Beauty Is A Beast By: Ricki - 6th Grade

Has anyone you know talked about the upcoming play, “Beauty is a Beast?” If so, then

you should have some questions about it. Questions like: What are the roles of the play and what’s so exciting about this play? Well, I asked the director, Amber Oetlinger, those exact questions. This article is sure to give you some information about the “Beauty is a Beast” and maybe even convince you to audition yourself.

 The Roles and Stage Crew

Some of the main roles in the play consist of Beauty (a spoiled princess), Fairy (her fairy godmother), and Nick (a young, strong peasant). Other small roles include Peter, Patty, Cindy, Jimmy, Sam and Mandy who are all Nick’s siblings. Auditions were being held February 5th, 3:45 to 4:30 pm. There is a role for every comfort level. If you're not into acting but still want to be in the play, maybe try stage crew. You don’t have to audition if you want to be stage crew. Amber Oetlinger will be contacting those students about a month before the performance. The time commitment is only during the week after school, so you can have your free time during the weekends (and gets lots of sleep!). But you might also have to do your homework during practice because you won’t have much time to do so when you get home.

 About the Play

Oetlinger chose this play because of its message: beauty is not what is on the outside, beauty is what is on the inside of you. Also, there are many, very funny moments in the play. Currently, for the evening performance, it will be held on May 30th. There will also be a morning performance for the school. One of the most exciting parts of the play is seeing it come together. It may be hard to memorize all of your lines and figure out where to go or when. When it all comes together, and you see yourself doing it correctly, you will be happy that all of your hard work is coming together in this play.

 Why You Should Try Out

You never know the talent and confidence you hold inside of yourself until you try. You could be an acting prodigy, or even become famous one day! You will never know until you take your shot. If you think you’re too cool for the play, then you’re wrong. Being in a play is the coolest thing and you may even make new friends. Trust me, I’ve been in a play before, and I’ve met tons of new people. Do not throw away your shot! Try it out for “Beauty is a Beast” (or any play) and see for yourself!

West Basketball Game By: Owen R. - 6th Grade

On January 11th, I went to a New Berlin West

varsity basketball game. Watching the high school varsity game is fun because you can enjoy a competitive game, you can stop at the concession, and you can eat Skittles. This game was at New Berlin West. It was a home game for the Vikings. They played Whitnall. Number 25, Josh Riegler, and number 11, Noah Daniels, on West are the only freshmen. The game was two halves with 18 minutes half. The tallest kid on West is 6’7. The tallest kid on Whitnall is 6’5. Numbers 1, 3, 10, 20, and 32 started for Whitnall. Numbers 3, 5, 20, 21, and 25 started for West.

The first half was a good fight. Both teams came out trying really hard. Whitnall scored first. They made the layup and got fouled. They made their free throws to make the score 3 to 0. Then a few plays later, the Vikings made a layup and got fouled and made their free throw. Plays go by and then number 3, Jaden Ruiz, made a three-pointer. A few plays later the freshman Josh Riegler had a huge block. The crowd went crazy. Plays go by as number 5, AJ Woyak, made a three. The smallest player on West, number 3, Jaden Ruiz, had an amazing block. Then it was halftime. The New Berlin West Vikings were on top winning 21 to 17. West had a 4 point lead

going into the second half. At halftime, the youth players for west came out on the court. It was youth night.

The Vikings came into the second half with the lead and confidence. West attempted an alley-oop, but they failed. Then a few plays later they made the crowd roar as number 45, Billy Wesolowski, had an amazing block. Number 3, Jaden Ruiz, hit yet again another three to add to their lead. Then later in the game number 24, Cody Soik had a huge block. Number 21, Josh Lange, made a three. With 4:45 left on the clock New Berlin West Vikings were up 40 to 36. Number 24, Cody Soik, tried to dunk the ball, but he got fouled. As the ball missed it bounced off the back of the rim and hit the ceiling. It was a good all-around game, but West came out on top and won, 50 to 43.

Holidays  By Adriana and Rachel - 6th Grade

How much do you really know about the holidays? Do you know why Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is important? Do you know the origins of Groundhog Day? The traditions of Valentine's Day? Or do all the holidays other than Christmas, New Years, Halloween, and Thanksgiving not strike you as important? Well, they are important, and we want to make sure you know why these holidays are there and why they matter. We also want you to know where they come from and the big stories behind each holiday. In this article, we’d like to focus on January and February holidays.

Valentine’s Day - Celebrated on February 14th Valentine’s Day is celebrated differently throughout the world. The US celebrates it as a day for love. Kids often give each other cards for the day and grown-ups celebrate it by spending time with their loved ones. However, other places celebrate it differently. Canada uses the day to find a way to tell someone they love them. The holiday originated from a Roman festival celebrated on the 15 of February, and was moved earlier to the 14th, and years later became known as a holiday all over the world.

Groundhog Day - celebrated on the 2nd of February  Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrating the superstition of a groundhog deciding if there will be six more weeks of winter, or if spring will come early. It is all based on if that groundhog sees its shadow or not. Based off of Wikipedia, studies have found no consistent correlation between a groundhog seeing its shadow. There is only about 42% accuracy with the tradition. The learning was originally brought from German-speaking areas that used the badger as a forecasting animal.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day - celebrated on the 21st of January Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He lived during a time during discrimination against African Americans in America. He fought to make things equal and help make a better life for all. His most famous speech was where he spoke the words, “I have a dream…” Now we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day to honor his life and legacy.

President’s Day - celebrated on the 18th of February in 2019 President’s Day was created and is celebrated as a day to celebrate the past presidents., but it actually began as a holiday to solely celebrate George Washington in 1885 according to History.com. It became known only later as a day to celebrate all of the presidents that we’ve had.

So, we hope that you now know more about the holidays and why they are important. We hope that now you can celebrate the holidays and know their meanings and remember them to be important.

Black History Month By: Lilijana Obrochta

Black History Month is a tribute to African-American men and women who have

made important contributions to America and the rest of the World in the categories of politics, science, sports, law, entertainment, arts, and many more. Black History Month was a celebration of African-American history. In 1926, Historian Carter G. Woodson and an association for black’s lives and history announced on the 2nd week of February that the month would be recognized as Black History Month. Black History Month is filled with all sorts of histories about famous black people that changed the world and our lives. For example, as stated in biography.com, Barack Obama became the first African-American president in the history of the US. He became president in 2009 and continued until 2017. Langston Hughes was a poet. Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist. Frederick Douglass was the slave but then became known as the “Father of the Civil Rights Movement.” Jack Johnson became the first heavyweight champ and won the title in 1908. He kept the belt until 1915. John Mercer Langston was the first black lawyer. He was also the great uncle of Langston Hughes, who was a famous poet of the Harlem Renaissance. George Washington Carver was a scientist who developed over 300 products from peanuts, cheese, milk, coffee, flour, ink, plastics, soap, etc. Ron Rhodes Revels was the first African-American senator to ever be elected for U.S. Senate. Shirley Chisholm, the First woman representative, was the first African-American lady elected to the House of Representatives. Madame CJ Walker was a self-made millionaire. She became wealthy by making a long line of hair products for African-Americans. And Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American Oscar winner. Harriet Tubman was also a civil rights activist. Carter G. Woodson started it all. He was a founder of a journal about Black History in 1916. Then, he was cited as the “father of black history.” He launched the celebration in February of 1926. The featured picture is a black and white photo of Carter G. Woodson Some famous leaders are still alive today and spend their time in the public eye. For example, Beyoncé is a singer and a film actress. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is an actor, voice actor, and singer. Tracy Norman is a model. Tiger Woods is a Golfer. Chris Rock is one of the greatest comedians of all time. Tina Turner is a singer and actress. And Tyra Banks is a model, actress, and was a host in America’s Got Talent biography.com stated.

Chinese New Year By: Sophia B, 5th Grade

“Chinese New Year is a Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The festival is usually referred to as the Spring Festival in modern China, and is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia.” -Wikipedia Chinese New Year is a Chinese celebration. With 2018 being the year of the Dog, exciting new 2019 will be the year of the Pig! Depending on the year you were born, it could be your year. You may be wondering; “what is a ‘year of the pig’?” Well, these animals represent different constellations in the sky. Each year is named for a single one of the twelve in the zodiac: The Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. These rotate through all twelve. Each sign only comes every twelve years. 2019 will be the year of the pig, 2020 will be the year of the rat, then it continues with 2021 being the year of the Ox, and 2022 year of the Tiger, etc. The Chinese New Year is based on the old and ancient Chinese calendar. According to records, Chinese New Year has been celebrated for thousands of years. 3,400 to be exact. The calendar usually changed once a new Emperor reigned. The supposed Calendar was based around the phases of the moon. Yin and Yang were used in the calendar, as well as the Chinese zodiac. Both very important. “According to Chinese tradition, Yin and Yang are the two opposing ideas that make harmony in the world” - Newsela, Chinese New Year, 810L. This holiday is one of the most important festivals for Chinese people and others around the world. Home and family was the main focus. To prepare for the festival/holiday, homes were cleaned to execute “Huiqi”. “Huiqi” is unlucky breaths, which could have collected over the years. Unlucky breaths are arguments or doubts. They did this so they would have a “clean slate” for the New Year. Family’s put up scrolls with lucky messages on household gates also for good luck. They would set off fireworks and firecrackers to scare away and frighten any bad spirits. Elder people of families gave out money to children. These customs were meant to bring (good) luck and long life to the family. More towards the parents of the family. How the beloved Chinese New Year started was because of a monster named the Nian. The Nian would eat and capture villagers, but mostly children, of innocent towns. One year, the villagers decided on going into hiding from the Nian. Before the villagers went into hiding, an old man appeared in front of the villagers, saying he was staying the night. Once the monster came to the village, the old man set off fireworks to, successfully, scare away the Nian. Well, that is what I got about Chinese New Year, hope you enjoyed.

Nazi Concentration Camps By: Ella Dietrich - 6th Grade

In 6th grade writing, I researched the Holocaust for my non-fiction informational book. I learned

many facts about this time period. Even though this history is very hard to read, it is important to learn about so in the future we can prevent anything like this from happening again. If you are younger than 4th grade, you might choose to skip this article or read it with an adult.

In the Holocaust, the Nazis set up camps. Their overall goal was to rid the world of Jewish individuals. And these camps tried doing this. Once Hitler took his own life, he and the Nazis had killed over six million Jewish people. There were two main types of camps: work camps and death camps. The work camps were known as concentration camps or konzentrationslager in German. While the death camps were known as extermination camps or vernichtungslager in German. They also had labor camps and prisons, but there were less of them. Who Was Put Where? Many types of people were targeted in the Holocaust, and most of the people captured didn’t fit in the standards the Nazis believed in. The Nazis didn’t like people who were different. Such as having a different ethnicity, religion, or political beliefs. Even though Jewish people were the main target, over 5 million other people were killed. That’s over 11 million people killed because of one man's hatred against Jewish people. Since individuals who were Jewish were the most hated, they were either immediately sent to death camps or killed on the spot, though some proved themselves useful and went to work at concentration camps. Political prisoners, Jehovah's Witnesses, and others were sent to concentration camps. There were no gas chambers at the concentrations camps, so the ones who died were either killed by the Nazis, starved to death, or died while working. German and Austrian Roma was also known as Gypsies, were sent to concentration camps. Most of the Roma killed were women and children because they were seen to be useless. Romani men, women, and children were confined together in a separate camp. On the night of August 2, 1944, a big group of Roma were gassed in the destruction of the "Gypsy family camp." There were also other family camps, like the Czech family camp, which was for families from Czechoslovakia. Family camps were only a thing because the German Red Cross was inspecting all the camps. After the Red Cross said they weren’t doing any more inspections, they went through the people and decided who’d stay alive and who’s been gassed. Useful went to one side, useless to the other. What Happened Inside? There were hundreds of concentration camps throughout Germany occupied the land. These camps had very little food, even though there was some to spare. After morning roll call the prisoners would be given their morning ‘meal,’ which consisted of something the Nazis liked to call ‘tea.’ For lunch, they’d eat watery soup, and if they were lucky, they might just find a potato peel or tiny slice of a turnip. In the evening, the prisoners would receive a small piece of black bread. This tiny piece of bread is supposed to last them throughout the morning and until lunch, so some people would hide the bread with them as they slept and eat it before roll call in the morning. Mealtime was the most important part of these peoples’ days. How much, and what they ate determined if they lived or not. When they got to the camps, Nazi soldiers cut off all of their hair, took their belongings, and gave them striped pajamas. Now onto the daily routine. First thing in the morning, the Nazi soldiers would wake up everyone from their barracks and make them stand in lines for several hours for the daily morning roll call. This roll call happened every

morning, it could be snowing or raining, but this roll call would go on no matter what the weather was. At roll call, lists of work and prisoners would be called out. The number of prisoners would be counted, as well. Even before the call, around 2,000 prisoners at a time would go to the bathroom facilities, these facilities had up to 100 holes in the ground that were supposed to be toilets. After roll call, the prisoners were sent off to work. The jobs but the prisoners did depend on the type of camp they were staying in. Some prisoners worked inside the camps doing smaller jobs. Others would travel outside of the camp to do jobs for farmers or in other factories the Nazis owned. A few jobs the prisoners had been to harvest crops, make bombs, and move all types of things to different places. Little mistakes could be deadly to the prisoners. Missing a button on your shirt could get you killed. In the world today, we don’t realize what we have. Don’t take even the smallest things for granted. Like mentioned earlier, it is important to learn this history so we can prevent it in the future. -Bibliography Wikipedia (2019, January). Concentration Camps. Retrieved from Wikipedia

Book Reviews Jordan and Kat - 5th Grade

Bridge To Terabithia By: Katherine Paterson

I will be reviewing Bridge to Terabithia, By Katherine Paterson. If you love a good

friendship story and an adventure story you should read this. This book also shows

people standing up for each other. It shows that two people that are very different can

become the best of friends.

In the book, a boy named Jess meets a girl that’s new in the neighborhood. Little

did he know, that she would be his best friend. They did most everything together after

they met they go through many adventures until something happens...

The book is very detailed and interesting I wouldn’t recommend to kids under

the age of 8 because it has some cuss words in it but nothing too bad. The book is a true

story and is very happy but it leaves you at a cliffhanger. I think it is very good and

would recommend it to people who like fantasy books and adventure. There also is a

movie about it.

Mr. Feiker’s Corner

What should you do if you don't understand something? This is a very complex question and the answer can vary depending on the person. A lot of students will feel comfortable asking the teacher right away and having them re-teach or explain the lesson. If this doesn’t work for you, or you are a little nervous, then wait until you can approach your teacher individually and ask them to then assist you. If you are still having a little trouble understanding or still uncomfortable you could always ask your parents or a peer for assistance. Just remember Never Give Up! Why do clowns have red noses?

They are good for honking. Just kidding. According to Samantha Volz (click here for more) the red nose is used to make that feature of the clown stand out in a funny way. The red color really pops when matched up with the white face of the clown. The red color is bright and contrasts the white, so it is easy to see.
