dard trees and demand a levelplaying ground. I agree withthem. That's why over the pastfive years, we have modern-ized our entire operation. Istarted with quality throughtrickle irrigation and deerfences. As production went up,I purchased specialized plat-form equipment that helpswith the planting, growing anddigging of all of our trees.

"Watch the grade," I tell myemployees. "It’s me who visitsthe apple grower to inspect hisnew planting. I know they lookgood in bundles but rememberhe'll see each tree individually, everyday for years and years. He's a perfectionist and YOUare too!"

This spring, I'm expectinganother new piece of equip-

ment, a multi-trek tractorwhich is used in weed control, root pruning, fertilizing, culti-vating, rotatiling and spraying. With all the tasks it’s capableof, it's not cheap, but I'm sureit will take our little family farmto the standard that is equal toor better than many largercompanies in the US and Hol-land. We can and will com-pete.

Our apple growers are doingthe same with their operationsthrough much higher densitygrowing systems that can gettheir newer and better vari-eties to the shelf faster. I'mbetting you are going to eatthese apples, not becausethey are local, but because ourindustry is meeting the chal-lenge of competing with globalmarkets.

by John Walker Jr.

J&L Walker Farms, a dairyoperation located five kilome-tres east of Aylmer, has beenin the family name since 1962.In 1996, Jon Walker Jr. andwife Linda bought the homefarm from his father John. It iscurrently being managed byJohn Jr., who is Jon andLinda's son. Previous to 1996,the operation was locatednear London under the prefixFuturecrest.

The operation breeds andraises its own replacementheifers on the farm and on afeedlot located in Richmond.Heifers are raised at the feed-lot until close to calving whenthey are moved back to thehome farm.

The operation has expandedto a herd size of 1,100 milkcows. Milking occurs twice aday at the home farm, as wellas at a new 50-stall rotary fa-cility, built in 2008 for 1,000+milking cattle. The facility is lo-cated just north of Talbot LineEast on Carter Road.

J&L Walker Farms plans onincorporating more technologyinto the operation to increaseefficiencies. Recently a roboticfeed pusher was implementedto allow the feed to be acces-sible to the cattle at all times, thus raising milk production.

Such innovations will con-tribute to the farm's ability tofurther expand its milking op-eration while providing a com-fortable, healthy environmentfor our cattle in the years tocome. J&L Walker Farms con-tinues to work hard to main-tain the family business andsustain it for future genera-tions.

The emphasis onbuying local hashelped McSmithsOrganic Farm thriveby Cathy McGregor-Smith

Gary Smith and Cathy Mc-Gregor-Smith are consideredpioneers of organic farming. They both “quit their govern-ment jobs at Canada Agricul-ture to go back to the land inthe 1980s.”

McSmiths Organic Farmhas been certified organicsince 1984. The diversity oftheir mixed farm has pro-vided a year-round income.Cathy and Gary work to-gether every day and recog-nized early in theirrelationship that each hastheir own forte.

Cathy‘s strength is in inten-sive vegetable productionusing various styles of green-houses to grow fresh, flavourful and unique vari-eties of lettuces, tomatoesand greens. She enjoysgrowing them for customersat the St. Thomas Horton

Farmers’ Market.A true organic farm needs a

livestock component to givefertility back to the croppedland. Gary grows all the or-ganic grain needed by thelivestock. McSmiths has apasturing beef herd as wellas several hundred layinghens. In recent years, Mc-Smiths has been known fortheir Organic Broiler Chick-

ens.Over the last three decades,

McSmiths has watched thedemand for organic productsincrease dramatically. The‘local’ movement has alsohelped Gary and Cathy makea living on their small farm. They are pleased to see thatthe next generation hasstarted its own direct farmmarketing operation.

“Stick-to-it-ness” is a virtuethat McSmiths applies everyseason.

Hall of Fame inductionBack to the land

Ever wonder why old barns are usuallyred in color? Red is (or, perhaps, was) apopular color for barns due not to itscolor shade but for its usefulness. Many years ago, choices for paints,

sealers and other building materials didnot exist. Farmers had to be resourcefulin finding or making a paint that wouldprotect and seal the wood on theirbarns. Hundreds of years ago, manyfarmers would seal their barns with lin-seed oil, which is an orange-colored oilderived from the seeds of the flax plant. To this oil, they would add a variety ofthings, most often milk and lime, butalso ferrous oxide, or rust. Rust wasplentiful on farms and because it killedfungi and mosses that might grow onbarns, was very effective as a sealant. Itturned the mixture red in color. When paint became more available,

many people chose red paint for theirbarns in honor of tradition.

OFA is asking governmentto suspend use ofindustrial wind turbinesin rural Ontarioby Mark Wales, President, Ontario Federation of Agriculture

In January 2012, the Ontario Federation ofAgriculture (OFA) took a hard look at the con-cerns we had with wind turbines. We have al-ways been concerned with the price paid forwind power and the fact that it is not dis-patchable – it is not stored for use duringpeak demand periods, making it highly ineffi-cient. This was noted by Ontario’s AuditorGeneral in his recent Annual Report in Decem-ber 2011.

In addition, our technical concerns with re-gard to setback issues, induced current andnoise impacts remain unaddressed.

OFA believes that the amendments to thePlanning Act made under the authority of theGreen Energy Act are not having the desiredeffect of providing for good planning. Removalof municipal input into industrial wind turbineprojects has alienated the rural populationand ignored competing community needs andpolicies.

All of these issues have been emphasizedclearly by our members. Over the past fewweeks we have clearly heard OFA memberstell us of health concerns, concerns over theloss of farmland, encumbrances on their farmproperties and many more issues related tothe imposition of wind turbines across ourrural landscape.

Most disconcerting of all is the impact wind

turbines are having on the relationshipsacross rural communities. When wind devel-opments come to a community neighboursare pitted against neighbours. The issue of in-dustrial wind turbine development is preoc-cupying the rural agenda.

OFA is telling the Ontario government ourmembers have had enough. Rural Ontariocannot continue to be torn apart by wind tur-

bines. The province needs to immediatelysuspend any further developments until ourfarm families and rural residents can be as-sured their interests are protected.

On behalf of rural Ontario, OFA needs to seethe government enable community involve-ment in wind developments to ensure localplanning issues and priorities are addressed. We need wind power to be priced right andmade dispatchable so it can be used when weneed it, rather than selling it at a loss duringthe nighttime. We need health and nuisanceconcerns addressed immediately and weneed serious studies done on reasonable set-back distances for the newer and larger tur-bines being planned.

The onus is on our provincial government toensure the interests of rural Ontarians areprotected. Our members are clearly telling usnow that they are not. There are very seriousconcerns with wind energy as it is currentlyrolling out.

OFA supports green energy – Ontario needsa reliable, affordable source of renewable en-ergy for our future. But we all need to work toensure that green energy projects will respectconcerns for noise, community involvementand price, balanced against the effective pro-vision of that power.

Wind power versus

rural power
