AMERICAN LHASA APSO CLUBNATIONAL SPECIALTY TROPHY FUND COMMITTEE

March 1998

As you know, the National Specialty Trophy Committee was formed by the ALAC Board in 1986. In addition tocoordinating the trophies for the ALAC National Specialty, the committee has been charged with solicitation ofcontributions to the Trophy Fund.

As you will recall, last year's trophy table was breathtaking. This year will be no exception. One of our own LhasaApso fanciers, Karen Nichols, has graciously accepted our invitation to create the trophies for the 1998 National. All will beoriginal art, including the first place trophies in the classes. To cover the cost of these trophies, we will definitely need yourdonations. It will be necessary to collect at least $1,500 this year. The purpose of this letter is, therefore, to solicit yourcontribution to support the trophy fund. Each trophy donation is acknowledged in the National Specialty catalog.Donations must be received by May 1. 1998, to be included in the catalog.

As in the past, there are four categories for contributors: Benefactor (two reserved ring side seats at Futurity andNational): $50 and up; Patron: $30 to $49; Contributor: $20 to $29; and Supporter: up to $20. We have taken the liberty ofincluding a contribution form at the bottom of this letter.- We would appreciate receiving your donation as soon as possible.

Thank you in advance for contributing to the success of the 1998 National Specialty. Please make your checkpayable to "ALAC" and send it to:

E. Naomi HansonALAC National Specialty Trophy Fund4409 Colebrooke Ln. SELacey, WA 98513

President's Message

Hello ALAC Members,

The Board met on February 14th, '98 in New York. Inattendance were Bud Brockway, Larry Bruton, SteveCampbell, Betty Chidley, Beveraly Drake, Pat Keen-Fernandas, Ann Lanterman, Judy O'Dell, Dot Primm, RaySledzik, Bobbie Wood. Esther Defalcis did a wonderfuljob of organizing our paperwork for the meeting.

A number of issues were covered in the meeting includinga report from the Lhasa Apso Breed Council of Englandrepresented by the Peter Millet. He shared with us an up todate accounting of how they have progressed since the firstdiscovery of PRA in Lhasas in England and since inEurope. PRA is a hereditary disease that usually shows upin dogs after the age of 2. This is a problem in a number ofbreeds including poodles here in the US. Until we starttesting our own stock it is still a question. We won't knowwhether or not it is an issue in the US. There is hope thateventually a DNA marker will be found. However that isprobably a long way off. Once the markers are established, effected & carrier animals could be determined before theyare bred.

DNA markers are something that would be of greatestimportance if we could determine the markers for RenalDisease. Since this disease does not appear to be a simplerecessive, it may be difficult to find. But wouldn't it bewonderful to breed our wonderful animals without havingto worry about such awful genetic diseases. Some work, Iunderstand has been started in this direction. Possibly theclub should financially back, at least in part, some of thisresearch.

On a lighter note, don't forget the National is coming up inJune 16-20, '98 in Denver CO. Please send your trophydonations to Naomi Hanson. The trophies this year will befabulous. Karen Nichols from TX did a watercolor for theRaffle/games year before last that was wonderful, andbrought a very high price I might add. She is doing all thetrophies for this year's National. They should be justspeculator!! I for one can wait to see them. All theinformation for the National is included in this issue.

Another item that is has been mailed with this issue is theHandbook. I'm sure everyone is be glad to see an updatedroster. Larry and Jan Bruton sent a lot of time doing a goodjob on this project. However, with all the area codechanges throughout the country there are bond to be somethat are not correct. If you have any corrections for theroster please contact Esther Defacis 770-945-6767 [email protected]

Futurity, Secretary/Coordinator

As of January 29th, 1998 I have received 83 futuritynominations. (Nominations close the end of February). The total nominations last year was 110.

I am hoping our show entry this year will be about thesame as the total six regions was last year, 75.

Hopefully, the new format for prize money, will be anincentive to nominate litters. It certainly will be mucheasier to calculate and no matter how small the entry, the Grand Futurity, Best Puppy and Best Adult winnerswill receive a great deal more prize money this yearthan in the past. As our litter nominations improve, wehave the opportunity to offer larger amounts of prizemoney.

Eligibility for 1999 litters starts December 1, 1997through November 30, 1998. Be sure your litternomination is made within ninety days of birth.Nominations will not be accepted anytime within theyear as they were for the 1998 nominations

Two nominations have been received for 1999.

Health & Education

I have not heard anything else from AKC about DNAtesting at the specialty in Colorado and fear that we sentour reply too late for action this year. The committeestill plans to have CGC Testing at the Specialty andrequests that entry forms for CGC be included in someclub mailing. I am currently working on a web-site andwould include a section for interested parties to (a)Download Educational Materials and (b) send otherinquiries to me concerning health and/or educationalmatters - if approved by the board. Since my e-mailaddress is published both in the New Bulletin and on theALAC HOME PAGE I am receiving an average of 3queries weekly - mostly from new owners manyconcerning the kidney problems mentioned on thehomepage. Inquiries sent via e-mail are responded toquickly and reach the party much faster. This has cutdown on the number of long distance calls I must return(an expense that I have been personally absorbing.)

Respectfully submitted,

Lynn Jamison, Chair

Historian

I received a total of 21 boxes of ALAC material fromBecky Johnson in December, and have currentlycompleted an inventory of the contents of 15 of those

Page 28: February March 1998 The Lhasa Bulletin Volume 1-98 1998.pdf · February March 1998 The Lhasa Bulletin Volume 1-98 Published Bi-Monthly by The American Lhasa Apso Club SANTA RUZ KENNEL

boxes. My goal is to complete the inventory andpublish it in a future issue of The Bulletin, in order forthe membership to know what materials are availablefor research, etc.

There are some interesting articles and photographs insome of the oldest publications dating back to the late1950's and early '60's that might be of interest to thefancy, copyright laws permitting. Publishing these onan occasional basis in The Bulletin would assist inALAC's education efforts relating to the history of theLhasa Apso.

One of the more exciting finds is the existence ofnarrated tapes of the early Specialties. I would like topurchase these tapes ($150) and make arrangements toshow it in the Hospitality Room at the National, on anon-going basis during the week. I think it wouldprovide people with a wonderful snapshot of both breedand ALAC history.

There exists some duplication of materials, especiallymagazines, which I recommend we sell some of these atthe National to help pay for the tapes previouslymentioned. We could also donated to the ALAC Raffleat the National for breed rescue. Once the inventory iscompleted, I will submit to the Board a list of thosematerials recommended for donation.

I welcome any comments and suggestions from theBoard and the membership regarding how we mightshare this historical information with a broader segmentof the fancy.

Measurement Certification

The MCP certified ten (10) dogs in 1997 and one wasmeasured only. Numbers are low once again due to myunavoidable absence from the National Specialty lastyear. An effort will be made to attend this year, thoughif it is still held during the same prime week in June itwill again be difficult for me to leave for a prolongedtrip. As requested many times by many members, I hopethe board will consider changing the date of ourSpecialty week to one which will make it easier for themembership to attend, as well as making it safer for thetransportation of our dogs.

The increase in the MCP fee was put into effect last falland was received with no complaints. It should generate

Page 29: February March 1998 The Lhasa Bulletin Volume 1-98 1998.pdf · February March 1998 The Lhasa Bulletin Volume 1-98 Published Bi-Monthly by The American Lhasa Apso Club SANTA RUZ KENNEL

a little more profit for ALAC, especially if we can bringthe certification numbers up. Income and projectedbudget submitted to ALAC Treasurer on January 8,1998.

I also would like to have more qualified measurers tohelp gather statistics during the year, as the board hassuggested, but learning to be an accurate and consistentmeasurer takes time and supervision, and as yet I havenot been in a position outside of my own area tosatisfactorily train any new people. I am sure that theALAC Board would not wish to jeopardize the accuracyor integrity of the Program simply to have an increasethe in the certification numbers.

I also hope to see more active participation in the MCPby some of the ALAC Officers and Board of directorduring this coming year. All it takes is a few minutes, afew measurers and a dog over 2 years old, so do take thetime to support this worthwhile ALAC program.

Ways and Means

At this point I have no report because I have resignedfrom the chairmanship of Ways and Means. Problems

at home are overpowering and there is only so much Ican do. Susan is getting a new chairman.

The only thing I have to say is that no Dash Plates havebeen ordered because I was not asked to do so. Ihonestly believe that most of the members will beunhappy if they are not ordered. Many have said so tome. They are momentous of the event.
