DON’T BE ANXIOUS

People have, it seems, a natural penchant for

misplaced emphasis on unimportant things. They

can easily get caught up with what they’re hav-

ing for dinner or what they will wear.

Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refo-

cus on what is really important. What I shall

wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing

surgery or chemotherapy. What’s for dinner is

immaterial to those living through grief or unem-

ployment.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry.

He doesn’t say, “Don’t eat. Don’t cook. Don’t

buy clothes.” He says, “Don’t worry.” Jesus asks

us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let

go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust

and Jesus reminds us that “Your heavenly Father

knows” all that you need (Matthew 6:32).

NEW VIDEO STUDY for LENT LOOK what is being OFFERED for our LENTEN Growth! Starting March 3 for all six Friday mornings dur-ing Lent (following the School Mass around 9:15-9:20 in the Antonian Room) Catechist Martha Paetzold will facili-tate a video teaching on the book by Bishop Robert Barron entitled "The Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues." For 1 hour each week we will look at the 8 topics, using the Catechism and a teacher guide w/ questions for dis-cussion. Some topics include Pride - Humility, Anger - Forgiveness, Envy - Admiration, Laziness or Sloth - Zeal, Asceticism - Gluttony, Lust - Chastity, and more. If you have questions, call Martha at 258-7701 or Janie at 364-6150. Cost? Your time, and heart for God. Sessions informal and friendly!

“The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” This week I had the task of being the sixth grade

substitute teacher in the morning. On one of the days they looks at the different types of psalms, the type that they

all seemed to have an experience with is the Lament. Much like this Sunday’s reading from Isaiah, he begins with a

lament. Much like the old HeeHaw song, “Gloom, despair, and agony on me, deep dark depression, excessive mis-

ery. If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all.” Too often than not we focus being forgotten or forsaken or at

least our perception of it, because of our focus on that little word, “me.” The forgotten is often the one who has done

the forgetting. Sorrow and strain, worry and despair leads to forgetfulness. In those moments our gaze tends to drift

towards ourselves and we forget the goodness of the Lord God. He never leaves the birds of the sky without their

needs, not the grass of the field without its glories. He does not forget his beloved sons and daughters.

WHY FAST? What does it mean to fast nowadays? Not too many years ago,

Catholics observed firm Church guidelines of what, when and how

to fast, down to the exact ounces of meat one was

permitted to eat. Fasting still involves cutting back on one’s food

and drink, but, particularly in cases where a person's health prohib-

its fasting, it may also involve “giving up” some

pleasure. Fasting as a practice is as old humanity. In the Old Testa-

ment, people fasted from food and water from

morning to evening so that God might grant

their wishes. They fasted to prepare for holy

war, as a sign of mourning, as a sign of re-

pentance, and in times of calamity and dis-

tress. Who fasted? A virtual list of who’s

who from the Bible: Moses, David, Elijah,

Esther, Daniel, Anna, Paul and the other

apostles. Jesus encouraged fasting, but he left

no specific regulations for his followers on how to fast. The regu-

lations on Lenten fast and abstinence are: FASTING: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, whose who

are 18 but not yet 60 are allowed only one full meal. Two

smaller meals are allowed as needed, but eating solid foods

between meals in not permitted.

ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT: Those who are 14 years of

age or older are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and

all the Fridays of Lent.

The church no longer attempts to prescribe Lenten practices in de-

tail. The above regulations simply highlight ash Wednesday, Good

Friday, and the other Fridays of Lent. The more

fundamental obligation is to make Lent a penitential season,

choosing practices that are adapted to one’s own circumstances.

MEN of the PARISH! WANT a CURE?

**Cure? you ask. For what? For those times you find your-

self sitting in the pew on weekends after hearing The Read-

ings proclaimed from The Word of God, and wondering to

yourselves "what did that mean?" "what do I

do with that?" "how does that apply to me or

my life?" "where does that Word take me this

week?" *The CURE: Get up early

on Tuesday mornings, meet with other men from

the parish to read & discuss the Readings of the coming week-

end to come to a better understanding. It is an informal setting

in the Antonian Room from 7-8 am over coffee and in true fel-

lowship. This can be, for you, a good & productive, if not holy

and healthy, time spent with God's Word! If you have ques-

tions, call Ernest Flood or Roger Albracht; they would be

happy to welcome you! NO AGE LIMIT or REQUIREMENT,

NO COST. Come!

you took it by mistake please return the

jacket to the church office, we would greatly

appreciate it.

We give a heartfelt thanks for all of

the prayers, Masses, visits, food, flowers

and acts of kindness and thoughtfulness

that were shown to our family during

Clarence’s illness and passing. The Mass of

resurrection was a beautiful service and we want to

especially thank the Eucharistic ministers, choir

members, lectors, ushers and altar servers for their

service. A special thank you to Father Tony for his

many visits to see Clarence when he could no

longer come to church.

A special thank you to the Bereavement

committee who cooked and served the dinner. We

thank all of the parishioners who brought salads and

desserts also. It was a wonderful time for the family

to get together and visit. The Holy Spirit is alive

and active in St. Anthony’s Parish!
