2020 Shinnen Kai & Keiro Kai Special Awardees The following are introductions as presented by John Ikegami
and Wes Shimoda at the 2020 Shinnen Kai and Keiro Kai for VJCC Person of the Year 2019 and Lifetime Achievement:
Jason Kunisaki has been a contributing writer for the VJCC Community News since his junior year at Culver City High School. He was a 2013 VJCC Scholarship recipient. Over the years, Jason has written a number of articles chronicling his college application process, his freshman year, studying abroad and reflections on four years of college.
Jackie Kittaka has exemplified the Venice Japanese Community Center's culture through her tireless dedication of time and resources toward the Center. The Summer Festival sushi-making operation is one of the most challenging fundraising activities for the VJCC; however, Jackie took on the operation in 2019 and made it one of the most successful ones in recent years. She is also involved in the Senior Nutrition Program, from serving to organizing and leading the semi-annual Las Vegas trip for the area-wide seniors. For all that she has done for the VJCC, Jackie has been named VJCC 2019 Person of the Year.
The Venice Japanese Community Center honors Mark Morimoto for his dedication to the youth at the VJCC. He has been a coach for the Venice Youth Council and both an Assistant Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster for Troop 764. Under Mark's leadership, Troop 764 has been very visible around the VJCC, providing volunteering help when needed, such as the annual Shinnen Kai & Keiro Kai, where the Troop provides the majority of the man/boy power of setting up, cleaning up and serving for the event. Without this help, the event may not be possible. Hopefully the new leadership of Troop 764 will be able to continue with what Mark started and fill his big shoes at the VJCC. The VJCC is very fortunate and appreciates all his work for so many years; therefore, Mark has been named VJCC 2019 Person of the Year.
PERSON OF THE YEAR 2019 AWARDS: Jackie Kittaka & Mark Morimoto
8 Days, 24 Weeks and 81 Months by Jason Kunisaki
Dear Kobe, For so many children like me who grew up through the Venice Japanese Community Center’s basketball program, we are fortunate. Our community provides an opportunity for kids to play basketball where making friends and learning teamwork is more important than winning. With our supportive parents, coaches and community members, your influence elevated us and our love for the game of basketball to another level.
From the time my teammates and I were five-year-old Sure Shot players, you kept us engaged with basketball as we watched you knock down game-winning 3-pointers night after night. Then in our own games, we dreamed we could make that same exact shot, even as small, elementary school players. With each shot we took, each pass we made and each game we played, it was your efforts as a Laker that gave

Greetings from VJCC!I have been a member of the VJCC since my days playing basketball, but I am still amazed at volunteers who make the VJCC such a wonderful place. Last month, I witnessed all the volunteers, sponsors and donors who made the 2020 Shinnen Kai & Keiro Kai a success. I wanted to especially thank all the scouts and parents of Boy Scout Troop 764 who compose the majority of the volunteers at the event to honor the VJCC seniors. I am pleased to announce another change at the VJCC which we hope will improve the online experience for the VJCC membership. Last month, we activated the new online donation webpage which allows users to donate to a specific VJCC Fund (100-Year, Legacy, Building, etc.) using their credit card or via an Electronic Funds Transfer from a bank account. The online donation feature is another recent addition to the VJCC website, which—per prior newsletter announcements--included online membership renewal and online access to the VJCC Community News. Next year, the VJCC will celebrate its 100-Year Anniversary! In connection with this momentous event, the VJCC will have a pre-celebration by hosting the 2nd Annual VJCC Sake Social to be held in the VJCC Gym on Saturday, February 22, starting at 5:30 p.m. The evening will be an opportunity to see old friends, meet new friends, and taste unique sake and delicious food pairings by Aki’s Restaurant. For entertainment, we are honored to have the VJCC’s own Brian Yamamoto perform; you may remember Brian who performed at the VJCC Grateful Crane Concert in September. See the flyer included in this month’s newsletter. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased online at VJCCSAKESOCIAL2020.EVENTBRITE.COM. Thank you for your support of the VJCC and I hope to see you at one of the future VJCC events.

us excellence to strive for, both individually and as a team. Outside of basketball, you attained extraordinary results through your tenacious approach to perfecting your craft. You demonstrated the incredible amount of sacrifice and dedication required to achieve excellence in our pursuits. This is what separates you as a role model. We thank you for sharing your Mamba Mentality, the foundational framework to excel in each of our own endeavors. Your determination to overcome any physical and
mental obstacle explains why it is so hard to believe you are gone. We thought you were invincible. If a ruptured Achilles could not keep you down, then nothing could! But the fact is that you are no longer with us in person and that is a reality we may never, ever accept. Not in “8” days, “24” weeks, or “81” months from now. In “8” days, the pain of your absence will be soothed by the wonderful memories of your legendary battles on the court. Every one of your game-winning buzzer beaters, 3-point daggers, and tenacious defensive efforts will remind us of what made us first fall in love with you and the game of basketball. In “24” weeks, as young girls and boys practice your patented fade away in the VJCC gym, your valuable teachings of work ethic, perseverance and determination will reverberate through our community, reminding us of the tenacity it takes to achieve our own goals. In “81” months, we will still hold tight to the inspiration you gave us through your relentless drive for excellence. Equipped with your teachings, we will energetically push to new heights on our own VJCC basketball teams, within our community, and in our own lives. Thank you for your inspirations, GOAT.
