Meditation on the Prayer of St. Ephrem
O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of
sloth, despair, lust for power and idle talk. But give to me
your servant, the spirit of chastity, humility, patience and
love. O Lord and King, grant to me to see my own faults
and not to condemn my brother, for You are blessed for
ever and ever. Amen.
'O Lord and Master of my life…' Who is Lord and
Master of my life? Me? God? The ideas, slogans, and
choices of people around me? 'Take from me the spirit of
sloth…' The spirit of sloth refers to laziness, indifference,
or forgetfulness. Sloth is a strange laziness that pushes us
down rather than up. It's a 'what for' 'What's the use
of it' attitude that convinces us that no change is possible
or desirable. '…despair...' The word despair means
despondency or faint-heartedness. It also suggested
discouragement, being cowardly, and aversion to life,
and suicide of the soul. Am I easily discouraged? Do
I surrender within myself when I am frightened? Am I
cowardly in my faith? Do I arm myself for spiritual
combat with a rule of prayer in my daily life?
'…lust for power…' This is the spirit of self-importance,
the religion of me. The spirit of domination was the 3rd
temptation to which Jesus was subjected during his time of
fasting in the wilderness. Christ dismissed Satan with these
words; "You shall worship the Lord your God and him
alone shall you serve." Lust for power makes an idol of the
self. Do I seek to manipulate others? Do I make myself to
be feared by others? '…and idle talk…' In a word, gossip.
This is talk that attacks the social fabric

Зібралося багато людей, і забракло навіть місця коло дверей. Чотири мущини принесли на ношах спараліжованого але через масу людей не могли дістатися до Божественного лікаря. Тому розібрали дах дому і спустили на мотузах спараліжованого перед Ісуса. Ісус побачив їх віру і сказав до хорого:, "Сину, відпускаються тобі твої гріхи".... Та, щоб ви знали, що Чоловічий Син має владу на землі відпускати гріхи, і промовив Ісус до хорого:"Встань, візьми своє ліжко і йди до свого дому" (Мт. 9:6). Цей самий Христос - Бог і сьогодні йде до наших Капернаумів, зупиняється у Божих храмах і по наших домах. Він наш учитель, світло, правда і життя. Він всемогучий лікар на всі недуги душі і тіла нашого. Але свої ласки й дари дає Він тим, у кого є старання, щоб їх у Нього отримати. Нас всіх закликає св.Церква до Покаяння. Кондак другої неділі Великого Посту виразно каже нам: "Тепер настав час ділання, перед дверима є суд: встаньмо у пості, принесім сльози жалю з милостинями і скажім, наших гріхів є більше, як морського піску. Але прости, Помічнику всіх, щоб ми приняли нетлінні вінці. Памятайте на Христові слова: "Ходіть, доки маєте світло, щоб тьма не захопила вас", бо "Прийде ніч, коли ніхто з вас не зможе робити (Iв. 9:4). (cont. on pg. 3)

referring to all chatter, not only mine but the chatter of
others. Christ cautions us that we will render an account
"for every careless word" that we speak (Mt 12; 36). Have
I lied or gossiped? Have I maligned or slandered others?
Have I cursed anyone?
'But give me your servant, the spirit of chastity…' To be
chaste is to be pure in all thought and conduct, to be free of
all addictions, to be in communion with God's purity.
Chastity also means wholeness, sobriety, self-control,
moderation, discretion and overcoming all passions that
destroy life. Chastity is the wholeness of an interior
innocence. Chastity exists in marriage when there is an
integration of desire in a personal relationship marked by
self-giving love. Have I used and regarded others as sexual
objects? Have I damaged the spirit of chastity in myself by
looking at pornography? Have I dressed and behaved
modestly? '…humility…' Humility is self-knowledge and
poverty of spirit and meekness. It inspires an attitude of
listening and learning good counsel. Humility is not proud
or arrogant and welcomes correction. It is not a denial of
one's self but rather seeing me in relationship to God. Do
I boast about myself? Do I listen and learn? Do I accept
correction with gratitude?
'…patience…' Patience is calmly bearing or enduring
delay, disappointment, pain and sorrow. It is a deep
confidence in God's providence and the willingness to
persevere even in the face of loss and failure. It is a
realization that Christ is with us, no matter where we are
and no matter what we are going through. Do I imagine
that I am alone? That I am God-forsaken? Do I get angry
with others? Do I easily give up? '…and love…' "God so
loved the world that he sent his only-begotten Son," (Jn 3;
16) Love of its nature inspires whole-hearted giving, an
eagerness to serve, it is self-giving, and doing good for
others. Christ taught us to love not only our friends, but also
our enemies, for without love there is no way to overcome
enmity. Love is more than a sentiment; it is an attitude of
caring for the well-being and salvation of others. Do I put
my needs and desires first? Do I pray for those I fear and
hate? Do I help others, even if they are strangers?
'O Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults and not
to condemn my brother. For you are blessed forever and
ever. Amen.' We ask God to make us aware of our own
sins and faults and to judge others. At the Last Judgment
we will have to answer for our own sins, not the sins others
committed, except to the extent that others sinned because
we have sinned. Do I care more about what is wrong with
other people than what is wrong with me? Do I look down
on those who appear to have a life less ordered than mine?
Do I regard myself as being not so bad because there are
others who are worse?

His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar was not only the leader of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church and a candidate for the papal altar, but also most importantly, was one of the greatest moral authorities among all Ukrainians. He provided us with many words of wisdom which opened our eyes to profound truths, and which will survive throughout the ages. Here are a few: “Ukraine is not divided into the east and west. It is divided into those who love Ukraine, and those who do not.” “Do your job, that for which you have been called. Do it well, and not only for your own benefit, but rather do it together with others and for everyone’s benefit. In unity – there is strength.” “When you show a person through your actions “I trust you,” you open up the good in that person’s heart and cause them to change.” “A Leader – is a person who wants something more, and who knows what talents they have been blessed with. One who initiates positive actions, and awakens in those around them the desire to achieve their goals.” “A new generation is growing up, and we should insure that this new young generation, which by nature is pure and enthusiastic, remains that way and so it is not spoiled by old tendencies.” “May all be well with you. Remember, that love is the foundation of everything in the world. Let us be the oasis of love!“ May his memory be everlasting and bright!
