February 2015 Quiz

Answer: January QuizThis photograph was taken at Colonnades, enclosures which surrounds Qutub Minar. It appears that the majority of pillars used for supporting this structure are recycled temple pillars from diverse location based on the styling of the carvings, looked similar to what I have seen at Ellora, Kha-juraho and Mysore even. As Dr. Anand Chaturvedi might have guessed correctly, the remanent of the carving pictured in January Quiz could be a carving of Visnu as Narasimha killing Hiranyakaśipu. However, most the carvings on the pillar were filed off to almost smoothness with just the outline of original carving visible. Unfortunately Dr. Chaturvedi did not guess “where” the picture was taken. When I visited this prominent monument in Delhi this year with my family, I had no idea that the rock enclosures in the premises were put together from recycled pillars!
