AAA Word From the Pastor
As we begin the Second Week of Lent, may I respectfully remind all Catholics who have reached
their 14th year are called ABSTAIN eating meat on the Fridays of Lent. On Good Friday, in addi-
tion to abstaining from meat, Catholics between the ages of 18 through 59 are also called to a day of
Fast on which we limit themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals. We are also called to vol-
untary acts of self denial such as attendance and participation in daily Mass, spiritual reading, praying
the Stations of the Cross, praying the Rosary, and performing deeds of mercy and kindness.
Just a reminder that on all the Fridays of Lent we pray the Stations of the Cross at 7:30 PM. Please
consider joining us as we follow the Lord on His way to Calvary. On Friday, March 23, we will have
our annual Soup Supper at 6:00 PM and following dinner, we will gather in the Church for the Sta-
tions at 7:30 PM. The soups are home made. If you would like to share your culinary expertise and
make a meatless soup, please contact the rectory. Hope you will join us for the supper.
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the musical presentation IT IS FINISHED on Sun-
day, March 3, 2018 at 3:00 PM in the Church. The presentation is by the Glen Mohr Chorale. The
Chorale has visited us in the past and their presentations are always spiritually moving and rewarding
experiences. IT IS FINISHED tells the story of the final hours of Our Lord's Passion through the
eyes of Pontius Pilate, Dismas the Good Thief, Judas and finally Veronica who wiped the face of Je-
sus. The presentation is one of Scripture and song. Reservations are not required and a voluntary col-
lection at the conclusion of the presentation.
Saturday, March 17 is the Feast of St. Patrick and on Monday, March 19 we celebrate the Feast of St.
Joseph. Last year, Deacon Chris Sisinni and Lori Krotz, along with help from their religion class, or-
ganized and prepared a delicious Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner with the traditional Italian desserts
to commemorate both feast days. Deacon Chris, Lori and their religion class are having a similar din-
ner on SATURDAY, MARCH 10 in the Parish Hall immediately following the 5:15 PM. All parish-
ioners are invited to attend. Please see the flier with additional information and a reservation form
elsewhere in the bulletin. Preregistration is REQUIRED.
On Tuesday February 21, Bishop Barres announced that Pope Francis has transferred Bishop Robert
Coyle, an auxiliary Bishop for the archdiocese of the Military, back home to the Diocese of Rockville
Centre, as an auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Rockville Centre to work with Bishop Barres, Bish-
op Brennan and Bishop Andrzej. Bishop Coyle's parents, Robert and Kathryn Coyle are parishioners
of HNJ. We welcome Bishop Coyle back home to Long Island. I already invited Bishop Coyle to vis-
it us at HNJ and to celebrate Mass for us once he is back on Long Island and before his schedule be-
comes filled with appointments, meetings and other responsibilities.

FOCUS: We long to know the will of God, looking for
obvious signs or instructions. Despite our efforts, we
often fall short. As we acknowledge our failings, we
come to God asking for healing and forgiveness. In
the first reading, Abraham is ready to demonstrate
his deep faith in the promises God gave him. In the second reading, Paul speaks about the generosity of God
the Father, who gave up his only son for our salvation. In the Gospel, Jesus is transfigured before Peter, James,
and John, revealing the fullness of his divine identity as God’s beloved son. Published by Franciscan Media

Catholic Ministries Appeal 2018
The 2018 Catholic ministries Appeal is the yearly appeal which supports the many Diocesan ministries, ser-
vices and programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties. In fact, no other organization or group on Long Island pro-
vides the breath and depth of spiritual and social services to so many individuals as does our Diocese. The
theme this year is “We are the Hand’s of Christ’s Mercy”. In his letter, St. James asks “If your brother or sister
is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled’ without
giving them the things needed, what does it profit?” Your support to the 2018 Appeal helps to care for God’s
people in many ways, for example by providing affordable and safe housing for seniors and physically chal-
lenged adults, food and clothing for those in need, training our seminarians and the respect life initiatives which
defend the dignity of every human person.
