpha Circle will be focusing on Mission – reaching out with items and funds needed for our Grow In Peace Child Care. We would appreciate our congregation's help in this mission endeavor. As before, the items needed will be listed on the poster atop the stairs.

"Eye Glasses" - another request has been brought to our attention – Eye Glasses and perscription sun glasses are greatly needed. If anyone is willing to part with their old glasses, please bring them to the church and place them on the ledge upstairs.

Book Club The Radium Girls by Kate Moore

The Curies' newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the

nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From

body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark

years of the First World War.

Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories.

The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like

industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" are the luckiest alive

— until they begin to fall mysteriously ill.

But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side

effects, and the women's cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave

shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America's early 20th century, and in a

groundbreaking battle for workers' rights that will echo for centuries to come.

Written with a sparkling voice and breakneck pace, The Radium Girls fully illuminates the inspiring young

women exposed to the "wonder" substance of radium, and their awe-inspiring strength in the face of almost

impossible circumstances. Their courage and tenacity led to life-changing regulations, research into nuclear

bombing, and ultimately saved hundreds of thousands of lives...

Sewing Bee

The ladies went back to sewing again on January 2nd, a week later than planned due to the snow and cold weather. They plan to meet every Monday in February, weather permitting. We meet in the Fellowship Hall about 9:30am. Bring a sack lunch and stay into the afternoon. We will begin making quilts to give away next December. Please join us even if you can't come every week.

After sending in 1,000 Best Choice UPC's in December we received a check for $60 which goes into our Special Mission Fund that is used to buy supplies for making quilts. A special thanks to everyone who has contributed money or supplies during the year.

SAVE, SAVE, SAVE

Please continue saving the Best Choice UPC's. They are on many products sold at Price Chopper, Apple Market and Hen House. Also save "Box Tops for Education" that are on many products. Save your cancelled postage stamps, especially commutative and foreign stamps. Do not save the Christmas or Forever stamps. Containers for these are on the shelf in the Narthex.

Are you a Thrivent Financial Member with Thrivent Choice Dollars available?

Members become eligible for Choice Dollars based on insurance premiums, contract values, and Thrivent

volunteer leadership. Eligible members are designated Choice Dollars that they can direct to enrolled

charities. Peace Lutheran Church is one of those charities. If you designate your dollars to go to Peace

you can inform Mark Harms, our treasurer, if you wish those dollars to go toward a specific ministry or purpose. For example: fellowship hall up-date, maintenance fund, Grow in Peace, etc.

Thank you for the dollars that have been given to Peace over the years! Each dollar makes a difference.
