Zechariah: Your Kingdom

Come!

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on

February 26th. This year join us as

we journey through the book of

Zechariah. The prophet’s chief

concern is God’s kingdom. Throughout all fourteen chapters, Zechariah joyfully

and profoundly announces that God’s kingdom is coming through Jesus Christ

our Lord.

The book of Zechariah abounds with stunning portraits of our Savior. Jesus

serves as the prophet’s Interpreting Messenger throughout the first six

chapters. Zechariah calls Jesus a “Shoot” (3:8; 6:12), “Servant” (3:8) and

“Stone” (3:9). It is in his last six chapters, though, that the prophet describes

Jesus in much more compelling ways. Jesus is righteous and humble (9:9). The

blood of his covenant sets prisoners free (9:11). He is the church’s Cornerstone,

Tent Peg and Battle Bow (10:4). Then, in a dramatic twist of fate, Christ is

detested (11:8), sold for thirty pieces of silver (11:12), struck so his sheep scatter

(13:7) and finally pierced and killed (12:10). In the end, however, God’s

kingdom comes—finally and permanently, in pristine beauty (14:9, 16, 17).

Sermon Themes for Lent 2020

Ash Wednesday “First Things First” (Zechariah 1:1–6)

Lent 1 “It’s Tool Time!” (Zechariah 1:18–21)

Lent 2 “Silencing Satan” (Zechariah 3:1–10)

Lent 3 “Who Will Take the Garbage Out?” (Zechariah 5:5–11)

Lent 4 “First Secure Your Own Oxygen Mask” (Zechariah 8:20–23)

Lent 5 “The Redeemer’s Refinery” (Zechariah 13:1–2)

Palm Sunday “Expectations Meet Reality” (Zechariah 9:9–10)

Maundy Thursday “Covenant Blood” (Zechariah 9:11–12)

Good Friday “God is Dead!” (Zechariah 12:10–14)

Easter “All Things New!” (Zechariah 14:8–11)

This Lent, rejoice, for God’s kingdom comes to you—through Jesus our Lord!

In His Service

Live JOYfully! Love JOYfully!

with Pastor Black

Chapter 9 “The Joy of Family”. Just reading this chapter brings back some memories for me and I bet it does

for you. Either about the BB gun or the sitting around the table laughing and telling stories with family.

Chapter 10 “The Joy of Humor”. I love a good laugh. There have been times in my life that I have laughed so

hard, that my wife would get mad at me if I finished that comment. TMI Pastor. It feels really good to sit with

really anyone and have a good laugh. I pray by now that you are Living JOYfully! and Loving JOYfully! I pray

that the JOY that is alive in you is easily working in and through your lives. Remember that you may be the

only JOY that someone get today, this week, this month, or maybe this year, so make it God’s JOY bursting

out of you for others to see, hear, and feel. Let’s share together and build together the love, hope, and JOY of

Jesus Christ with others. Next time we will look at chapter 11 “The Joy of Worship” and chapter 12 “The Joy of

Life”.

If you are just now joining us in this journey we are reading through the book, “A Little Book on JOY”, by

Matthew C. Harrison. Please read along with me pages 80-97 for next time. Feel free to dig deeper by going

through the questions at the end of each chapter.

Reading chapter 9 brought back so many memories that there was a smile on my face for a long while. I could

tell story after story that I remember about times like these. Stories about the BB gun that I had and stories

about sitting with family and talking and laughing with each other for hours. Oh what JOY times like that

would bring and still do. I hope that you experienced times like this that brought JOY to you and your family. I

hope that you are still having times like this with your family that fills everyone involved with JOY. Now take

that JOY and share it with others so that they can take it and share that JOY with others. Let’s look at some of

the questions from chapter 9 page 70.

Q1 – How does the re-telling of the episode with the BB gun illustrate the joy of life together in

the family? There could have been m any different outcom es on the BB gun story, but it is good

to expect mistakes, forgive those involved, learn from them, and also to laugh at them. As I am sure we all

know, Life Happens, it is how we deal with it that makes the memories in our lives. Remember to live JOYfully

and also to love JOYfully those around you.

Q3 – Read Psalm 127:3-5. How does David in the Psalms describe the joy of children? Children

are a gift from God, they are an inheritance, a reward. Take JOY in them.

Q4 – Read Psalm 128:3 & 6. How are grandchildren a joy and blessing from the Lord?

Grandchildren are an extension and tribute to the parents of their parents. I do not know yet but I have heard

that grandchildren are the greatest gift that children can give their parents. I pray that your children and

grandchildren bring you much JOY.

Chapter 10 really opens our eyes to see the true humor in life. We need to open up to it and enjoy the time in

laughter with others. NOT AT OTHERS EXPENCE! But we can laugh with other and even at ourselves.

Having the JOY of Jesus Christ in our lives will help us to see the humor that He has placed in our lives. Be

willing to laugh at yourself from time to time and see the JOY that it can bring to others. Let’s go to our

questions from chapter 10 page 78.

Q1 – What is the spiritual significance of humor? Because of the security of the Gospel, the

certainty of the resurrection, we are free to rejoice, to laugh, and to celebrate. This Gospel is the free gift from

God for you.

Q4 – How did Luther’s understanding of Christian freedom allow him to embrace humor and

use humor? Know ing w hat lies ahead allow s us to laugh at the present. I think that Luther felt

the same way. While reading this book I see that Luther had a very funny side to him.

As we continue deeper into this book I can see that JOY is all around us. We do have to open our eyes and see

it. God gives us so many “JOYS” in life. My hope for each one of you is that you are able to see the JOY that he

has place in and around you each and every day. Share in the JOY of others and your JOY will increase. Please

continue to look over the other questions and don’t forget the “Something to Think About” as well. If you have

any questions please call or text me at 806-881-5027, or email me at [email protected],. Please

Of the three things a person is not to talk about in polite company – religion, politics, and money – the church is called, in one way or another, to talk about all three. Perhaps this is the

reason why teaching about stewardship often seems to be an afterthought. It’s something that happens only out of necessity when financial constraints are already nipping at the heels. There is a more excellent way. Stewardship shouldn’t be the kind of teaching that comes up only when there is a financial crunch. It should be part and parcel of the ongoing instruction of Christians as they live out their faith in their vocations – members of their family, their society, and their church. This teaching touches upon every facet of our lives; it stakes a claim upon our time, our presence, our prayers, and our possessions. Stewardship begins with the acknowledgment that we are stewards. A steward is a manager of someone else’s possessions. In Christian stewardship, we recognize, according to the

Apostles’ Creed, that God is the owner of all things as the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier. And in His fatherly divine goodness and mercy, He gives us what is His to manage here below. The principal virtue for stewards is faithfulness. 1st Cor. 4:2 Stewards must manage that which belongs to the owner according to the owner’s wishes. That is what it means to be faithful in stewardship That raises a question: How are Christian stewards to be faithful in their managing of what God has entrusted to them to manage? In other words, what are the specific duties of a Christian steward? This depends upon what God has revealed in His Word for each of our vocations in life as those in a family (fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, children), society (governors or citizens), and the church (pastors or laity). The Table of Duties from Luther’s Small Catechism lays this out in helpful and orderly way. Let’s look just at what the laity (hearers as it is labeled in the catechism) owe their pastors:

(1 Cor. 9:14) , Gal. 6:6-7 , 1 Tim. 5: 17-18 , 1 Thess.5:12-13, Heb. 13: 17

We can see that the Lord commands hearers to support the work of the ministry with the gifts God endowed them – their time, their presence, their prayers, and their possessions. This is the means by which God blesses His people with His gifts: the ministry with the support of those whom they serve, and the hearers with the work of the ministry. We are to give regularly , proportionally, generously of our first fruit, with a spirit of eagerness Earnestness , cheerfulness, and Love . All of this teaching is set forth squarely within the context of stations to which God calls us. This is always appropriate for the church to speak because it instructs God’s people in how they are to live out their faith as His stewards under those who are created, redeemed, and sanctified by Him.
