Happy February, friends!

This month I’d like to

spotlight a nationwide

ministry that is near and

dear to my heart as it

celebrates its 30-year

Anniversary: Souper Bowl

of Caring. I am excited

that our Greystone Youth

Group will be helping us all focus on this year’s theme to “tackle

hunger!” along with hosting our February Monthly Mission and

Communion Rail Recipient.

What exactly is Souper Bowl of Caring? In 1990, Souper Bowl of

Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: “Lord,

even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of

those without a bowl of soup to eat.”

Since then, more than $150 million has been generated for local charities

across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a

powerful movement transforming the time around the Big Game (Super

Bowl) into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving.

Through this mission, young people learn to make a positive difference

in the world as they collect food, raise money and serve at hunger-relief

charities and show caring and compassion in local communities across

the country.

So how do we help? For starters, each person is asked to please bring a

$1 bill and one can of non-perishable food on Souper Bowl Sunday of

Caring, February 2nd. All month, on behalf of our Youth Group, we will

be collecting monetary donations and non-perishable food for our Youth

Group’s Charity of Choice: The Harbor.

Beautiful work based on the scripture of Matthew 25, I invite us all to

pick up an extra item or two and be ready to make a special donation in

our Communion offering on February 2nd – as we remember the words of

Jesus: “Assuredly, I say to you, in as much as you did it to one of the

least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

I look forward to the wonderful February mission about to unfold! To

God be the glory.

Love, Pastor T

Faith-Sharing

An Exciting,

Church-Wide Bible Study

Continues

Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m.

It's not too late to join our Wednesday night Bible Study, "Faith-Sharing!" Each week, a wonderful time together is led by one of our Greystone brothers and sisters in Christ. Maxie Dunnam wrote these words of support for our weekly Study: “Theology is here, challenge is here, and concern is here that the world would know Jesus Christ.” Join us at 6:00 p.m. each Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, February 26th, our Lenten Journey to the Cross of Christ begins as we observe the Imposition of Ashes on Ash Wednesday. After our evening meal (at 5:15 p.m.) we will join together for a special Ash Wednesday Service at 6:00 p.m. There will be no Bible Study on this night. Please join us as we remember the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus and share together in the beginning of our Lenten Season.

Greystone UMC Children & Youth News In my article last month, I mentioned that our Youth and Children were recognized by The

Harbor Church as the longest continually-serving group to ever serve there. While other

churches may have had a longer association with The Harbor, no other group has been as

dedicated as our youth to serve on an ongoing basis. Our children have learned a lot from

this experience. Not only have they learned how to serve outside the walls of the Church;

they have met people from all walks of life. Through their encounters with The Harbor

congregation, they have witnessed peoples’ struggles, learned life lessons through their

testimonies, and celebrated with them in their victories.

Some of our youth help with the children while others stay in the worship service.

Afterwards, we all help serve food to the congregation. It is humbling to see the gratitude on

the faces of some of the people that come through the line. I consider it a privilege to be able

to serve alongside of our young people.

During February, the youth will once again be

leading a church-wide ministry opportunity called

Souper Bowl of Caring. In 1990, Souper Bowl of

Caring began with a simple prayer from a single

youth group: “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super

Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those

without a bowl of soup to eat.”

Since then, more than $150 million has been

generated for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become

a powerful movement that transforming the time around the Big Game, into the nation’s

largest celebration of giving and serving.

February 2 is Souper Bowl Sunday! We have a special service planned to kickoff this ministry

opportunity and will collect non-perishable food throughout the month. Please feel free to

donate as much and as often as the Lord leads you.

Don’t forget:

Sunday School at 9:00 am with Mrs. Patti Walker.

Wednesday night Stick Ministry practice.

The activity time will be filled with a few games with our own “Greystone” twist so plan to join in the fun as well provide a joy-filled afternoon with our guests from the 4 group homes. The donation list for our menu items will be out soon so you can see how you would like to participate.

Thank you again for making the Christmas party such a beautiful expression of love.

"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's Amore!"

"Love me tender, love me sweet. Never let me go. You have made my life complete, and I love you so."

"Looking for love in all the wrong places, looking for love in too many faces."

I wondered how many love songs had been written, so I did a quick Google search and found this little tidbit of trivia, “It has been estimated that over 100 million love songs have been recorded.” Recorded. Wow! I wonder how many songs never made it into the recording studio. Whatever the total number of songs written is, it is obvious there is not a shortage of people trying to define what love is and what it means. The problem with the world’s method of finding love or being in love is that the word love has been so perverted and misused, it really means anything you want it to mean at any given moment. Regardless if the words that come from Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, Johnny Lee or any number of artists, the end result is the same - their version of love misses the mark. But, love songs sell albums so they will keep being written and recorded.

Last Sunday evening, our Prayers & Praise service started back (Sunday evenings at 5:30) and one of the songs we sang was, “You Won’t Relent.” If you were not there, I am curious what comes to your mind when you read that title. Did you consider a love story that is like none other? Singing the words, you realize that there is One whose love is so strong towards you, He will not relent until He has all of your heart. He longs to be with you, for no other reason but that He desires to be in relationship with His crowning creation. You are probably already aware of God’s love for you. It is preached and experienced each and every week at Greystone and for that we are grateful. Grateful that we are part of such a loving vibrant body of believers.

But not everyone we come in contact with knows this love.

So what do we do with that?

We invite them for a cup of coffee…and listen.

We pray for them…even if we don’t know their name.

We share a smile…and when given the chance we share our faith.

It is an uphill battle, honestly, to try and overcome the world’s version of love to those who may have been deeply hurt by bad relationships, been lied to, and mistreated. Stay dedicated to reaching the lost, the hurt and the misled. Remember that the One who does not relent until He has all of your heart loves those around you in the same way.

Dear UMCH Family,

This past Christmas season, many of you did something very impactful - you gave your love and support to the vulnerable children cared for by the United Methodist Children's Home (UMCH).

I'm writing simply to say thank you. Nearly half of UMCH’s annual giving comes from the White Christmas offering which many of you so generously took part in.

Without the involvement of supporters like you, many vulnerable children and families in crisis might not ever be shown the love of Jesus Christ in such a powerful way.

Thank you for your continued support of providing homes, healing and much needed hope. God bless and Happy New Year!

Sincerely, Blake K. Blake Horne, Ph. D. President & CEO
