Many people dream about creating a bathroom with spa-like amenities, but most of us still struggle with rooms that are 100 square feet or less. Even though your bathroom may be small, there are many ways to give it more style and character without having to tear down walls.
Replace your rusted old medicine cabinet with a framed mirror. A handsome mirror placed above the sink will refl ect light and pick up the color and pattern of the walls. Mirroring one wall of a narrow bath can make it appear wider. Two mirrors strategically placed opposite each other will make the room seem more spacious.
Install a shelving system above the toilet to hold bathroom essentials. Several manufacturers make skinny shelving units that can fi t in smaller rooms and give you a place to stash your stuff without taking up a lot of fl oor space.
Get rid of outdated colors like fl amingo pink, avocado green and bright yellow. Rich neutral shades like almond and ecru help open up the room and allow you to decorate with brightly colored towels. (Your bathroom will have a more polished look if you match the color of towels and rugs or choose complimentary rather than contrasting shades.) Adding a fi nish, such as crackle or a brushed effect, gives the walls texture and interest.
Create the illusion of a higher ceiling by painting a lattice design or installing molding around the edge of the ceiling to draw the eye upward. Adding vertical striped wallpaper or painting stripes on the walls will make the room seem taller. Large and busy wallpaper patterns should be avoided, as they can often make a small room seem even smaller.
Lighting can also make or break your bathroom’s style. If your ceilings have some height, installing soft diffused
lighting or recessed lights is more attractive and easier on the eyes than fl uorescent bulbs. A
mirror with
vanity lights can make a huge difference in a room with no window. A skylight is a great way to make a room seem larger if you are planning more extensive remodeling.
Replacing an outdated shower curtain with a new curved design will provide you with more elbowroom in the shower. Some of the newer curtains have handy pockets on the inside for storing bath gels, loofas, shampoo, etc. Install a water-resistant shower radio or CD player to enjoy music while you bathe.
If you rarely take baths, replace the tub with a glass-enclosed shower stall or install a rainfall showerhead, a multi-function shower or a handheld shower unit. In a small bathroom a clear shower door gives the illusion of more space than a patterned shower curtain.
Updating your cabinetry with a scaled down vanity or sleek pedestal sink will open up more space. Some of the newer vanities are taller than but not as wide as older models. Replacing a dark wood vanity with a lighter color can also make the room seem larger. If the cabinetry of your vanity still works with the overall look of the room, update old hardware with new drawer pulls.
Installing a stylish new bowl-type sink or beautiful new faucets will make the room seem more contemporary. Faucets come in a wide variety of designs and fi nishes to coordinate with any décor from Victorian to ultramodern. If you are updating your faucets with chrome, brushed nickel or wrought iron, choose a mirror frame that coordinates with the style to help give the room a more coordinated look.
Make more effective use of the wall space you have with a glass shelf above the sink, clothes hooks, towel racks and attractive cup and toothbrush holders. The idea is to contain clutter as much as possible in containers that are practical but also nice to look at. If storage space is limited, use handsome baskets for storing rolled up towels and washcloths.
If the bathroom has a window, you can make it more dramatic by adding a valance, or keep it simple with a tab-top curtain, mini-blinds or a textured window shade. Covering half the window with a curtain held in place with a tension rod or using shutters over the bottom part of the window will maintain privacy while still allowing in light.
Replace old fl ooring with new linoleum or tiles. There are a wide array of styles and colors on the market now that you can easily install yourself. You can also choose a design from a whimsical vinyl fl ooring collection and install fl ooring that mimics
the look of ocean water, sand or rock surfaces.
Don’t forget about safety. Make sure your
tub has a non-skid mat and choose bath rugs with non-slip backing to hold them in place on fl oors. It is always
wise, too, to add a safety rail near the tub and shower if you don’t already have one. Copyright © Publishers-Edge

Most people underestimate the dramatic impact lighting can have on a home. Whether you are completely redecorating a room or just updating a few accessories, choosing the right lamps can make a huge difference.
Before you shop for lighting fi xtures, think about the theme or mood you are trying to achieve with furnishings and accessories. Take photos of the room to bring with you to the lighting showroom, along with fabric samples if you are trying to match a shade or lamp base color to upholstery, fl ooring or other accessories.
The salesperson can help you choose lighting that fi ts the scale of your space if you bring room measurements, including ceiling height. Keeping the size of the room in mind can help you avoid the mistake of buying an oversized or undersized chandelier or a table lamp that is too small for the space.
Think about the type of lighting you need in the room. Do you have outdated ceiling fi xtures that need to be replaced? Would task lighting be better in a particular area?
Look through furniture magazines for ideas and ask for suggestions at lighting showrooms. The sales representative might show you several selections to modernize your room such as track lighting, recessed lights, or a lamp/ceiling fan combo. Monorail is a variation of track lighting that offers users the convenience of curving the track into different shapes with low or normal voltage options.
If you have small areas where a table and lamp won’t fi t, try a fl oor lamp with an interesting base and shade. Consider adding bookcase lights to showcase collections, or use strategically placed halogen lights to highlight your wall art. Installing under cabinet lighting in your kitchen can help you with food preparation and cleanup while accenting your countertops.
Try to think of lamps as decorative objects that can enhance your living space, not just fi xtures to hold light bulbs. Layering your light sources with dimmer switches, under counter lights, and canisters that direct light downward allows you to provide ample light for specifi c tasks and set a mood for entertaining or relaxing.
Dining rooms and foyers offer many lighting possibilities. Shop around for hanging fi xtures to accent the dining table or entryway. Depending on your décor, a sparkling chandelier, pendant style lamp or nostalgic stained glass style can provide the perfect complement
to other furnishings.Don’t overlook the bathroom when you’re updating lights.
Modern vanity fi xtures use higher wattage bulbs shielded by attractive globes to provide plenty of light for grooming without creating an annoying glare. Installing a dimmer in your bathroom will allow you to enjoy a lower level of lighting for those times when you might like to have a relaxing soak in the tub.
You should be a bit more casual with your lighting choices for a family room. You might use a sturdy lamp with a wrought iron base on one table and an antique fl oor lamp purchased at an antique mall in another part of the room.
Generally for living rooms and dining rooms you should shop for the best quality lighting you can afford. Save the trendy styles at cheaper price points for the family room or bedrooms, since they will likely be replaced more often.
Table lamps are available in a wider choice of colors, styles and prices than ever before. Brushed metal fi nishes, polished steel, bronze and pewter are very popular right now. Bright and bold colored lamp bases are also in demand as consumers look for ways to get away from the tired beiges and whites that have dominated lamps for years. Base materials like wood, stone and wrought iron look terrifi c teamed with classic shades in earthy browns and rich colors like burgundy, navy and black. The trend for shades decorated with crystal and beads seems to be waning as consumers seek more classic lines enhanced with texture and color.
When choosing lights for reading, keep in mind that task lights should be behind the reader’s shoulder. One of the easiest ways to achieve this is by placing a fl oor lamp on either side of an easy chair. Make sure the bottom of the shade is at eye level to avoid glare.
Wall sconces on either side of a fi replace help draw attention to the area while providing general lighting for the room. Architectural elements such as brick or stone can be highlighted with recessed down lights installed in the ceiling over a mantle.
Use lamps to give a room an air of casual appeal, cozy warmth or upscale formality. Look for unexpected spaces, such as bookcases and windowsills, where you can place small lamps for accent lighting, or make a statement by highlighting a particular area with an oversized lamp the eye is immediately drawn to. At the start of a new year, it is not uncommon for individuals to resolve to get into better shape or exercise more frequently. Often, many people spend money on fi tness club memberships and then, as the year progresses, they may feel guilty when work or family commitments prevent them from exercising at the gym as often as they should. To avoid the cost of a wasted membership and to utilize free time without worrying about a facility’s hours, health-minded individuals should consider turning an extra room into a home gym. Creating an effective workout area can be done without spending a fortune. It just takes a little planning and a commitment on your part to actually use the home gym once you’ve assembled the equipment.
Before you purchase any additional equipment, take inventory of what you already have and measure the room to see how much space is available. You may want to set up a TV or media player on a stand so you can use exercise DVDs, listen to music or watch TV as you exercise. Plan for open space as well as equipment. For example, a multi-station machine needs about 50 to 200 square feet, while an exercise bike or rowing machine needs only 10 square feet. You may also want to be able to do fl oor exercises, swing your arms or roll around on a fi tness ball without bumping into things.
Analyze your interests and fi tness level. You may want to make an appointment with a trainer or consult a few fi tness books to determine the exercises and equipment that can help you achieve your goals. And, of course, you need to fi gure out how much money you can spend. Many people associate the words “home gym” with expensive machines, but there are many inexpensive alternatives you can use to tone your body. Jump ropes, resistance bands, yoga mats and Pilates DVDs cost very little but can yield impressive results when used regularly.
For a good cardiovascular workout, you can choose from treadmills, elliptical trainers, exercise bikes and other fi tness machines. A treadmill is often an excellent choice because of its versatility. It can be used for walking, running and building strength in your legs and back. You can also increase or decrease the diffi culty of your workout by changing the speed, incline and direction.
Before you invest in any piece of equipment, evaluate its price, safety, effectiveness, space effi ciency, durability and the reputation of its manufacturer. Equipment can range from $300 for a stationery bike to $2,000 and up for a multi-station machine. If you can’t afford some of the higher priced machines, you may be able to buy used equipment from a reputable dealer or online. Research whether the used equipment comes with a warranty, and if it does, be sure to get a warranty in writing.
For light toning and muscle-building, a set of weights ranging from fi ve to 50 pounds is a good investment. Resistance bands can be alternated with free weights for variety.
A fi tness ball can give you a challenging workout of the upper and lower body, strengthen your abdominal muscles and help tone your legs. Choose the size recommended for your height and weight and try to buy a ball that comes with an exercise video or book.
After your home gym is set up, plan a regular workout that includes a fi ve- to 10-minute warm-up and at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise. Resistance training should be done at least a couple of times a week in combination with an aerobic workout or separately. Allow time for stretching and fl exibility exercises and a fi ve-minute cool down period. If you’re out of shape and have not exercised in a while, it is a good idea to visit your doctor for a checkup before starting an exercise regimen. Copyright © Publishers-Edge

Shutters, Blinds and ShadesShutters, BlindsA Guide to
Window treatments offer a fast and convenient way to improve the appearance of any room in the home. Unfortunately many people put up standard mini-blinds or curtains without considering other choices. Before you choose a window covering, give some thought to each window. Do you want to let more light in or block it out? Do you need more privacy or does the window offer a terrifi c view? Can the window be used to enhance a decorating theme in the room?Shutters
Shutters have become increasingly popular in recent years. They enhance the decor of a room and can transform an ordinary space into a showplace in minutes. The larger the louver, the more modern the appearance of the room. Shutters cost more than blinds or shades, but they are an investment that can increase the value of your home. They offer a terrifi c way to control privacy, darkness and light, and they make a dramatic design statement at the same time.
Vinyl plantation shutters are easy to clean and practically maintenance free. They will save you 20 to 40 percent off the cost of wood shutters, and you never have to worry about fading, painting, shrinking or cracking. Many manufacturers offer bi-fold and bypass arrangements as well as arches for special window treatments such as patio doors. Wood painted arches come in a variety of styles, and some slatted, honeycomb and pleated arches are designed to coordinate with matching window blinds.
Deco framing is a great way to improve the look of plain windows. Divider rails provide more fl exibility and allow upper and lower louvers to operate separately. Dual view shutters offer the same fl exibility but without a divider rail. Blinds
Wooden blinds are available in many fi nishes with a choice of wide or narrow slats. The fabric tapes also come in a range of colors, making it possible to easily coordinate blinds with upholstery fabrics. Wooden blind fi nishes vary from light birch or pine to dark cherry.
Faux wood blinds, available in several colors, offer a choice of smooth or sandblasted fi nishes. The faux wood fi nishes are practical and attractive choices for bathrooms, kitchens, family rooms and children’s rooms.
Metal blinds can work well if you are furnishing an offi ce or seeking a more high-tech look, but most decorators recommend a softer look for residential interiors.
Fabric mini-blinds are available in a variety of colors, textures and standard sizes. They can also be custom-made for odd-sized windows. They are easy to install and offer a fast and inexpensive way to change the look of a room.
Vertical blinds are frequently used for large windows and sliding doors. They resemble draperies but offer more controlled light management along with low maintenance. Available in textured fabrics and embossed patterns, they are lightweight and stay dust free.
Bamboo and matchstick blinds in classic brown and light tan fi nishes can be used to achieve a more casual feel. They are inexpensive, easy to maintain, and available in standard widths. Shades
Shades have come a long way from the awkward and fl imsy roll-up styles of years past. They are available in transparent, opaque and blackout densities, allowing the user to choose the amount of light that is allowed in. Honeycomb shades have a unique construction that traps air in the honeycomb pleats and insulates against
summer heat and winter cold. Shades also offer the option of leaving the top down or bottom part up to suit your privacy and lighting needs. For a more traditional look, decorators recommend choosing a shade close to your wall color.
Balloon shades cover the top half or third of the window at all times. They are constructed with a large amount of fabric and generally work best in bedrooms. Roman shades offer more light control and use less fabric than a balloon shade. They are frequently made of see-through fabrics or may be constructed of canvas to block out more light.
Shades can also be custom-made to fi t your windows and can be constructed of soil and dust-repellent material. They are often a good choice for picture windows where a transparent effect is preferred during the day with more opaque coverage at night.
Major manufacturers display their window treatments at window covering specialty stores, department stores and home improvement centers. Study their displays to spark ideas for your own home, then consult a window covering specialist to determine the proper way to measure your windows to ensure a perfect fi t.
