And into February!

Though February is the shortest month of the year, it is a busy one both nationally — we celebrate National Freedom Day, Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day,

and President’s Day — and here in Sarasota.

The Fine Arts Society will celebrate Presidents’ Day at our February 15th general meeting. We will be recognizing our Past Presidents who are still members, including: Carol Kopeck, Judy Fiala, Martie Lieberman, Joan Endrizzi, Nancy Stukenberg, Alice Allen, Ellie Schweigaard-Olsen, Kathleen France, Nancy Andrews, and Carol Crosby. You may find the complete list of all Past Presidents on Page 2 of the current Yearbook.

In our general meeting on February 15th, we will feature “The Chalk Festival” with a presentation by Denise Kowal, Founder/Director. A free spirit, Denise has had a lifetime of exciting adventures that many of us can only dream of! We can look forward to an active and colorful presentation.

Last summer, the interior of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall was redecorated, and some of our collection has been moved around a bit. All members are encouraged to attend the docent-led tour of our re-installed Permanent Art Collection on February 6 at 10:00am — which is complimentary with your Fine Arts name badge. This is an especially good opportunity for all our new members to be introduced to our collection. I hope that all members check out how the paintings look in their new settings. Remember that you can bring your friends to one of our tours, as well. We also set up private tours from time to time.

On February 20, an education event will take place at the Ringling College of Art and Design. We will have a private tour of the Basch Gallery led by Barbara Basch. We will also have a tour of two new buildings: the Goldstein Library and the Basch Visual Arts Center. Both are praised for their cutting-edge architectural designs.

Later in the month, we will have yet another Creators & Collectors Salon: “Sculpture, Savories, and Sunset”, hosted by sculptor Robert Wilk in his Golden Gate condo. This has been a tremendously popular Salon! Since his condo can only accommodate 20 guests, Robert has generously agreed to host this Salon twice. The dates are February 21 and February 24. There are currently wait lists for both. What a busy and exciting month we have in store -- I look forward to seeing you all soon! Enjoy!

My calling is music! I didn’t know it when I was handed my first flute in 4th grade, sang at my Gramma’s memorial, not even when I went through Crane Department of Music at State University of New York at Potsdam.

It can enrich our lives in so many ways, including teaching music appreciation to adults, imparting our culture by singing with elementary students, or directing a church choir.

Singing in the Asolo Opera Chorus, I saw it build into the Apprentice program; I played and worked for the original orchestra that has grown into the Venice Symphony, and helped start and continue to serve on the Board of the Gulf Coast Community Chorus.

For many years I enjoyed being in a Flute and Harp Duo specializing in convention entertainment. I have played at gallery openings, beach weddings, baby showers, banquets, and churches. But some of my sweetest memories are of just playing or singing with the many friends that music has brought into my life and for that I am truly grateful.

Fine ArtsScholarships! In 2017, we honored 19 Fine Arts Scholars, supporting their college studies in the Arts. For these students, the increasing costs of a college education in the Arts make our Fine Arts Scholarships even more important.

Please consider giving an additional donation to our Scholarship Fund. You may wish to sponsor an individual scholarship for a donation of $1,000 or more, as many members have done already through Metamorphosis. Or, you may wish to donate a memorium for a dear friend or relative. We are happy to receive donations in any amount!

Make the check payable to FASS and indicate the check is for Scholarship. Your support will make a tremendous difference in our scholarship students’ success!

Please mail a check to Alice Allen at our Fine Arts address: PO Box 1432, Sarasota, FL 34230.

UPDATE! Creators & Collectors Salonsby Donna Maytham

Yes, there are Wait Lists for Salons!

Do let us know if your plans have changed! There are now wait lists for each of the upcoming Salons.

We urge Fine Arts members who have already registered to attend Salons Six through Ten to check your calendars. If your schedule has changed, please contact Norman Meunier at [email protected]. He maintains the wait lists and can offer your place to another member.

Liz Trostli, Norman and I hope you are enjoying the Salons as much as we are. At every event we make new friends and learn how many amazing people are members of Fine Arts. It is our good fortune to have a cadre of talented, informed and enthusiastic colleagues who share common interests. Exactly why we joined!

It is hard to imagine, but not unusual, that Liz Trostli is already brainstorming ideas for next season. Now is the time to let us know the kinds of Salons that interest you or the art forms you think we need to add. For example, we would like to include some “Musical Moments”.

If you are inspired to host a Salon or know of someone who has a collection or passion to share just email us at [email protected] and we will follow up.

Meanwhile, we are looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming Salons where we would also like to hear your ideas and suggestions for next season.

A Note from a Fine Arts Scholar!Emily Cain, Architecture MajorRensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Dear Fine Arts Society of Sarasota Scholarship Committee,

I have had a great first semester at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute! My work in two courses this semester, Architectural Design Studio 1 and Digital Constructs 1, was selected to be archived. Student work that is chosen to be archived can be published on the School of Architecture’s website or in the School of Architecture’s book titled Influx. I have included with this note pictures of my fall semester studio project. The assignment was to design a house for artist Frank Stella and molecular animator Janet Iwasa. The design of the house draws inspiration from Frank Stella’s Chodorow II, from the colors of the house to the overall geometry of the space. The house features a series of reliefs and extrusions that can only be recognized with the house is in elevation or section. When viewing the house plan, the house appears to be two dimensional. Due to the fact that color is an important part of the model, the windows of the house are the same color as the walls on which they are located. It is for this reason that the interior of the house is completely white. The colored glass from the windows creates shadows of the geometry throughout the interior.

In this space, Janet Iwasa and Frank Stella live and work side-by-side. The interior plan was designed to facilitate collaboration between its occupants. Their living space can be found on the first level of the house, which includes their separate rooms and a shared kitchen area. In Janet Iwasa’s role as a molecular animator, she works collaboratively with animators and artists to model the movement and structure of molecules. A shared workspace exists on the second floor, allowing Iwasa to receive the assistance and collaboration she needs for her profession. I want to wish you a Happy New Year and thank your for your support this semester!
