SITUATION

1. Cadets in Level 5 and above are to practice organizing and executing a Field Training Exercise.

MISSION

2. To provide Level 5 cadets the opportunity to organize and execute a Field Training Exercise.

EXECUTION

3. General Outline

The exercise will be conducted in 4 phases.

a. Phase 1: Advance party will pick up equipment from the squadron storage and ASU Chilliwack, and then proceed to AREA C to setup

b. Phase 2: All cadets and staff will complete kits checks and to depart for AREA C to commence training upon arrival

c. Phase 3: All personnel will depart AREA C for LHQ

d. Phase 4: Rear party will return all equipment to ASU Chilliwack and the squadron storage

4. Group & Tasks

GROUP: Advance Party (Sgt Khan, Sgt Falconer-Chow, Cpl Grewal, AC Raza, Cpl Crawford, [Officers TBD]) TASKINGS:

(1) Pick up rental vehicles. Location will be confirmed with Transport.

(2) Meet at LHQ for 0830. Load all required equipment from LHQ and squadron storage.

(3) Load all requested equipment from ASU Chilliwack at 1100.

(4) Proceed to local restaurant for lunch, then proceed to Columbia Valley AREA C to setup all required equipment.

GROUP: Kit Check (TBD) TASKINGS:

(1) Do incoming kit-check for all cadets; check their medical sheets and parental permission.

(2) Load all Cadets and Staff onto bus. Bus is to depart by 1800 heading for Columbia Valley AREA C.

GROUP: Instructors (Fsgt Ram, Fsgt Gaviola, Fsgt Yeh, Fsgt Lee, Fsgt Ng, Sgt Hipolito, Fsgt Peng, Fsgt Kenny, WO2 Hersh, WO2 Kang) TASKINGS:

(1) Instructors are to instruct their bloks as per the time table outlined in Annex A. Their activity plans are located in Annexes E through M.

GROUP: Syndicate Staff (Fsgt Ram, Fsgt Gaviola, Fsgt Yeh, Fsgt Lee, Fsgt Ng, Sgt Hipolito, Fsgt Peng, Fsgt Kenny, WO2 Hersh, WO2 Kang) TASKINGS:

(1) Supervise the cadets tasked to their syndicates as set in Annex N (2) Promote esprit du corps via attitude checks. (3) Ensure syndicates meet blok timings as set in Annex A

GROUP: Support Staff (Fsgt Ram, Fsgt Gaviola, Fsgt Yeh, Fsgt Lee, Fsgt Ng, Sgt Hipolito, Fsgt Peng, Fsgt Kenny, WO2 Hersh, WO2 Kang) TASKINGS:

(1) Sign out required personal equipment to cadets on loan cards. Cadets are responsible for accounting for all equipment.

(1) Field strip all MREs. Heat MREs prior to breakfast on 8 Feb 13 and 9 Feb 13, pursuant to the times outlined in Annex A.

(1) Field strip all MREs. Heat MREs prior to lunch on 8 Feb 13 and 9 Feb 13, pursuant to the times outlined in Annex A.

(1) Field strip all MREs. Prepare mug-up on 7 Feb 13 and dinner on 8 Feb 13, pursuant to the times outlined in Annex A.

GROUP: Kit sign-in and out (WO2 Kang and WO2 Hersh) TASKINGS:

(1) Document the loaning of kit and ensure its retrieval from cadet GROUP: Fire Piquet (TBD) TASKINGS:

(1) Supervise cadets on fire piquet. (2) Maintenance and upkeep of fire and fuel supplies. (3) Wake up cadets that are assigned to the next shift as outlined in Annex M.

GROUP: Rear Party (Sgt Khan, Sgt Falconer-Chow, Cpl Grewal, AC Raza, Cpl Crawford, [Officers TBD]) TASKINGS:

(1) To load equipment after Support Staff has accounted for all pieces. Ensure cadets fold all tents properly and in accordance with provided instructions from ASU Chilliwack.

(2) To return equipment to ASU Chilliwack. Be prepared to hang tents for drying.

(3) Return equipment to the squadron storage.

(4) Return equipment to the LHQ. Cadets shall arrange rides form the LHQ after all the work is complete.

(5) Officers are to return the rental vehicles.

5. Coordinating Instructions

a. Timings. Training schedule is attached at Annex A.

b. RVs. Pick up and Drop off to take place at the 767 Dearman Hall by parents before and after the exercise. RV at AREA C is the barn.

SERVICE SUPPORT

6. Service support will consist of:

a. Rations and Feeding. – MREs are requested for 44 pers breakfast, lunch, and dinner 8 Feb 13, and breakfast and lunch 9 Feb 13. Fresh rations are requested for 2 mug-ups and 3 snacks from the sponsoring committee. 72 individual bottles of drinking water are requested from the sponsoring committee.

b. Transport. – Transportation will consist of a passenger coach, 1-ton cube van, and one 4x4 safety vehicle.

c. Exercise Stores. – A list of equipment required for the exercise is attached in Annex B.

d. Dress and Equipment. – Combat clothing is preferred. Warm and dry civilian clothing will be acceptable. Cadets are to ensure that they have a suitable sleeping bag. A list of required equipment, attached at Annex D, will be issued to all cadets. All kit will be inspected prior to departing the LHQ for suitability. Cadets without the appropriate kit will be sent home. Parents are not to leave the LHQ until their cadet’s kits has been inspected.

e. Safety. – There will be a safety briefing for all personnel on 7 Feb 14. As this is a wilderness area encounters of wildlife are a possibility. No food is allowed to leave the HQ at any time as this may attract the local wildlife. EMERGENCY EVACUATION PLAN – ANNEX C

f. Accommodations. – Cadets will be in Modular Tents for the duration of the exercise. Cadet staff will be in staff tents for the duration of the exercise.

g. Emergency Procedures. – In case of emergency NO DUFF will be called. In severe cases casualty will be evacuated in the emergency vehicle.

h. Medical/Emergency Facility. – FAO for the exercise is (TBD). A level first aid kit is required at HQ and a safety vehicle will be available in the event of a medical emergency that required transport. There is a phone located in the barn. First aid will be administered at the training site and HQ is required. Medical evacuation will be to Chilliwack. We are 40 minutes away from the hospital. i. Water. – Water on site is non-potable. Drinking water is available at HQ.

j. POL. – A POL point will be setup by advance party. The POL point will be clearly marked. Access to the POL will be restricted. POL procedures to be explained during the safety briefing. A spill kit will be located at the POL.

k. Fire Fighting. – Firefighting equipment is provided by ASU Chilliwack. Equipment will be located near the fire piquet and in HQ.

l. Smoking. – There will be NO SMOKING on this weekend.

m. Medications. – Cadets on medication will declare all medication upon arrival for exercise. Medications will be administered at prescribed times by (TBD).

n. Restricted Areas. – Boundaries will be in effect at the exercise. Boundaries will be determined and marked upon arrival. Boundaries are to be explained during the safety briefing.

o. Hygiene. – There are no shower facilities on site. Portable toilets will be clearly marked. Cadets are responsible for maintaining their personal hygiene. Wash stations will be available.

8. Signals:

a. Exercise communications will be via radio. A radio network will be set up on site. Radio will be signed out of HQ and call signs will be assigned on site.

b. Whistles and Air Horns will be available in the event of an emergency. Three blasts will signal a site evacuation and muster at HQ.

EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN EVACUATION PLAN FOR MEDICAL CASUALTIES REF: Map with Directions from Columbia Valley AREA C to Chilliwack Hospital

1. First Aid Officers for the weekend will hold a minimum Standard First Aid qualification. Oxygen therapy equipment requires a Level 2 or 3 certificate.

2. General – In case of a medical emergency the following procedures will be followed.

a. CRITICAL INCIDENTS Critical incidents include anything that requires IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION, such as fractures, spinal injuries, heart attacks, strokes, hypothermia, or allergic reactions that may be life threatening. In the event of a Critical Incident that requires Medical Transport inform the OIC and FAO. Personnel requiring immediate medical attention will be transported in the emergency transport vehicle. The senior FAO’s medical decisions cannot be overruled.

b. NON-CRITICAL INCIDENTS Non Critical Incidents include situations that require medical attention but do not have the same urgency, such as heat stroke, minor fractures, strains, cut, or any injury that would require medical attention. In the event of a Non-Critical Incident notify one of the FAO’s. The senior FAO’s medical decisions cannot be overruled.

FEBRUARY FTX: OPERATION “MEGABLOX”

General

1. There is an optional field training exercise held on 7 Feb 14 to 9 Feb 14. The exercise will be held at “Area C”. This activity is accountable by merit points. Unless the cadet is excused, they are obligated to attend after signing up for the exercise as this is an exclusive squadron event.

2. The cadets are to meet at the squadron LHQ at 1700 for kit check and checking in. Parents are asked not to leave until their cadet has passed the kit check and are fully prepared for the exercise. Cadets with incomplete kits will not be allowed to participate in the exercise.

3. Dinner is not provided on Friday night. Please eat prior to your arrival. Meals will be provided throughout the exercise. If the cadet has any dietary specifications, please notify the staff prior to exercise and arrange for proper dietary needs to be met.

4. Cadets are to dress appropriately for the weather conditions of the exercise. Cadets are recommended to come in olive drab combat gear which can be purchased from army surplus stores. Cadets are not allowed to be wearing combats with Canadian cad-pat or jeans.

5. Cadets are to arrive with all items listed in the attached kit list and a complete permission form. Do not store kit in a suitcase or any rolling carrying bag. Duffel bags or ruck-sacks are recommended. Please ensure all kit have been labeled for easy identification.

MEDICATIONS

All medication must be in their original container with the original labels affixed. Medications shall be placed in a Zip- Lock Bag with the cadet’s name clearly printed on the outside of the bag.

Annex E to Op Order FTX “MEGABLOX” 3 Feb 14

BLOK 1 ACTIVITY PLAN Equipment: Pencils “Cheat Sheets” (F/Sgt Ram to provide) PT gear (Cadets equipment) Location: Open field or area with ability to run around in and go on the ground (grass not gravel) Staff requested: Minimum 6 Warm up: 10 minutes Have cadets run to field and possibly through any safe forested area before circling around leader Run a stretch from head to two for about 5 minutes Brief: 5 minutes Go over instructions of activity (below) Emphasize fact all cadets must complete the exercise before an answer will be given, you must go to a different staff cadet each time, you must stick with your group and you may not work with other groups. Activity: 40 minutes Cadets should already be in 4 groups. Each group will be their own team. The goal of the game is to have cadets solve a “murder” by identifying the suspect, victim, murder weapon, place, and the motive. The cheat sheet will have 5 possibilities for each category. The cadets must find out the answer to each category by going up to one of 5 staff cadets (Each staff cadet will only know the answer to one of categories) and ask them a yes or no question (e.g. was the victim male?/ did the murder weapon involve music). Before answering the question, the staff cadet must make the team do an exercise (light to medium difficulty) then answer the question. If the question is in the staff cadet’s category, they will reply with yes or no. Otherwise they will reply with “I don’t know”. Once cadets have a response, they must head to another staff cadet. Cadets are not allowed to go to the same staff cadet twice in a row. The first team to successfully tell the F/Sgt Ram the answers wins. If a team wins and there is plenty of time left, they have a choice between working on attitude checks and joining F/Sgt Ram in an intensive fitness regiment. Debrief: 5 min

Provide cadets with answer and a mini-story to go along with the answers. Announce winner and debrief on performance and attitude. Tell cadets next block will be with F/Sgt Gaviola. Story: Flores has just bought a new PS4 and is really proud of it. He made sure everyone knew about how awesome it was and how much better it was than the Xbox one. F/Sgt Kenny, who is a diehard Xbox fan, was getting really annoyed, however he was friends with Flores, so he did his best not to mention anything. This Wednesday F/Sgt Kenny was getting swole at the YMCA when he saw his best friend Flores. When he went up to say hello, Flores just ignored him saying he refused to talk to someone who played with Xbox. Kenny normally is a softie at heart, but the testosterone from lifting weights caused him to become extremely angry. In a spurt of rage, he took his One Direction CD out of his walkman and hit Flores over the head with it. Flores did not see it coming and sadly he did not get up from the attack. F/Sgt Kenny was emotionally scarred from killing his best friend, he is now unable to listen to a One Direction song without bursting out in tears, as it brings back those memories. So if F/Sgt Kenny tells you he wont listen to 1D, it is not because they are not talented musicians, it is because of this incident.

BLOK 2 ACTIVITY PLAN Mission

You and your comrades got lost on a hike and the jungle in known for its dangerous animals that appear at night so you must arm yourselves before nightfall. You must construct a large enough base (Biv site) that will house all your comrades and as well as a wall and gate to prevent danger from reaching your comrades. You are able to make additional accommodations to your HQ after you have completed the required items. Each item is valued at a set amount of points.

Objective

Required: Fire Pit 10 HQ 50 Walls/Fences 30 Gate 45 Additional Items: Fire wood storage 10 Fire Signals 10 Snares 15 Bench 20 Chair 20 Bed 20 Table 20 Hut 100 All groups must be able to finish their base within 1 hour. Whoever finishes their base first gets to

go to lunch first. These items must be well done in order to have the full point value. Also the Required Items must be completed BEFORE the “Additional Items” can be constructed. Each team is given 2 copies of the list, and will be taken to their construction area and start immediately after instructions are given.

Rules: All cadets must fit in the base

Cadets must participate and help with construction. Cadets may use twine if they have some. Junior Cadets may use their own knife to cut ferns. Cadets are not allowed to cut down live trees or any sort. Cadets must stay in their area unless they need to use the washroom or for emergencies.

BLOK 3 ACTIVITY PLAN Resources Needed: -Another senior NCO to supervise -Paracord/Thicker String (approx. 100ft) Time Breakdown: Introduction/Briefing – 5 minutes Body (Activity) – 50 minutes Conclusion – 5 minutes Activity Breakdown: The Net

1. Have two nets set up between trees with carrying shapes and sizes of holes prior to activity. 2. Split cadets up into two groups. 3. The objective of the exercise is to have cadets move from one side of the net to the other through

the net. 4. Once a cadet passes through a hole, the hole cannot be used again. While trying to pass through

the hole, no one can touch the net with any part of their bodies. 5. The first team to finish sending cadets through the net to the other side wins. 6. Repeat for best two out of three or three out of five.

Objective: The underlying objective of the exercise is to use teamwork and good planning to finish the exercise.

BLOK 4 ACTIVITY PLAN Materials: Whiteboard – to record results in the end Objective: to complete as many numbers as possible on the list provided Importance: to work together and bond as a team in a competitive environment Boundaries: TBD 10 min- Introduction (Brief Cadets) 1. Teams will be given a list of riddles to complete. Each answer to the riddles can be either found in the forest or made as a camp craft using creativity. 2. Riddles + Object = 15 points Items= 5 points Riddles without objects= 10 3. The team to have the most points in the end will be the winners. Rules: 1. Questions may be asked to WO2 Kang and Fsgt Lee only. 2. Questions will be yes or no questions only (cadets must complete a task in order to ask a question) 3. Cadets cannot ask consecutive questions to the same staff cadet 4. Teams must stay together at all times. If teams decide to split and are caught by a staff cadet, there will be a penalty of 3 points. 40 min for cadets to complete task 15 min debrief and conclusion of activity - Go over the list with cadets and calculate scores once again. Tasks for Fsgts 1. Circulate the area and make sure that all cadets stay in their teams. If cadets are found or seen alone, record who they are and they will be awarded with a penalty of 3 points.

Annex I to Op Order FTX “MEGABLOX” 3 Feb 14

BLOK 5 ACTIVITY PLAN Introduction: 5 Min The activity: Have cadets work together to use platforms without touching the ground to move from one place to another without anyone falling off. Objective – To promote teamwork between cadets. Rules: Part 1 (15 min): Have cadets try to fit everyone on top of a box without anyone falling off and make sure they can stay on for 10 seconds. The cadets must be able to fit everyone on their team on top of the box and first team to do so wins. Anyone who falls off within those 10 seconds causes the team to restart and everyone must get off and try again. Part 2 (15 min): The cadets will start off in their respective teams. Using 2 planks, they must move from one objective to the next. If anyone falls off the planks, the team must restart from the beginning point (or maybe a checkpoint). The teams must move every member of their team onto one plank and move the second plank in front of the first. The planks must be touching each other otherwise the team will have to restart from the beginning/ checkpoint. First team to reach all objectives wins the game. Part 3 (15 min + 5min of usable extra time): If the other two parts are too easy, I’m going to throw some orienteering in there too, albeit in a significantly smaller area. Cadets will be required to use compasses to determine the heading for the next waypoint while having everyone on the planks. Debrief: 5 min Equipment Required:

-­‐ Divide cadets into even groups of four and allow them to nominate leaders. Staff may join in if they please.

-­‐ Pick settings & problems: Settings & Problems will be assigned with a number, group leaders will choose 2 random numbers, one between 1-4, and the other between 1-4. Each group must choose a different number.

-­‐ Groups will make a short skit based on problem+setting, around 2 min long -­‐ Does not need to be serious, but keep it reasonable and cadet appropriate -­‐

LIST OF SETTINGS AND PROBLEMS: Round One: Problems:

1. There is an obstacle you must pass (must be something you would find in your setting, and cannot be passed by simply walking past it)

2. Something has happened to a member of your group (must be something that would happen in your setting, and it must be major (can’t be someone got a minor cut)

3. A stone slab falls from the sky and tells of an impending alien invasion 4. Your mode of transportation has malfunctioned (any type of problem, nothing minor)

Settings: 1. You are climbing Mount Everest 2. You are in an endless ocean, on a ship, all cities are built on floating platforms 3. You are travelling through the desert 4. You are 1000 years in the future

Round 2 Problems:

1. A meteor falls flies through space and threatens to destroy you. 2. You’re team has amnesia. You can remember your own name but not the names of your team

members. 3. Your twin is not actually your twin 4. You are lost without any sign of direction

Settings: 1. You are in a post-apocalyptic world (last survivors) 2. You are travelling in outer space towards a new solar system 3. You are riding the Skytrain to Waterfront from Surrey Central 4. You somehow time travel back to the medieval times and have magical powers

BLOK 7 ACTIVITY PLAN References: Level three IG's 1:Divide class into two. The 60 minute allotted time will be divided into 5 periods as listed below: -Review knot tying/lashings [5-10min] -Construct Bird snares/fishing traps/fishing equipment from natural resources and refuge [15 min] -Construct deadfall traps and simple snares [10min] -Describe animal stalking techniques [10min] -Conduct a trap making competition [remainder of class] The final activity will act as a End of lesson confirmation. 2:Materials required for these activities include, but are not limited to: -Snare wire, enough wire to divide between two competing groups -Two rope of lengths exceeding a minimum of 20 feet -Sports bottles and metal cans for team -Malleable soft plastics (can be salvaged from MRE's) -Fishing line 3:Prior to the lesson cadets should be briefed on their activities, which will also include trap competitions; create boundaries and thoroughly explain those boundaries with safety precautions: if possible acquire supervision from staff cadets for your activities. The instructor(s) should be advised to practice proper knife handling when cutting to avoid serious injuries. Note that the materials and traps which can be dangerous, which should be monitored at all times from the creation and destruction of traps.

NIGHT GAME ACTIVITY PLAN Materials: -Bells with string attached (depends on how many people go) -Flagging tape- two colours needed -Loud Horn (used as signal) Instructions: 1. The group will be divided into two teams: RUNNERS and HIDERS. 2. The game will take place in rounds, each team switching roles each time; a minimum of two rounds will be needed to be played for a fair game. 3. The winning team of each round will get a point- whoever has the most points will win. 4. RUNNERS: the attack team will each have a bell attached to them. They will chase the defence, and try to take away their flagging tape. The members of the team will then escort the caught cadet to the jail. 5. HIDERS: the defence team will get a flagging tape tied to themselves. They will receive a five minute head start to hide from the attack. Their role is essentially to hide and not get their flagging tape taken away. Once the tape is taken away, they are to head to their jail until the round ends. 6. Depending on numbers, if more half the defence team is caught, the attack team will win, and if the defence team has more than half still in the game, the defence team will win. 7. The first two round will be played for 25 minutes each. 8. Seniors may participate in the game if they wish. Those not participating will supervise to make sure everything is going smoothly. Rules: 1. Be safe: no horseplay, shoving, pushing, etc. 2. Be truthful: be honest-if you are out, don't lie, just follow the rules. 3. Boundaries: The regular boundaries in Area C, also dependent on location. 4. Listen to the loud horn: One will signal beginning, and one will signal the end to come back. Timings: 10 min: Brief everyone on instructions and rules 25min x 4: have 4 rounds 10 min: Debrief

SURVIVAL SITUATION ACTIVITY PLAN Time: 1800-2000 (2hrs) Materials: First aid kit, triangle bandages, tenser bandage and clips, medical tape, stretcher, and a car horn or blow horn. Basic overview: Phase 1. Briefing: 10-15 minutes The first face will be an introduction (briefing) of what is to be done in this activity. The briefing will be done by WOII Hersh and additional staff will be present in order to answer any questions that they might have. The detail of the briefing will include: rules of the activity, description of final product, safety precautions, boundaries, introduction of staff, establishment of an “HQ” point, and will answer any undiscussed questions. Phase 2. Short lesson: 15-25 minutes During this phase WO2 Hersh will demonstrate with the help of the other staff what to do if the cadets find the person they are searching for and discovers that they are injured. Therefore instruction on proper first aid techniques will be available if needed by the staff involved with this activity. At the end of this phase the cadets will be slip into groups of two to three depending on how many cadets are present at the FTX. Phase 3. Activity: 1 hour This phase will be the actual execution of the activity. One staff member will be assigned to each group to ensure the safety of the cadets. The cadets will start by devising a plan of where to search first for their missing member. Once a plan is made (depending on weather they make one or not) they will start searching for the missing person. Once the cadets have found the missing person with a simulated injury, the staff member assigned to the group will assign another cadet from the group to possess a simulated injury if time permits. In which case the cadets will have to divide their resources to aid both cadets in need. If time doesn’t permit for the second injury, the cadets will safely stabilize the cadet with the initial injury, then transport him or her to the designated “HQ” point. Phase 4. Conclusion: 20 minutes

If time is abundant, then another “round” of the activity will take place. The rules of this second “round” will be the same as the first, but the injured cadet will we swapped out for another member of the group. However, if time is pressed, then a conclusion lesson will take place in which WO2 Hersh explain how working as a cohesive team, making a plan, and simply respecting each other will help them in future situations, and in the real world.
