From The Rabbi's Desk

In last week’s פרשה, when בני ישראל were preparing to receive the תורה, weare told ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר–andIsrael (singular) encamped in front ofthe mountain. Rashi famouslycomments that the use of the singularwas appropriate since they were כאישlike one person with one–אחד בלב אחדheart. Complete unity had been achieved. This occurs again in this week’s פרשה where it is written ויען כלהעם קול אחד ויאמרו כל הדברים אשר דבר נעשה (פרק כד and the people replied in one voice and said -פסוק ג)all that has been said, we will do, indicating one nation speaking with one voice. In light of this it is difficult to understand why in the next פסוק we are told that erected twelve monuments, one for each of the משהtribes of Israel. If the people were unified in purpose, why should they be separated into twelve discrete units?Rav Moshe Sternbuch explains that even though everyone shared the same goal of serving Hashem, each tribe had its own talents and abilities, and

therefore they each had a different approach to reaching this ultimate goal. No one approach is right or wrong, but each tribe needed to find their own pathto Hashem’s service. This is not only true with different tribes; it is true of different individuals. Just like we all look different, we each have different talents and capabilities. We were created uniquely, since we each have something singular to contribute to the world and to Hashem’s service. An appreciation of our differences and our common goals will lead to true unity and the ultimate redemption.
