When you read these words, when you hear yourself say them aloud… what comes to mind?

In truth, I’ve been accused of being radical a time or two. The thing is, I think those accusing me thought I would be offended some how… ready to defend myself against such accusations. In reality, I was so humbled that they would call me such a wonderful thing. RADICAL. Jesus was a radical; Jesus DARED GREATLY and broke through the boundaries that attempted to create division and pain. That I should be called a radical too, I’m truly hum-bled. Yes friends, we ARE called to be radical… to extend RADI-CAL HOSPITALTITY. Join me and learn what this looks like, sounds like, feels like at: RENEW! 2018, The Dance of Radical Hospitality! We will focus on being radically hospitable to our global brothers and sisters we find right here in our little corner of Minnesota. Come hear stories of radical hospitality, and engage in conversation about how you can welcome the other in your congregation and community.

Greetings in the name of Christ, Sometimes the irony of our calendars helps us reconsider how our different ways of keeping time intersect. You’ve likely noticed that in 2018, Ash Wednesday falls on Feb. 14. I’ve already seen some Face-

book chatter about what a downer this is. How can we feast on chocolate hearts and go out to Valentine’s Day dinner while also being reminded that we are dust and to dust we shall return? Yet is not that cross a symbol of love, a sign of our baptism as beloved children of God? Can we use the opportunity to talk about the new hearts created in us, hearts turned toward telling the truth of the limits of human love and relationships? Then, as the season of Lent comes to a close, we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord on April Fool’s Day (April 1). Though not a public holiday laden with the commercial and cultural weight of Valentine’s Day, it’s still a bit ironic that Jesus surprises us on this day associated with foolishness. What we think is foolishness is indeed the greatest wisdom of all: Christ’s life springing from death; Christ’s undying love abounding for the whole creation. We are likely filling up our calendars for this calendar year. As we do so, let us remember that God’s time is not our time, that the gift of the liturgical year is to root us in kairos, biblical time, rather than chronos, or clock time. In “A Three-Year Banquet,” Gail Ramshaw reminds us that “as Christians, we hold to the counter-cultural idea that our years, like our lives, revolve around the mystery of Christ and find joy in the Spirit their most profound significance. Each week begins in the joy of the resurrection. Each year is re-newed by Christ at Easter” (Minneapolis: Augsburg Fortress, 2004). By: Jennifer Baker, ELCA Worship News

Faith Education Ministry (All Ages) Christian Education (PreK-Grade 4) Our Christian Education ministry continues to experience God’s love as we move from Celebration Station to Creation Station to Imagination Station to Conversation Station. Lots of hand-on-learning happening! Our kids have also been experiencing something that we haven’t had for quite some time… our Faith All Youth Choir! We work on a new song every month in Celebration Station and then offer God our gift of song at worship once a month. In February, we will be offering up Every Move I Make on Sunday, February 11th at the 10am worship service. BEWARE: there will be A LOT of movin’ goin’ on… JUST SAYING!

Confirmation Preparation (Grades 5-6) Our Confirmation Preparation class has undergone some changes since Christmas. This is a brand new course and with that comes a lot of monitoring and adjusting. Pastor Lisa and Jason Kozisek (and Kris Dragich as a super sub!) began facilitating this course that is based on Luther’s Small Catechism. Since Christmas, we have added 2 more small group leaders: Kevin Peterson and Jordan Lee. With thirty 5-6 grades, this is working a whole lot better! You may have noticed a new ‘portable’ classroom in the education hall. We are busting at the seams and needed (and still need) more classrooms. We have placed a curtain at the end of the hall that we close to create another classroom. We are really having to think creatively as God is blessings us with so many young disciples! Our 5th and 6th graders will also be ‘bustin’ some moves’ on February 11th as they join in the singing.

Confirmation (Grades 7-8) Our Confirmation ministry has been tackling some really tough questions so far this year surrounding the Bible: 1. Who wrote the Bible, God or humans? 2. Is the Bible true? 3. Why does the Bible contradict itself at times? 4. Is the New testament more important than the Old Testament? 5. Why are there so many versions of the Bible? And surrounding the Creed: 1. Can it be proven that God exists? 2. Is God male? 3. How can God be “three-in-one?” 4. Am I really supposed to believe Mary was a virgin? We will continue asking and discussing these tough questions as well as questions surrounding discipleship. Our Confirmation Students have been doing a FANTASTIC job being “Choir Buddies” to our youngest choir members. We have pretty amazing role models in our middle school kids. They will also be bringing on the moves February 11th.

Our Confirmation students will be looking for mentors for the Lenten season. Please consider this awesome opportunity to connect with one of these kids. If interested, contact Pastor Barb.

High School Bible Study (Grades 9-12) Our High School BS ministry has taken to the ‘big screen’! We are currently viewing and studying the movie The Shack. We are utilizing an accompanying bible study. The past weeks we’ve been discussing the feeling of being abandoned by God and to whom or to where do we run for refuge when life overwhelms. We’ve had blessed conversations and we praise God for that. All high school students are welcome to join us from 7-8:30pm on Wednesdays. Be looking for many of our high school students participating in our Lenten drama series on Wednesday evening.

Mid Winter Bible Study

The Book of Jonah: Are you running from God?

Jonah tried. His story is a short, bizarre, powerful

tale showing us that we can never outrun the grace

of God. That is good news! In this class we will

dive into (no pun intended) this Old Testament

book and incorporate the viewing of the Sight and

Sound Theater’s production of Jonah.
