DID HE REALLY JUST SAY INDULGENCE?

Yes, he did. Joseph Kwiatkowski, our Liturgist and Music Director, is supposed to tell everyone at Mass this

weekend that a Plenary Indulgence is possible through a pious expression of the Way of the Cross. That of course includes coming to our Stations on Friday at 7 PM in the Church or at least participating online if you are not able to be present. There are some other requirements as well, but I suppose some review and explanation may be needed. We believe in Purgatory. What is Purgatory? Purgatory is a temporary situation for souls which are going to be saved but are not quite ready for heaven yet. Even those in a state of Grace, meaning forgiven of all mortal sins, can still have an attachment to sin. This attachment may grow weaker but it is still there. That heart is not yet configured to Jesus yet. That is the gift of Purgatory. Purgatory is how our hearts and souls get configured to Jesus, eliminating all the attachments and appetites for sin. As we continue on our journey of discipleship, we pray and work with God to conform ourselves to Jesus and, pray Jesus, to forgo the need of Purgatory. This can happen through redemptive suffering, prayer, and acts of true charity/love. Think of today’s Gospel. Jesus is Transfigured before Peter, James, and John in dazzling white. I don’t know about you, but my Baptismal garment is clean (state of Grace) but has some imperfections that are not configured to Jesus’ garments...YET. If it is not able to be done in my lifetime, but I need to try and do my part, Purgatory will make it spotless in the life to come. Purgatory will restore my garment to Jesus’ dazzling white. Jesus, in another act of radical mercy, even gave Peter and Apostles the ability to bind and loosen (see Matthew 16:19). The Church, deriving its authority from Peter and the Apostles, has declared that there are means to achieve the reduction (partial) or entire removal (plenary) of the necessity of Purgatory. These means are through an indulgence. An indulgence uses the treasury of Graces that the Church has access to and applies it to the purification of hearts and souls. An indulgence is centered around acts of prayer, penance, and charity. There are necessary conditions for receiving a plenary indulgence for doing any of the prescribed works. They are:

Sacramentally confess your sins

Receive Holy Communion. (“It is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required”)

Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. One Our Father and one Hail Mary fully satisfies this.

There is actually one more: You must “have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin.” For a great article on Lenten indulgences go to the National Catholic Register article, “4 Ways to Gain a Plenary Indulgence Daily During Lent. https://www.ncregister.com/blog/4-ways-to-gain-a-plenary-indulgence-daily-during-lent Please know that all the explanations provided are written by me; for the best explanations go to the sources. Purgatory is explained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (the book or online) paragraphs 1030-1032 and indulgences are explained in paragraph 1471. To me, we need to celebrate all the various means, Jesus has provided for us in His unfathomable mercy. Purgatory and indulgences are more gifts that our generous God has bestowed upon us that we do not deserve. It makes me want to shout, “JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU!” All Blessings to You! Jim Tokarsky
