School Closure – Monday 2 FebruaryThankyoutotheoverwhelmingmajorityofparents/carerswhoshowedtheirsupportfortheschoolduringandfollowingtheclosurelastMonday.ItispleasingtobeabletoreportthatonFriday6February,wereceivednewsfromthepolicethattheperpetratorofthehoaxwasarrestedandwillbefacingcharges.AsstatedinMrFerguson’sletterofTuesday3February,ithasalsobeenconfirmedthattheindividualconcerned,wholivessomewayoutofourgeographicalarea,hasnoconnectiontotheschool.

NEWSOxford SuccessCongratulationstoAnietieEkanemandFinnMcQueen,whohavebothbeenofferedplacestostudyatOxfordUniversity.AnietieaimstostudyHistoryofArt,whileFinnhasappliedforanEnglishLiteraturedegree.Goodlucktothemboth,andtoalltheotherYear13studentsintherun-uptotheirfinalexaminations.
Debating Team Place 16th in the CountryWeweredelightedtohearthat,afterRound1oftheDebateMateUrbanDebateLeague,Isleworth&Syonplaced16 thinthewholecountry. KS4 Badminton Win GoldOurKeyStage4Badmintonteamweresuccessfulonceagainthishalfterm,astheyretainedtheircrownasWestLondonChampionsonFriday6February.TheybeatKingsburyAcademyinthefinalafteranotherfantasticperformancefromtheteam.Theynowprogresstothenextstageofthecompetition,takingplaceinMarch.WelldonealsotoourKeyStage3team,whowonabronzemedal,andonlymissedoutonthefinalplay-offbyasinglepoint.Readmoreonthewebsite:http://www.isleworthsyon.org/?p=45007.
Auschwitz VisitOnThursday5February,GeorgeBridgewaterandJackTakeda(bothYear12)visitedtheconcentrationcampatAuschwitz,aspartoftheirA-LevelHistorystudents.Bothstudentsfoundtheexperiencetobeverymovingandinformative.WewillbewelcomingJanineWebbertotheschoolonWednesday11March.JanineisaHolocaustsurvivor,andshewillbetellingherpoignantstorytoallstudentsinYear9.
Meet the Author: Alan GibbonsWednesday28Januarysawthelatestinstalmentinour‘MeettheAuthor’series,wherestudentsaregiventheopportunitytolistentoafamouswritertalkabouttheirexperiencesandtheircraft,beforetheygetthechancetoaskquestions.Thistimewewelcomedaward-winning author Alan Gibbons, who gave a fantastic talk and held a book signing afterwards. Brilliant Club GraduationOurYear7and8BrilliantClubparticipantstookpartintheirgraduationceremonyonSaturday31January.TheytravelledwithMrFisherandMrsJenningsto theUniversityofSussex,wheretheycelebratedthecompletionof theirScholarsProgramme.Duringthe termlyprogramme,theyreceivedtuitionfromaPhDstudent,andwroteanessayatKeyStage4level.Welldonetoallthestudentswhotookpart.

School Developments – A New Teaching BlockPlanningmeetingshavestartedaswelooktobuildanewteachingblockontheschoolsite,whichwillcopewithaneventualincreaseinschoolroll.Ourplanistodevelopaschemethatalsoenhancessomeofthecurrentenvironmentalissuesatschool;forexample,re-configuringsomeofthesmallerteachingspacesandgettingridofsomeofthetemporaryaccommodation.Ourarchitect,CatherineRamsdenfrom‘UsefulSimple’,wasresponsiblefortheprojecttorefurbishtheHumanitiesandICTteachingarea,andshealsohasexperienceofseveralothereducationprojects.Catherinewillbeworkingwithalargeteamofexpertswhowillproduceaschemefittingfortheschoolaswenearour400thanniversary.

Appearance Policy – ReminderItisstillconcerningthatanumberofboysarebeingsenthomeforignoringourAppearancePolicyandinparticularforbreachesofexpectationwithregardtohairstyles.Ourpolicyisclear,long-standingandallofourstudentsareawareoftherequirementsthroughrepeatedremindersinassembliesandintutortime.Therules,asstatedintheirstudentplanners,areasfollows:
Hairshouldbeconventionalinstyleandinlength(abovethecollarandnoshorterthanablade2)andshouldnotbeartificiallycoloured,“spiked”orcontainstylingproducts.Excessivelyshavenhair(belowablade2/whereskinonheadisvisible),shavedeyebrowsoranyshavenstep/lines/patterns/fashiontrims/high-tops/low-topsarenotacceptable.
