Hello everyoneIt feels to me like there are a lot of changes going on at the Bridge at the moment. We are looking at what our resources are - people, time and money - and reassessing how the Bridge Community can thrive best with what we have. One consequence of this is that the Bridge Open Day has become the Br idge Open Afternoon and will only be happening on the first Thursday of the month. This will give us the time and space to get together and work on our visions for the future. Everyone is welcome to participate in this process and have a say in what we do. There are also changes within the Greenwood Project - details on page 8.
My favourite change is that we h a v e e m p l o y e d a n e w C o m m u n i t y D e v e l o p m e n t Worker for Underground Sound. Her name is Em Marshall and itʼs great to welcome her to the Bridge.Thank you to everyone who supports and participates in the Bridge Collective and a big thank you from me for everyone who has contributed to this issue. If you want to learn how to put the newsletter together, or would like some of your work included please get in touch. Details inside the back cover.
Hope you enjoy it best wishes
Bev

MARCH
Things are changing at Escot and therefor we are uncertain what will happen in the future. On Friday February 17th we will be finding out about what our future with Escot is and what plans we need to make. On Friday March 3rd we will be having a walk around the estate. You will need to bring a packed lunch, or money to spend in the café. This may be a thank you and ʻgoodbye to Escot as we have known itʼ walk.
Open Minds toolbox
for living with unusual experiences
These are some of the things people have found useful when unusual experiences become overwhelming. Use what helps you and ignore what doesn't help.
MANTRAS'I am safe and healed and whole', 'Love and light and peace' - a phrase or a single word recalled and repeated can be helpful.
IMAGESA piece of art or an image or symbol that makes you feel peaceful and safe. Keep a copy in your wallet.
MEDITATIONCalming the mind and body, working with the breath, focusing inwards, looking for the 'still point'. Even a couple of minutes a day can change your thought patterns and relieve stress.
WALKINGPutting one foot in front of the other, pacing up and down if you are locked into a ward, or seeing where your feet take you. The rhythm of walking calms the mind.
MUSICWhatever music makes you feel good. Music is a powerful way to change your mood and soothe the soul.
TREESTrees remind us to slow down and breathe. They live calmly amidst chaos. They absorb carbon dioxide and give us oxygen. They let go of the past every Autumn and renew themselves in the Spring. Trees are great role models.

DAVID ATTENBOROUGH DOCUMENTARIESIt's something to do with his voice combined with images of Nature...
ANCHORSSomething that grounds you in the here and now: a crystal. A teddy, a blanket, a hat, a pebble, a piece of drift-wood, a photo. Whatever works.
WATERWater cleanses and purifies, it quenches thirst and refreshes, rivers carry stuff away... Images or sounds of the ocean or a clear-running stream are powerful sources of wellbeing.
FILMSWhen the TV is a source or trigger for unusual experiences films cam provide relief in an uplifting or soothing or just distracting story. When reading is too difficult the film of the book can be just as good.
TALKING Sharing stuff with people who have had similar experiences can be a great relief. Why not come to an Open Minds group for a chat and a cuppa...
Open Minds is a peer-support group for people who see, hear or sense things that other people don't (sometimes labelled 'psychosis'). We meet 1-2.30pm at the Bridge Collective on the second Wednesday of the month.

From everything a man erects and builds in his life, in my eyes nothing is better and more valuable than bridges. They are more important than houses, more holy, more general than temples. They belong and are equal to everyone, useful, always built with a purpose, in the place where the largest number of human needs intersects, more persistent than other buildings and do not serve anything that is secret or evil.

UNDERGROUND
SOUND
A busy December in Underground Sound saw a lot of exciting plans and thoughts of collaborations which have got off to a wonderful start in 2017. There are musical collaborations currently underway-‐ no spoilers (!) but we can say they’re including an eclectic mix of banjo, bass, keyboard and reggae inspired beats-‐ look out for the links to Sound cloud coming soon! Also, heads are being put together for plans of a community day, and performance opportunities…. watch this space!
We also saw the addition of a new Community Development worker for music at Underground sound, here’s a little introduction-‐
‘Hi, my names Em Marshall and I’m so happy to be joining the Bridge and to be involved in Underground Sound, a space which has honestly blown me away in terms of the incredible creativity of Alex and everyone that is part of it. I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember and play every day, either on my guitar or any of the slightly random instruments I’ve collected over the years -‐ from djembe drums to Irish flutes to xylophones –I ‘m probably a really horrible neighbour to have (although my neighbours don’t seem to mind toooo much ) Everyone at the Bridge has made me feel so welcome, which has been really appreciated, thank you !’

Running away
Yellow edged grass field
Where the dog’s weed and we played
A solitary tree in the middle
Bark stripped, branched arms open bare
Head drooped down at its urban defeat
Round and round us children go
A totem in the grey flecked, concrete row upon row
Of council lego homes
Stacked like supermarket shelves
One night, I need to run
The TV is too loud and the radio is on
The central heaGng buzzes in every nerve ending
I am full of the very sparks
That lit the torch to light the world
There is no rest in the search for stars
A satellite, I emerge
18
And from round and round the tree
I Catherine wheel
Through the tangled roads of our estate
Each street name passed
A chain of a link broken
No need for shoes
No need for a coat
The smoke of my breath like a steam train
In the November lamp lit air
I run and run
Like wolves are at my heels
Like the devils on horseback
Like the pavement is hot coal
And if I stay s?ll
Even for a second
I will burn
So I run.
Em

How the Bridge Collec0ve worksThe Bridge Collec.ve has a unique organiza.onal structure. It is a flat organiza.on set up as a Community Interest Company with members; with each member having shared control and all staff paid the same hourly wage. The Bridge Collec.ve aims for everyone involved to have the same power to make decisions as everyone else. Decisions about the running of the collec.ve are made at monthly directors’ mee.ngs open to all. Directors are appointed by vote by all members at the AGM.There is no execu.ve director, chair or treasurer. Mee.ngs are chaired by a volunteer chosen at the mee.ng. There is no co-‐ordinator/manager of the organiza.on: management is by peer/collec.ve management.
The Bridge Collec.ve has a small part .me staff team and is run largely on good will and volunteer input. The Bridge Collec.ve achieves a lot of peer support on a small budget. Keyholders (volunteers and part .me staff) open and lock up the building for a group/ac.vity and are the responsible person whilst the ac.vity is taking place. There is no assessment /referral process to take part in Bridge ac.vi.es: people decide for themselves if ac.vi.es are something they would benefit from. People at the collec.ve may have mul.ple roles including: director, employee, sessional worker, self employed, facilitator, keyholder, trainer, volunteer, member, aRendee, visitor; and people take part as both providers and beneficiaries of the collec.ve’s ac.vi.es.
